I appreciate the concerns you all have about the degree to which choreography can work, and that's something very much on all of our minds, but I think what we're doing now is walking the fine line rather well, cause it's funky and fun and in the right spirit. Some of it is specifically set, and some of it is freer, and that kind of blend is exactly what we did onstage, as well.
There's still plenty of dancing on tables, which makes me very happy.
Anthony-All we ask is that you make sure that Mr. Columbus remembers Larson's vision.
Thanks for everything Jacob.

Haha, love the title.. And Booo Yeah to dancing on tables!

Great to hear about LVB! You should stop by the 'Rent Welcome Wagon' thread on the OT board sometime... Fredi is usually posting when you check in... I know your busy/tired and you don't HAVE to stick around just because I suggest it, but that thread isn't so much like an interogation and I think it may be the sort of relaxed conversation you were looking for when you first joined...
Just a thought
Anyways hope rehersals continue to go as well as you say! -Kyle
Here in this cold white room tied up to these machines, it's hard to imagine life as it used to be. Laughing, screaming, tumbling queen... Like the most amazing light show you've ever seen. Whirling, swirling, never blue... How could you go and die? What a selfish thing to do...
RIP Jason
yes, anthony, you should definitely join us on the Rent Welcome Wagon Thread. we have an interesting time there. the same 10 people talk pretty much every night about EVERY topic imaginable.
but of course, adjust to SF and your new schedule first. enjoy rehersals!
I thought I had read in another thread that the movie songlist had been posted? Is that incorrect info? I am very curious what has made the cut. I do understand that this is sensitive info and may not have actually been released. :)
I have been reading this thread for hours. Just stumbled on it. I am still in too much awe to have any other thoughts yet.
I was thinking of different musicals and their 'big number' and had a hard time coming up with something similar in terms of being controlled chaos. It's hard to try and imagine different choreography in its place. I thought "Go-Go Joseph" from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" came close, but not nearly individualized as the characters as La Vie are. I feel that the video version was horrendous as it simply broke into a chorus and never let up in its relentless, repetitive visuals. I have immense faith on this project and I haven't felt let down yet. It's in good hands with the absolute best people on board. much love, -j
So glad to hear that even after, what, over a week (not linear-ly), all is still going great!
There's still plenty of dancing on tables, which makes me very happy. :)
I think we're *all* made very happy by that! Big fat smiles abound for table dancing...sometimes you have the urge to just dance on tables, and it's such a strong part of the scene... Boy those characters have some chutzpah to dance on tables in a public cafe! Go them! (Strong character representations-- and then you think that even Mark, the observer usually, takes part...)
Some of it is specifically set, and some of it is freer, and that kind of blend is exactly what we did onstage, as well.
Blend. Perfect terminology. All must blend and apparently the worlds are blending... Worlds... mediums...

Kinda random question, actually, that just flew back into my head, for Anthony, if you even have time to look at a question or read it or anything-- You said you were in the NYU film school for about a semester or so-- here's my incredibly stupid question: Was it for acting? Just curious... prolly was, but you never knooow, ya know?
*wierd questions come into the mind of someone who sometimes gets reality flashes of thinking ahead to college-- less than two years away! (Columbia and NYU are at the top of my list right now, since I realized P'ton isn't nessa for me as science/math school more than film/theatre) ~*spasms and nearly passes out* Where did the time go, anyway?~
G'night!
One more random thought as I start to drift off... I kinda am hoping maybe at least one of the 'moves' that you, Anthony, did in LVB somehow in some form remains-dunno why, but this one's distinct...-- the arms thrown up on "god and me" and then the twist back on "s&m"... heh... the title of the original post reminded me... *thinks about it* could it work on film though? *Thinks logistically...but...too..tired...*
Hey Stacey. You're lucky college is farther away for you though. I'm still thinking about all the places I want to apply. Anyway back on topic. Thinking...pondering...forming a blank of what to say next.
Very interesting ideas about LVB.
Okay so I'm sadly going to have to call it a night. Got tons of stuff to do and so little time. So everyone have a good night.
Race.

