If you are on 57th St. between 8 & 9, then you should definitely walk to Times Square. It's only 12 short blocks plus one long block. It will take you longer to get there by subway.
We can stand.
So, we should just walk to Times Square?

I would walk. It's pretty close and you get to do some sightseeing along the way.
You really can't stand in Times Square - it's very crowded and you will get run over, lol. I can see eating a pretzel while walking, but a hot dog might get messy.
We'll work it out. I'll put walking as a possibility.

Also, since there is not much to see at WTC, you'll be done with it quickly. You might have time to catch Staten Island Ferry for the best view of Manhattan and Statue of Liberty. You can even have your breakfast on the boat (but I would buy it before boarding).

You take #1 train from WTC to South Ferry - I think it's 2 stops or so. Ferry itself is free. You take it to Staten Island - 30 min. trip passing thisclose to the Statue of Liberty. And then you take it back to Manhattan. In the morning, they run pretty frequently. Get your breakfast before you board and eat on the outside deck while enjoying the view. Check out the views you get from the boat:

But only if the weather is nice enough to sit on the outside deck.
You think we can fit WTC, the Staten Island Ferry, and SoHo/ NYU all before lunch?
Take the 8th Ave. subway line to last stop. Walk about 2 blocks, you'll be at the ferry. Buy your breakfast anywhere on the way down. the ferry's free and fantastic. When you get to staten Island, just hop back on, and the view back to southern Manhattan is breathtaking !! Also great to do at sunset, about 8-9 pm.

That depends on how early you leave your hotel.
Sorry, I meant the # 1 line.

Here is the SI Ferry schedule. In the morning, they run every 15 min.

The trip takes about 30 min each way.

Last stop on #1 train is right inside the Ferry Terminal - you don't even have to walk.
Say, we leave our hotel at 7:30.
You should have time, but it depends on how fast your parents walk.
Also, you can buy food on the ferry. It's actually pretty decent.
When you go from the Lower East Side up to Rockefeller Center, just be aware that the B train does not run on weekends. You'll need either the F or the D (same station as the B).

Manhattan mall... off the top of my head I cannot think how close it is.. seems close to Macy's... they have seating down stairs. but just to sit on the street.. times square.. I cannot think of anyplace either.. hey... at NBC there is a nice sitting area up that way , flowers abound stone seats and you can see that famous gold statue. directly in times square cannot think of a thing.

What you can do, is go straight to the Ferry - #1 or R train will get you there and take the ferry round-trip. By 10 AM you will be definitely done (probably earlier). Then you take R train from across the street from the Ferry to Cortland St. Station and you are at WTC and then you can proceed with your schedule from there.

From 57th Street, #1 train will get you to South Ferry faster than R train.
It's on the upper end of Times Square, but there's a nice courtyard between 50th and 51st. And there are usually vendors all around. That's a place for seating.
Okay. I spoke with my dad. He would rather take a walk down Wall Street (He's a stalk broker...) than take the ferry. We're also going to go to some park he knows to see the Statue of Liberty.

That's Battery Park. Right next to the ferry terminal. The ferry passes next to the Statue of Liberty. If you are going to Wall Street, South Street Seaport is right there too.
Has anyone eaten at Pomodoro's Pizza. I am pretty sure it's in SoHo, but it may be in Little Italy.
I love Pomodoro's! We order from them for lunch at work often. You must try a slice of their vodka pizza, and their baked zitti is so delish!
Yeah, Battery Park!
How far is Wall Street from WTC Memorial?
