They have Clayton Davis doing the Tony predictions at Variety??? I get that he's their chief awards editor, but...this is really not his expertise? They flew him here for Tony press for a week where, per his socials, he saw Ragtime, Lost Boys, Salesman, and The Jellicle Ball. That's liekly all he's seen this season. He seems to just be basing some predictions off of the thoughts of a few Tony voters he knows which is how we get predictions like Danny Burstein winning featured actor for Marjorie Prime (for which he was astonishing, but based on how the nominations, precursor wins, and industry sentiment has shaken out...its prob Ehrenreich vs. Abbott vs. Santiago-Hudson for that one). Kind of crazy that one of the top entertainment industry publications isn't recruiting one of their New York based theater writers for this type of piece, but I guess thats the landscape we are in right now.

To be fair, he does hedge his bets quite a bit on a number of these predictions, including with Burstein.
Until we get the fairly reliable NYTimes survey of Tony voters, everything is just sort of based on vibes.

Nahh …what’s “horrifying” is the number of fake burner accounts you have set up. Too bad the “mods” have allowed you to effectively ruin the site.

How exactly was Danny Burstein astonishing? I didn’t think anyone in that play was astonishing, they were all fine, June and Cynthia and the other guy. Not at all on the level of great ensemble of actors in Becky Shaw, Salesman, Liberation, or Balusters. I’m pulling for Richard Thomas

In my latest piece for Gold Derby, I dig into how this year, Bess Wohl has potential to become the fourth female playwright in history to win a Best Play Tony.

God it’s depressing that only 3 female playwrights have ever won Best Play.

If Bess Wohl wins, she's the first female American playwright to win Best Play in 37 years.

What are we thinking in the design categories? Lighting & set for both plays and musicals, I haven't the slightest. I personally am reminded of Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Death of a Salesman, & The Lost Boys, but that might be because they're the splashiest. I have no real understanding of the ins & outs of the technical craft behind them and what the Tonys usually gravitate towards. (Though I could talk your ear off about any of the main categories)

That's awful, but I am hopeful that she wins for her stunning show.