Just got home from an evening of sushi with the gang, and wanted to share something very inspiring to me:
listening to Rosario expressing how she was discovering the *power* of La Vie Boheme. I highlight that word because I feel sometimes when I'm watching other companies performing that song that all they're expressing is the silliness, the exuberance, and the funky dance moves, and none of the power of the message of that song. It's a song for *all* people -- healthy people, people living with disease, straight people, queer people, young people, old people, people alive and people who are no longer among the living. There is a *powerful stand* that all the members of the community in Rent are taking in that song. And it is certainly a joyful stand, but it is rooted in the deepest sense of pride and inclusiveness imaginable. And to get to hear Rosario say all of that in her own words was very very exciting for me to hear. She's the real deal, and is pouring her whole heart and soul into this project. She's beginning to really taste the lovely sweetness and joy and, yes, *power* that's available to all of us who have gotten the privilege of performing these words and music that the amazing Jonathan Larson put together.
First of all, yay for table dancing! And secondly, that's great about Rosario Dawson. I wasn't too sure how it was going to work out with her, but I get the vibe that everything's going great! So good to hear from you again!
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
Glad to hear things are going well. I will be at the theater on opening day waiting with breathless anticipation to see what will surely be a wonderful movie. Break a figuritive leg, Anthony.
So now you've met the court of 364, and if you ever wish to come...don't.
Hello, I've been lurking around this message board for quite awhile, and I'm SO happy to hear that La Vie Boheme is going well. It is my absolute FAVORITE song ever! And I mean with all music. It's just so...well...as Anthony talked about, powerful! I went with my drama club to see RENT when it came to our town last January and we've all been hooked on it since, and we make sure to listen to it before a show, La Vie Boheme is especially last because it pumps us up soooooo much. It's such a great, and meaningful song.I absolutely love it and cannot wait to see it on the big screen....just thought I'd reflect with you guys since you seem to be the right people. Thank you.

I rarely post, but I felt compelled to respond to this... You are so right, Anthony. I was watching a clip the other day from the Rent website of you performing LVB, and it just seemed like you understood the song and its message in a different way than the productions I've seen lately. Some of them seem to be more spectacle than heart in LVB, but I appreciate how you know, and can communicate as an actor, the message Jonathan wanted us to take away. Of course LVB wasn't merely written for table dancing; there is something more...
Quick question(s), how much of the day are you really rehearsing? I'm assuming that Mark is probably in a lot of scenes, but when you're not do you hang out in your trailer (do you even have a trailer?...you're not even filming yet...), or do you remain a part of the rehearsal process for adam and rosario scenes? I don't know if that makes sense...I can just imagine how hard it is to be learning so much while you're still missing half of your cast. Since you're doing so much rehearsing now, will you get to rehearse less when the rest of the gang joins up? Also, has LVB been just you 5, or do you have some other people at the table rehearsing as well? and, have you had any crazy san francisco fan stalkings yet?
...sometimes when I'm watching other companies performing that song that all they're expressing is the silliness, the exuberance, and the funky dance moves, and none of the power of the message of that song.
Very well said (but of course)-- completely agree. It's easy to lose the original meaning when a cast is fargone form the original and for whatever reason things get lost in the translative processes. Yes, it's a fun song that can have its sillier parts, but that isn't necessarily what its all about. Superficiality and the like are need to be scraped away...It's not the top layer of film that forms (kinda disgustingly...) on warm cream (I think that makes sense)...You have to scrape it away before drinking (I wouldn't drink it anyway, but as an example, ya know?)
It's a song for *all* people -- healthy people, people living with disease, straight people, queer people, young people, old people, people alive and people who are no longer among the living.
To *what you just said*! It's celebrates life for all aspects of everything. (To life, to life, l'chaim...etcetcetc). It's *not* just silliness and randomness and arbitrary hand motions, suggestive thrusts, whatever else...it does mean something and something deeply and stressingly important at that... vitality... vivacity... varocity (with good connotation)...
And Rosario's beginnings of epiphany? *yay for her!* That's great!
And it seems everyone is getting along, too, it's an essentiality in film (chemistry as they say...though i hate chemistry-chemistry, unlike the onscreen kind which is very much needed) and especially in a film like this with thick firendships, interrelationsships, intrarelationships, etc.... (the clash that could occur if those portraying fellow bohemians didn't get along? recasting would be needed..)
*I have mental images from some sort of making-of type thing in my head, if there was one to be made, of all of 'the gang' sitting around the table at the sushi bar/restaurant discussing the signifigance of LVB as the camera, seemingly handheld-ish and as if sitting next to you looking across at rosario, etc, records the epiphany and other insightful moments...*
I like being a visual thinker (the only frustration is that I can't get the images out of my head the way they are inside! *can't draw too well..grr..*)
Hope you enjoyed the sushi too :- P!
