shall we start a debate about how la vie boheme will be staged, since we know anthony enjoys reading our speculations?
I say let's discuss! I'm totally up for it! ( *raises hand* aspiring director (film and theatre...)!... So thinking about staging and all the aspects of filmmaking, from blocking to shooting to editing makes me very content!)
*Grabs storyboard sheets and a my dixon ticonderoga number two pencil*
Thinking about the difference in mediums and how you *would* actually shoot it is quite interesting, fascinating and even odd compared to the original if you *really* stop and think for a moment about what it could/would have to really look like... Angles, angles and more angles, CUs, OTSs, MS, a WS of all the group, pans and tilts, dutch angles!-- Everything...! (a lot more intricate than even the press reels were done, after all, it is film--ooo! I'm loving actually trying to picture it all in my head...*visual thinker*)
Anyway, if we do go ahead and discuss I can add thoughts or etc...
I better go work on my short musical film (hehe...and I'm not kidding either)!
(Thanks again to Anthony for the updates!)

speculations, speculations... la vie boheme... It's the biggest dance number in the show and although it's well choreographed it has the sense of spontaneity. I love the head bobbing/hand gestures the first few lines of music - It always cracks me up! I've been the The Life Cafe and it's packed with colors and culture that's amazing (Even the bathroom!) I'd like to see some interaction with some of the other guests (Similar to movie version of Hedwig during "sugar daddy") The scene itself is such a high energy point, followed by the high tension of "I should tell you", then back to la vie boheme 2. The intermission was a great way to separate of the energy of the first act with Seasons of Love. I'd be nice to see 'Seasons' isolated enough so it doesn't feel like 'La vie' is overpowering it. It sounds promising with in the screen play with the snow slush and the parting from The Life Cafe. Looks lovely in my head.. *daydreams* much love, -j
i'm still thinking about it... but i really hope it's not TOO choreographed. what's great about la vie boheme is the sponatiousity (is that a word??). the characters suddenly get the urge to sing and dance, and it shouldn't be all planned out. i hate it when the characters all dance in a movie, like they randomly all know the same dance.
I am puttting complete trust in Columbus...with almost all of the OBC and others who knew Larson aboard they will not let him mess RENT! up.
David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

I think we all should have a little faith--and I know there are many here that do, but I'm just saying in general-- why jump to the negative conclusion? A director that seems to specialize in family or tug-at-your-heartsrings-and-possibly-sappy family dramady/drama movies doesn't constitute a bad director... whether you liked the movie or not, the work depends on more than just the director--and while many would say, 'well, the director didn't get the right people so it is their fault for the film's nt being good', it may not be completely their fault...
And for LVB, the key is keeping spontaneity whilst allowng for filmic continuity-- it could be hell for a poor editor if every take the actors did what so moved them, as would happen on stage, and is the obvious, (and I feel for the poor editor that must deal with this and praise he/she wo can actually edit it!), yet if it were too roughly and strictly choreographed no one'd believe it in context.
Balance between the real and what must be prearranged is key in the creation of a film such as this where dances aren't completely choreographed a lá old fashioned MGMish musicals.
How do people in the real world all of a sudden step out onto the street, break into song AND kknow every last step, in complete synchronization?
Rent is more reality than that, in my opinion, and I think they should be able to capture it on film.

Which is why I am sure with Rent, the reality and the musicality/dancing/etc will hopefully smoothly work together. Believable is key-- the musical is designed to be more believable and real world than, for example, the grand MGM ones of the good ol' days.
And it should add to an appeal in a world where unfortunately many have zero tolerance for those classically styled dance-routine-saturated films.
I do happen to like when it looks more spontaneous, morese than the mass chorus choreographed, but who doesn't (here at least) love every now and then the mass-choreographed, if even just for a glimpse to see? Just not in this film.
It should be quite splendid to see the cross of spontaneous appearance on the medium, and the challenge will just make the product seem even better (again, wil a positive outlook--I see no reason why not to have one).
Film as an up close medium is an attempt to capture reality and this film is a great opportunity to reveal that musicals don't have to be that mass of choreographed people in the city street all the time, in every scene. (I don't expect there to be many, if any really any, mass'ly choreographed scenes in the film, it's not that kind of a musical or subsequently film, to me at least. Maybe some smaller choreographed groups here or tere, now and then, but nothing grandiose or overwhelming...)

