Since we live about 3 hours from the city, we do three show weekends to save travel time. We for the past few trips have been aimless between Saturday’s matinee and evening performances. Even with a long dinner at 1.5 hours, we still have often almost 2 hours to kill. We stay about a 30 minute walk from most theaters (east of TS) so going to the hotel and back is a bit of a waste.
We’ve done the drama bookshop to death. And the conventional book store. We despise Times Square. We’ve walked every neighborhood in Manhattan multiple times.
What do you do? We are looking for new ideas!

Take in a museum before dinner. Enjoy a drink at a bar/lounge. Walk along the Highline, weather permitting. Walk a few blocks or take a take a train one stop to Hudson Yards (new shops, marvelous architecture, the brand new Shed). just a few ideas to get you started:)

Only 2 hours near theatre district? I'd try MOMA, 53rd Street.

Yea it’s fun - and we’ve prob been 8 times. I should say we do 6 or so Theater weekends a year and have for the past 4 or so years. So High Line, etc is all old hat.
We like to walk so do that, just curious how others hang out. :)

Check out the exhibitions at The Library for the Performing Arts when they have them. Free and very well done. Ihave seen several. The Martha Swope exhibit was wonderful.

Posted: 3/23/19 at 12:51amThere are a few off-broadway shows that are 4:30 or 5 timeslot on Saturday in case you want to try a 3 Show day—right now I can think of sistas the musical and Big Bang musical parody. I also saw an ocean National Geographic exhibit on 42nd st go on to todaytix that was about 70 minutes so good for in between shows.

My favorite thing to do between shows is find a treat, find a seat and people watch.

Hudson Yards just opened, so that's new.
I actually really like to take gym classes when I am in NYC, but I do see how that might be difficult between shows. But there are always such weird and interesting ones that I've never tried, so I love it. I'm also a big shopper, so lord have mercy on my wallet if there's an awesome sample sale while I'm in town.
I follow FOMOFEED on instagram for ideas on cool new art displays and the like. There are several other similar accounts - just hit the down arrow next to the follow button on their page, and instagram will suggest several other similar accounts about what's hot in NYC right now.

- have a great meal
- cocktails
- go to a museum (Whitney, MoMA, or Guggenheim)
- relax in hotel room for a few

I never tire of visiting Central Park. Then hit the The Shops at Columbus Circle.

Posted: 3/23/19 at 10:35amI now live in NYC but back when I used to do my regular weekend theatre marathons, after a matinee I would get food and go straight back to the hotel to rest and a possible nap. I noticed I never remembered certain evening shows due to my brain being overwhelmed at a mind-blowing matinee so resting and clearing my head before an evening show worked incredibly.

Posted: 3/23/19 at 11:05amI eat then if it's nice out I will go to Central Park or the TKTS steps and people watch. If it's crappy out I will go to the 8th floor lounge at the Marriott Marquis and just chill.

I know a lot of people here love Shmackarys and they do have yummy cookies but my favorite is the chocolate chip walnut cookie from Levain Bakery at 74th/Broadway. It is a 30 min walk each way from Times Square but it’s a nice walk passing by Columbus circle and Lincoln center area. Even at a relaxed pace it’s doable in less than 2 hours.

Posted: 3/24/19 at 7:59amI saw 2 shows yesterday. I saw a 2pm off broadway show (This one's for the girls) and an 8pm showing of the Prom. I made a mistake of getting to Manhattan too early (can't trust these trains). I got there at 12. I walked around a bit until 2pm. The first show ended at 3:30pm then I walked to Benihana for a late lunch/ early dinner. After linner, I went to FAO to look around then I went to Lady M for a slice of cake. By the time I was walking to broadway, it was just after 6pm. I watched some street performers then at 7pm I walked to longacre to see the prom. Overall, I felt I had too much time to kill. I wish the 8pm show started at 7pm. Plus, the weather was not on my side. I will do better planning for my next 2 shows in one day Saturday.

If you're looking for a more restful option, I recommend hanging out in the Signature Center on 42nd and 10th Ave. It's further away than, say, the Mariott, but it's a more welcoming environment. (recently, the Mariott has become increasingly unaccommodating to people hanging out in the lobby - not that they kick people out, but they got rid of some of the comfy chairs, and covered up the electrical outlets).
So yeah, for me - Signature Center is the way to go. Grab a book, grab a newspaper, play on your phone, or just sit and chat with your +1. Whatever you want - like I said, this is great if you're looking to rest and recharge.

I visit NY several times a year. Weather permitting, I've done the following:
Take a walking tour. There are dozens available from food & bars to museums & landmarks to art & architecture; there's always something knew to learn.
Ride the subway. The Bronx Zoo, the unisphere in Queens, Coney Island, etc, are accessible without being exhausting.
On those cold and rainy days I treat myself to a bit of pampering. A haircut, a massage, a mani-pedi.
But mostly I eat, drink and nap.
