What’s next for The Broadway Theatre?

The Broadway theatre will likely be ready for a new tenant by the spring. Are there any large musicals that are looking to come in as soon as this spring? Just a couple ideas off the top of my head: The Great Gatsby(Papermill Playhouse version), Come Fall in Love - The DDLJ musical, Sunset Boulevard, and Boop.

It should probably stay vacant for a while - it’s a huge house and tough to fill up.

Maybe a concert residency should be next?

Convert it to a thrust stage, pull the mezz forward a bit, kill 200 seats in the rear mezz, and add an elevator.

(((I know that's not happening)))

Either Guys & Dolls or Paper Mill Playhouse's The Great Gatsby will probably transfer.

Too big for that show. I can see Old Friends going to a smaller house. It would be great if that went to the Sondheim, but it doesn't look like & Juliet is going anywhere. Maybe the Golden?

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

I still hope they'll keep the current configuration for a bit: "They Shoot Horses Don't They" co-directed by Marianne Elliott and Steven Hoggett and adapted by Paula Vogel was supposed to open at the Bridge Theater in London in an immersive production during covid. This is an amazing team and I'd love to see this show. It's not a musical so they could hire some big name actors. There are so many musicals opening this spring; a cool, exciting play with some major star power would be a great compliment to the rest of the season.

Let Adele reopen the Palace and have Gaga play the Broadway. They can alternate nights they perform.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I doubt they'd go for it, but it would be cool to keep the Broadway Theatre as a semi-modular space for shows that would still be considered Broadway shows but may not have a traditional setup, maybe like a scaled up version of Circle in the Square.

The Old Friends Sondheim concert is not coming to Broadway. Some people got confused a while back because the current Merrily revival is financially filed as "Old Friends Broadway Limited Partnership". It is Merrily on that filing. Not a transfer of anything CamMac.

I have friends in the UK who have said that Old Friends is looking to transfer in the Spring with Bernadette and Lea. Unless you have heard something else, it's probably gonna transfer.

The transformation cost millions. Now producers will have to spend a fortune restoring it.

How much money did this show lose?

It had a $22 million capitalization. But I assume someone threw in some extra funds to keep it going.

Closing Costs are built into the capitalization for every show. For HLL, those costs just happen to be more than the average musical.

I can’t imagine any show wanting to transfer in during an already crowded season. G&D would be smart to wait until the dominoes of this years’ revivals fall so it doesn’t draw unfavorable comparisons to Cabaret.

GATSBY is in dire need of some re-evaluation and the Broadway Theatre is roughly 500 seats larger than Papermill - No way would they scale up this production without it looking more absurdly garish

If guys and dolls wanted to come in, wouldn’t this be the time to do it? While the orchestra seats aren’t there?  I don’t think this production would ever win best revival, this season or next. next season has things like spiderwoman, chess, sunset boulevard, next to normal, and tik tik boom coming in.

Guys and Dolls would have to be completely re-imagined to work in any Broadway house. None havef the massive floor elevators the curent production is built around.

If I were the lead producer of CABARET, I'd be trying to move the production to the Broadway to split the theatre demo costs with HLL.

I don’t think y’all get how this all works. Cabaret isn’t going to “share” with Here Lies Love. It’s a totally different configuration. A totally different vibe. The money is already in place. Same for Guys and Dolls. It relies on floor elevators so it needs a big stage with a big basement. I think the only thing on Broadway that would work would be Lincoln Center.

Gatsby going to the Broadway has major flop written all over it. It'll be lucky to last 6 months there.

people really need to accept that Sunset is not coming this season for a variety of reasons including it would be a THIRD revival by the same lead producers in the same season which would make zero sense for them financially, with regards to awards season ect...
