Hey Hey,
Since Fiddler announced its closing date of Janurary 3, 2006... does anyone know what is to follow??
Any rumours/spectulation/theories?
I've heard a rumor that a long-running show will be moving there.

so Phantom, Rent, B&B, Lion King, Mamma Mia, Wicked, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Spamalot (sespite being crap will run til the end of time), Movin' Out, The Producers, Chicago.
so, which is it? Not phantom, not rent, not mamma mia, not wicked, not hairspray, not avenue q, not spamalot, not the producers, not chicago, so that leaves B&B Lion King and movin' out. Itd probably be Lion King to make way for another Disney show at the new amsterdam.

If it is a long-running show moving to another house, then it most likely is The Lion King. Minskoff is such a big house with over 1700 seats, it'd be very unlikely for a show like Beauty & The Beast - which has already moved once - to move to a bigger house, especially since its sales haven't gone up so significantly.
edit: but why would Disney spend money and transfer The Lion King to another house which would have to be modified (the stage) for the show? Why not book the Minskoff for the new show?

Mamma Mia or Spamalot would both benefit from larger spaces. I wouldn't think, however, that Spamalot would move, so maybe it's Mamma Mia.
Why not 'Hairspray'? It's still doing 95%+ and the Minskoff has 250+ more seats than the Alvin
I'm sure I read on this board that it was going to be The Lion King so that Disney can open Mary Poppins in their own theatre. Can't find the thread now though
Disney needs to completely reconfigure a theatre for Mary Poppins and as of now the only one they can do that too is the New Amsterdam. So Im pretty sure LION KING will be the long running show that moves to the Minskoff (whew, got over that slump of gawd awful shows) and MARY POPPINS likely will move into the New Amsterdam.
I don't think the Minskoff is right for Hairspray. I think the Neil Simon is perfect for the show. It still dips into the 80's and 70's once in a while, so why put it in a bigger house?

what exactly would disney have to do to the Minksoff stage?
I just find it hard to believe that Disney would sacrifice its biggest hit to the Minskoff. The New Amsterdam was made for the premiere of The Lion King. I just have trouble thinking of The New Amsterdam minus The Lion King. Plus the Disney store attached to it wouldn't sell as many "Bert" and "Mary" dolls as it does "Simba" and "Mufasa"
The Disney Store next to the New Amsterdam has been gone for several years.
I feel like Disney would most likely leave B&B and Lion King in their respectable houses and put Tarzan into the Minskoff. Although this goes against any info tips that were already given, I just feel like Tarzan could work better in the Minskoff than any other theatre.

I do think Spamalot would benefit from a bigger house. Say what you will about the show itself, but the only thing keeping it from making the same money as Wicked each week is that the Shuburt is a significantly smaller theatre.
However, I did hear that The Lion King will be moving to the Minksoff. Sad, now we have to say goodbye to The Lion King. I mean, they CAN'T have a hit at the Minksoff, right? :)
The lion king wont be moivng, they changed the entire theatre, like carved into the wood lion faces around the gift show and bars. probably tarzan or poppins. i say poppins.
Wow. What was I even thinking? *Head to desk*
While the Minskoff has a bad record of new shows opening and running there, tranferring shows have always fared OK. Pippin moved there from the Imperial, The Pirates of Penzance moved there from the Uris, and The Tap Dance Kid moved there from the Broadhurst. All survived.
Yes, Sum. You should be ashamed. Know your Broadway gift stores.
*Sniff* I thought I did magruder! I THOUGHT I DID! Oooooh! *And there is much pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth*
Disney booked the Minskoff to transfer The Lion King. Mary Poppins will open at the New Amsterdam. Movin' Out is vacating the Rodgers for Tarzan in the next couple of months.

Why would Mamma Mia move? The Winter Gareden was renovated JUST for that show, and it cost alot of money to haul out the CATS equipment.
I think that the theatre would be vacaunt for a little until a new show coming in for Spring decides it wants the space.
Look at how fast the other the other theatres from this seaon were rented to incoming shows. The Marquis, Lyceum, and Broadway were taken a little before the current shows posted notices.
You say this with so much certainty in your literary voice.

I might be wrong but I don't think there is anything unusual about MAMMA MIA that would require the theatre being renovated specially to accomodate it. When CATS loaded out it was an opportunity for the Shuberts to do a much needed renovation/restoration. As for the cost for loading CATS out of the building I think there was money set aside by the CATS production when it opened that was to be used to cover the expense of the load out.

I heard from someone who works there that The Lion King is supposed to move over to the Minskoff so that Mary Poppins can move into the New Amsterdam.
