Boy, I feel sorry for all of them! I had such high hopes for this- it must have been rushed and not given enough time to percolate right. Too bad they just gave themselves one month rehearsal, then the previews. Can it be saved in less than a month? Especially while in plain sight of the critical viewing audiences? Makes me think of the movie THE BANDWAGON with the over produced version of Dr. Faust== where is Fred Astaire when you need him?
while they hung there and he sang that pointless song... i thought... wow, i might leave... it is sunny outside, i can read, i can go have a snack, i need to pick up a new duffel bag... so many things better than this moment...
i wasn't sure i would do it... but, my body was walking before i ever made the OFFICIAL decision... sure, i spent 125 + dollars but, at the end fo the day...
What's there to feel bad for? She agreed to do the show. She's getting paid to do the show. She's doing the show.
Until you have heard from the warhorse herself that she's unhappy, don't feel bad. I'm sorry that she wasn't singing Rose's Turn, kyle, since that's what you wanted, I guess.

kyle4- Even though your comments were a little over the top, I tend to agree with you. One thing I disagree about though is the bed fire. You seem to think it unnecessary when you mentioned it doesn't further the plot, but I don't think it's supposed to further the plot. It's just supposed to be funny and provide a great sight gag in the apartment for the rest of the show.
My problem with that scene was the mopey ballad they gave Sherie to sing surrounding the burning. I think the burning of the bed is an important moment though.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
Wow, this one's going to be hard to fix. It really needs a complete rethinking. As is, it's almost impossible to follow the plot, let alone understand why we should care about any of the characters. But the physical production, though creative, is extremely complex. This means that any major change they make to the show will need to involve the entire tech crew, to redo and retime the set changes. I often read here that "they have four weeks of previews, plenty of time to make changes". But the reality is that once you're locked into 8 shows a week, it's very difficult to make major changes.
Now, add to this mix some of the biggest stars on Broadway, who will have their own opinions about how to fix the show, and you have a nightmare of epic proportions. It will be very instructive to revisit this show, since there are so many major talents involved, to see how they go about improving it.
Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.
yankee -- no, i seriously feel bad... i understand why the idea of this was seductive... great/fun/classic spanish film... just add music!!! so, i believe when they signed, they signed with enthusiasm! i just felt her regret with EVERY lick of the lollipop.... i TRULY HOPE I AM WRONG (caps lock!)!!!!! i TRULY TRULY hope!!! but, guess what... i am not!!! this is going to be a chore for all of them!!!
whizzer -- i agree... i don't think the bed needed to further the plot... it looked really cool in the movie... but, my point is... we are on stage now... be creative and do something compelling...
i just felt fear around me (due to the warning) and, at the end of the day, a bonfire center stage looked (and smelled) weird! made more weird by a woman singing a boring song!!!
everyone was calmer when they saw that last ember snuff out... who knew that was when the toxic smelling fumes would commence their attack on our lungs?!
I kind of like the idea of them suspended in air for the act 1 finale and act 2 opening. It sounds like it would help keep the story tied together between the two acts..

GAH!!! I was looking forward to this show being out of this world incredible. My friend saw it the other night and said it had potential but needs A TON of work. I really hope that this pulls through.
This show isn't going to open. Not because it doesn't have a healthy advance sale - because it's a steaming pile of s#!t. The producers will pull it before they let their cast suffer the embarrasment of opening and being reviewed in this mess. No inside info. Just my hunch. And if it doesn't happen, it should!
It is in previews! The director is well aware of the problems and they WILL be fixed before the opening. There have been a handful of positive reviews on other boards. I don't know how people can say this is just NOT going to open. What can be fixed will be fixed and what cannot be fixed will not be fixed. It is a limited engagement that has sold very well in advance. It is the second day of previews of a world premiere musical. Give it more time. The show will open and play its engagement as scheduled.

I saw the Sat. matinee. Being a fan of the movie, I was somewhat familiar with the plot, so it didn't confuse me at all. I thought it was visually creative, and the performances charming, fun and touching. Loved Benanti's frenetic number as well as Scott's more serious songs and of course LuPone's "Invisible." I also got a kick out of Danny Burstein's big "Madrid" number. The pace was kinetic, and everyone around me seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. There was a wait of about a minute after one scene because of a technical glitch, but Benanti scooted across the stage, in character, to say, "It'll be all right," or similar.
I don't see the big problems so many seem to be carping about. Once the tech issues get sorted out, I think the show will work well. Hubby thought so, too.
