Will SUFFS transfer to Broadway?

I have had some time to read more about the show and was wondering if this show will transfer. I have heard clips of songs and it sounds beautiful! Just want to know your thoughts.

With some more work and fine-tuning, Suffs could easily have a life on Broadway. The score sounds like it’s already in excellent shape though.

Perhaps another tryout run before heading to Broadway?

Seems like it should get on Broadway eventually, but they’ll likely still be working on it for a bit before it transfers.

I think it will, but my guess is that it will be part of the 2023/2024 season, or maybe even further out. Shaina Taub has a PACKED summer this year with both Devil Wears Prada in Chicago and then As You Like It at the Delacorte.

After that, I really don't think there is anything that can stop an Elton John musical from transferring to Broadway (not even that god-awful excuse for a logo), so Prada becomes her focus again.

After that, hopefully, she'll have the time to do the necessary rewrites and make adjustments for Suffs. Then they can start putting together the regional or commercial out-of-town production that this show really needs before Broadway. After that production, hopefully, it'll come to Broadway (although there could be more delays for more adjustments and waiting on a theatre).

TL;DR Yes, it's probably on it's way. However, it's probably also going to be a while.

Yeah the reviews weren’t exactly “send this to broadway” reviews so I think we are likely to see an out of town somewhere. Seems in line with somewhere like ART.

They are doing a 5-week workshop commencing this week. Which indicates to me there are either BIG changes or poor business choices! Though the set design (stairs) appears to be the same.

Is that normal? A 5-week workshop? Seems like a pretty big commitment of time/money

I enjoyed the show at the Public but felt it needs a pretty decent amount of revision and tightening before it comes to Broadway. I'm elated to see that they're putting the time into it. I hope they will do one more production elsewhere before their inevitable Broadway run to really work out all the kinks. It has so much potential and I hope it comes to Broadway when it's in its finest form.

Being that it's already been reviewed by NY critics, I don't know that momentum would be helped by going out of town. I know Next to Normal did that. But shows can often achieve the same results for less $$$ by doing 3-5 weeks in a rehearsal studio in NYC and then putting on presentations for investor types. Plus some curated press pieces about how the show has evolved after it announces a Broadway run.

1. Revisions will have been made...so perhaps it is ready for bway. Or getting there.

2. We have no idea if thats the next step they are planning.

3. Really hard to have licensing lucrative without name recognition- which this does not have yet

4. I loved it at the public.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The author and producers feel it's salvageable enough to give it another shot & see if they can raise the money after revisions. Better to try it now instead of quitting. Maybe it never makes it to Broadway, but it's worth a try.

I second what was said above...I think Shaina Taub wants it to have a life besides the Public run, but I think she said it's not ready yet. We'll see!

Can't see this surviving on Broadway. It should just play an Off-broadway house if they want it to return. Also, a 5-week workshop sounds like they'll be making a lot of changes.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I may be misremembering but I feel like all Spring/Summer the general sentiment was that this was the second coming of Jesus Christ, haha — and make no mistake I absolutely loved it too. Sort of crazy seeing this much pessimism or lack of faith for it all of a sudden.

Definitely not insinuating everyone/anyone who’s expressing their concerns here has a vendetta or anything trivial like that… The vibe is just significantly less encouraging re; the future of the show than it was when people first started seeing it is all. At least in my eyes. Idunno. I’m excited to see what happens.

I do think the Friedman is probably too small, though— at least with the current set haha. But it’d be cool to see a new musical at MTC.
