It actually is...It's subtle but it does get seen and mentioned in a awesome way.
BTW; saw it at the DGA screening, came in with very low expectations and Im also a cinema prude for sure (more so then of theater) but this was indeed an amazing achievement. One of the best movies of the year and by far an instant musical movie classic. Hopping part 2 will be just as wonderful.

I'm also a prude and film aficionado. We'll see how much issue critics take with cinematography and pacing, but this is a complete crowd pleaser and one of the very best adaptations of a musical in the last 30 years. I've seen 3 reviews flash on RT and all have been fresh. The embargo lifts in 2.5 hours so they were taken down.

I'd be surprised if Jon M. Chu gets an Oscar nomination for this. The directors branch of the Academy can be pretty snobby. It's arguably one of the reasons why Baz Luhrmann has never received a Best Director nod despite helming 2 Best Picture nominees with Moulin Rouge! and Elvis. Same with Greta Gerwig missing for Barbie last year.
When it comes to blockbuster hits, we've seen in the past that unless they happen to be a serious threat to win Best Picture (as was the case with Avatar, Gladiator, Gravity, Lord of the Rings, Oppenheimer, Titanic), they're just never taken seriously by the directors branch (as was the case with Avatar: The Way of Water, Barbie, Black Panther, Dune, Jaws, The Martian).
- I agree with the Idina/Kristin cameo. It felt way too long. The audience in the screening I was at did have a fun reaction when they appeared.
- I loved how they built the momentum of Defying Gravity, and then as a previous poster mentioned, they bring it to a screeching halt before we finally get the finale. It makes me think we're going to start part 2 with a replay of Madam Morrible's speech.
- None of these actors read as "age appropriate" but genuinely, do not care.
- Something about Jeff Goldblum elicited laughter from the audience. The first time being when you see the bust of the wizard's face during "Wizard and I" and then when he started singing "Sentimental Man." I still dislike that song.
- I was VERY curious where this drumming sugar glider/rat was going to happen. It just felt so out of place in the trailer. It definitely felt appropriate and actually made me smile.
- When I think of a fully fleshed out Shiz University, this is not what I imagined, and that actually was part of the fun of it, for me. Everything is so. visually stunning.
- Michelle Yeoh is not a singer. She did fine, but maybe I'm used to a Morrible who really eats it up.
- The two leads are fantastic and I would very much like to see us musical theater folks get some sort of win by having at least one of them nominated this year. I hate to sound super corny, but anytime we can get some young kids involved in theater, the better. I'm hopeful this movie sparks some interest in people to make a trip to New York, New York to see the broadway show, and who knows while they're here they'll decide to go see another show that their friend's sister saw and really liked.
While a good review.. the Variety review is stupid. Comparing Cynthias performance to Ididnas by saying one was big.. HELLO... one is on the stage the other is on film. Ugh.
Definitely good reviews overall so far, but not exactly the slam dunk lovefest a lot of folks on here were proclaiming. A lot of flack for the runtime, which isn’t that surprising.
Honestly, I’m glad it’s not all-out raves. Helps to temper expectations, both for myself and others.
Huh? They say she is “stiffer” than Chenoweth (stating she played the role more animated) and that she perfectly “mimics” Chenoweth’s singing style. THAT’S what Variety said.

Yes. He basically called her stiff. You read what you want. And comparing what Idina did on stage to Cynthia in two different mediums in that way is stupid. I know what I wrote. But thanks.
