I've been fortunate to see so many great performances in the past few years that I was going through a list in my dead, but honestly, the performance that keeps popping up with this question is clearly Billie Piper in Yerma. I have not seen anything like it before or since. That really was a production and performance for the ages and I don't believe I'll ever see anything close to that.
I think I have to agree with everyone who has said Billie Piper in Yerma. That might be also one of the best roles ever written for a woman, at least of that age.
Cherry Jones in Doubt - blew me away. I felt like she was channeling the nun who was my 8th grade math teacher. Amazing performance.
Nathan Lane in Angels In America. I loved Andrew Garfield as well, but I was delighted with Nathan Lane's take on his role. He was a tornado.
Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen. I have seen some amazing singers in musicals, but he brought the acting chops on top of that incredible voice. First Bway show that I went back to see several times because he was fantastic.
Patina Miller in Pippin. I was unsure how I'd feel about a female Leading Player, but I enjoyed her even more than Ben Vereen.
I’ll narrow it down to Audra McDonald in 110 in the Shade at Hale Center Theater in Orem, Utah. She and Will Swenson did a two week run of it as a benefit to the theater.
Lead Male Actor Musical -- Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd
Lead Female Actor Musical -- Audra McDonald as Bess/Bernadette Peters as Dot
Lead Male Actor Play -- Nathan Lane as Roy Cohn
Lead Female Actor Play -- Kathy Bates as Jessie in 'NIGHT MOTHER.

1) I saw Ephie Aardema (she was the understudy Jerusha) in Daddy Long Legs off-Broadway and she was absolutely magical in the role. I saw it again with Megan McGinnis, the principal, and it didn't feel the same. I still adore Megan, though.
2) Lianah Sta. Ana as Kim in the new Miss Saigon revival. She played the character so well emotionally. Her voice also reminded me a lot of Lea Salonga's, but, she still held her own. She was fierce and very much in character. I didn't feel like I was watching an actress play Kim at all, I just felt like she was the embodiment of Kim.
3) Marin Mazzie as Anna in "The King and I". She was so spectacular. She played a very emotionally driven Anna, and, I am so blessed that I got to see her in that role.
Fascinating and impossible question. The minute I think of an answer, I think of ten others. But probably Len Cariou in SWEENEY TODD. Especially his singing of "Pretty Women." And because it is Sondheim.
Next ten thousand tie for second place but I loved Peter O'Toole in PYGMALION (the only time I saw him onstage) And Raul Esparza in THE HOMECOMING. And Ian Richardson in MY FAIR LADY.
On the distaff side I have never seen anything to match Laurie Metcalf as Mary Tyrone.
Frank Langella. I've seen him in everything he's done since FROST/NIXON in 2007. That performance was sensational, but along with that? I was moved to tears about a decade later when he did THE FATHER. A brilliant performer.