I actually love it, however corny, when people all randomly start dancing like they've been practicing forever.
But that wouldn't work in RENT, so yeah I guess just movements in the street. It ought to be interesting though!
But for La Vie Boheme, I suppose they're not going to stick to the choreography (sp?) of the show and just add some other moves here or there around them. Cuz I guess it doesn't work that way darn it!
But I'm sure it'll be cool!
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
Don't get me wrong 'cause I do love when there is mass-choreography-- the only thing is that it must be perfectly synchronized or I don't think it looks good (well, of course, but the problem is just that-- in actually syncing it up where everyone is at a nearly and so-almost-identical-moment-of-movement-its-scary...to me that is very important, and usually that is where problems could occur because it is whoknowshowmany people all dancing at once...to me it really needs to click...)
In film the reality is very important-- even if something is fantasy it must look real or be believable to the audience... especially with the example of Rent..
I tend to like some variety though... even if its three groups of three and those sets of three have different intermingling choreo...
It all depends on the musical though, indeed it does :)
Hehe... just had a mental flash of an image for the film-- Mark setting the camera down rapidly, leaving it recording, and thus resulting in an artsy and uncomfy-for-the-audience-but-ultra-cool dutch angle, a low shot, looking up at Mark and whoever he's talking to...or something... (now that i think of it, i'm thinking what is supposed to be a moment's aside in confidence of one his friends to him, that they intended for private and he proceeds to record, even if accidentally...like the audience just happens to catch a secret...hmm...)...

Two new posts from Anthony (haven't logged on in a while) AND a discussion about (in my opinion) THE BEST song in the show! Does life get ANY better than this!? Wow, that is a great idea Stacey! Sometimes it's kind of scary how un-creative I can be...I never would have thought of that. I'm getting soo excited for the movie, esp. with all this input from everyone here and my renthead friends back here! Yay!!! Sorry to go off-topic, but about Adam's show on the 29th- It's at The Knitting Factory, right? I'm gonna be in NY then, is that an over 21 club? (Sorry if that's a stupid question, I've never been to NY before, and my friends didn't know either.)
"Kali, why is Roger on a cliff?"
"Because the cliff is love, Rachel."
"Oh."
I hope I can go! And just to the steer the topic on Anthony again, didn't Anthony perform there too? lol

*points* New icon, whoo! (I hated the way I looked in my old one...so it's time for You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown!!!!)
Now, to get to the actual post....
So, I meant to post this DAYS ago, but my computer decided to explode for a bit. Not fun, to say the least. Anyway, congrats on finishing the LSOH tour, Anthony! And I'm glad to hear that everything's going so well with the Rent film! I wish you all the best with future rehearsals and the like!
Hehe :) Thanks... Someday I hope to make my own films and have my own shows on B'way (at least, if not written by me, even though when I put myself to it I can write a decent script, but I can be lazy at times too, I'd love to direct something...a musical even! *swoons at the thought*... If anything is possible, then I'll have my chance...)
I'm afraid if I start getting too much into speculative ideas for directing this movie I'll post even longer and longer posts and I could be soo far off that it may be even embarassing considering that someone involved is reading the boards ::shiftyeyes::
Then again I love thinking about all the specifics of filming and staging and etc...and no two directors, etc, see the same script the same way... It's all interpretational
But if nobody minds... I'd still love discussion (but this prolly wouldn't be the place, huh...so maybe not.. I don't want to be quartered for threadjacking X-!)
OMG QuiteSo I LOVE YOUR ICON! I LOVE ROGER! Can you see him in my avatar..lol
and WOOOT I knew it..I wish I could have gone but noooo
