I saw this last night at a packed screening and I've gotta say it lives up to the hype. I've seen Wicked on tour probably 8 or 9 times in the last 20 years and have played the soundtrack to death so I am very familiar with the show. The great thing about the movie is that they literally have cut next to nothing in terms of music and dialouge beats. All your favorite lines are here. All of the music you love is here. The actors GET this material. I think anyone who is a die hard or casual fan of Wicked will love this, and I also think that people going in who have never seen it or heard of it will be converted.

not that it really needs a boost, but it sounds like the movie being so faithful may very well give Wicked on broadway or tour a serious word of mouth boost, with potential new fans wanting to see the live version. I can see the $$$ already.

Luckily, THE LION KING is extremely well-equipped to play eternal bridesmaid to WICKED for the long-term future.
Yes it is. It is a good review but it is stupid. Comparing them to their stage counterparts without acknowledging or comprehension that it is two different things is stupid. "" steps into the Glinda role originated by Kristin Chenoweth, proving a talented mimic of the Broadway star’s singing style but a slightly stiffer presence on-screen. With her long blond hair and fine porcelain features, Grande nails the Little Miss Perfect dimension of Glinda’s personality, but lacks her idol’s killer comic timing. "" IT IS SAYING SHE IS STIFF.
I also read that review as it saying she is stiff. The writer doesn't seem to have a concept of perfroming for the stage as opposed to film. Saw the movie last night. Really sensational. Just what we need.
I really enjoyed this and I hope it does smashing buisness. The perception from "civilians" is already that this movie is suppose to be really good. My plumber today seems to be really well informed. They have done everything right promoting this.
“Universal’s female Jurassic World movie, if you will, the feature take of the Broadway musical Wicked, is expected to pull in any every single woman to the tune of a $125 million-$150 million domestic opening this weekend. Add in an extra $40M-$50M from its overseas launch.
By every single woman we mean in the U.S., where pre-sales are through the roof; we’re hearing that they’re around $30M+. The movie is already holding previews, last night and Wednesday in premium theaters via an Amazon promotion, with regularly scheduled early screenings starting Thursday at 2 p.m. Last night’s preview was strong enough business-wise to land Wicked a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Glickedis about to take effect at the box office. If anything, with Moana 2 coming on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the holiday stretch from this Friday through the Sunday after Black Friday is expected to be the highest-grossing ever at the domestic box office for all films.
There’s a little bit of a Barbie moment going on with Wicked in terms of pre-sales,” one industry insider commented this morning. “They just keep going up and up with tracking numbers through the roof.” Quorum reports that Wicked ranks as the firm’s most highest-tracked title in its post-Covid run with 70% total awareness.“
This has been wonderful day for me, between this getting very positive reviews and seeing the "Defying Gravity" hour long special. Honestly this makes me even more excited for this weekend. Also seeing the entire "What is This Feeling?" number at the end of the special was awesome! Jon M. Chu might be the one director who knows how to give a musical number both a classic and modern touch without one overwhelming the other.
He should direct more movie musicals after this. I'm serious.
Spielberg schooled his ass on how to do a movie musical the same year he directed In the Heights. That gym scene in West Side Story was more impress than anything in Heights or Wicked (I got to see an Amazon screening, it ain't that great).
Yikes. What made you so bitter? Who hurt you? Is it...age?
I agree WSS is incredible but that doesn't take away from the fact that Chu is the best in the biz who is eager to make movie musicals. It's possible that both can be talented directors without your weird vitriol towards Chu.
I really hope Chu considers directing a stage musical, he's obviously got a really great eye that lends itself to musical theatre.
Chu’s a filmmaker and his great eye is in cinema not theater. Stage directing and film directing are 2 totally different monsters. That’s why you don’t see film directors directing stage plays. Martin Scorsese found it ain’t easy with THE ACT.
Sam Mendes is the only one who comes to mind that moves fluidly between the two. Scott Ellis has done some good TV directing work, but even that is far different from cinema.
Just remembering you've had an "and"
When you're back to "or"
Makes the "or" mean more than it did before
just make sure Medusa Erivo’s eyes are visible in any advertising or she will stone you on social media
Erivo has already addressed this and that she admits she overreacted and should have just mentioned her thoughts to her friends instead of taking it to social media.
According to Page Six, Lady Gaga was essentially cast as Elphaba with Shawn Menes as Fiyero back when Stephen Daldry was gonna direct. https://pagesix.com/2024/11/19/entertainment/lady-gaga-was-essentially-cast-as-elphaba-in-wicked/
