Seems like he has disappeared like a ghost from social media.
I was hoping we would hear from him as to the "state of the theatre" - or at least some optimism and encouragement.

Maybe he thought posting pictures of himself lounging around his East Hampton manse in couture wasn't the right look in a moment of national social/political upheaval.

His pictures needed a “time out” as they were tone deaf to the times. And then there was all that stuff about his family being Trump contributors. But I would not mind hearing from him.

Someone asked this on All That Chat, too. Sounds like people had similar conclusions...

It's the summer, he's in the Hamptons enjoying his luxurious lifestyle. Rich people spend August in Italy on yachts so I'm sure that's where he'll be next. He can put whatever he wants on his personal account, but I understand why so many people were upset.
The people who are the leaders in American theater have been awfully quiet....

What would you have them say? They have no more details or insight to what the future holds than anyone else does.

Thanks for this. When I saw the post on here this morning I was having a strange case of deja vu. :)

I've heard some people point out that the most powerful people in the industry - big producers and theatre owners - should be using their influence to put pressure on the government to extend the unemployment benefits through the rest of the year (which would be a great asset to people in the theatre industry) and/or trying to get an industry bailout from the government for live theatre.
I can't speak to how effective that would be, as I don't totally understand how these bail-out / unemployment bills work. But I have seen posts floating around from people who are irritated that the most powerful voices in the theater industry aren't attempting to speak up for the workers that make the industry run.

Broadway big shots have about as much clout in DC as writers do in Hollywood. They are kings of a very little hill, ignored by most most of the nation, and even many who might take in an occasional show, and theater producers don't even have name recognition on their side. Cameron Macintosh would come closest--but I doubt he's a household name outside of theater fanatics.
In fact, it might even hurt the cause of unemployment bailout because Broadway needs will strike most outsiders as a frivolous topic compared to, say, those of factory workers or service industry (not saying the lives of the people who work in theater are frivolous or unimportant--merely pointing out what public/government perception likely is).

You're sure? It would be kind of difficult as Americans are barred from entering the EU, but ok.

Lol. If you don't think billionaires with private jets are not paying people off to have their vacations this year, there's not much I can tell ya.

Not to Italy.

US citizens who are permanent residents of Italy can travel there just fine. Also, travel rules are based around where you are coming from, not what passport you hold. So a US citizen travelling from Germany, for example, would be permitted to enter Italy because there are no restrictions on the Italy-German border.

So Jordan Roth is a permanent resident of Italy? And he's been hiding out in Germany this whole time and not the Hamptons?
It's ok to be wrong about something. You can just move on instead of trying to defend something that you clearly hadn't thought out.

Take your own advice sweetie, and don't challenge me on this, it's a giant waste of your time. Rich people get special treatment, it's cute you don't think so, but they do. American celebrities have been to Italy many times this year. Bye now!

For the record: you're SURE that Jordan Roth will be vacationing in Italy next month, and you cannot be challenged on this? That's really what you want to be saying?

I don't know if Broadway is much different than other industries. You don't see auto manufacturers talking publicly to their customers and employees about what they're doing to get government support, for example. Broadway has a very active lobbying effort that predates Covid and I'm sure they are doing things behind the scenes that most don't know about.

Maybe they should. It would help the public to figure out which corporate leaders are heartless bastards, and which ones are the rare exceptions.

Wow. This is painful to see. (Unless of course it was taken many months ago). If this is new, it's so shameful. How can you possibly deny Larry Kramer's disgust at this? May he RIP.
