Your Theatre Year In Review 2018

Love this idea!

I saw 30 shows this year.

Angels in America was one of the most incredible theatre experiences of my life, I would go as far to say that it was life changing to me. On a totally different level, Spongebob was pure joy and I loved the whole show.

Least favorite goes to Saint Joan (low-budget high school level at its best), Ruben & Clay's Christmas bore, and honestly, besides Bryan Cranston, I was disappointed by Network.

I was pleasantly surprised with Once on This Island. We did it in my middle school and I thought it was silly and childish. But I thought this revival was some of the best storytelling I've seen in awhile.

Favorite male performances go to Bryan Cranston, Ethan Slater, and I was pleasantly surprised by Chris Evans in Lobby Hero

Favorite female performances go to Susan Brown in Angels without a doubt! And Katrina Lenk in Bands Visit.

As for next year, despite the mixed responses, I'm looking forward to Moulin Rouge. Hadestown has my interest, as does King Lear and Tootsie

How many shows have you seen this year?

- 20 (not including repeat visits)

Show you liked/loved the most?

- ANGELS IN AMERICA – Epic on every scale and some of the best performances I will probably ever witness in my lifetime.

- THE BOYS IN THE BAND/TORCH SONG – Poor direction and casting could have easily sunk both of these shows into the “haven’t aged well” category, but somehow these plays feel just as prescient and current as ever.

- THE WAVERLY GALLERY – I’ve seen dementia and Alzheimer’s enough in my field of work to know what it looks like and when popular culture gets it wrong. Stellar performances aside, this show gets my stamp of approval for accuracy in not only portrayal of the disease, but how it affects everyone close to the patient.

Show you liked least/hated most?

- SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL – The ladies were stellar, but the book was an honest-to-God affront to Donna’s legacy and she deserved so much better.

- CAROUSEL – An example of how to turn a beloved classic musical into a clunkily-directed and blank museum piece.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)?

- THE WAVERLY GALLERY (Good) – See above

- HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD (Bad) – I’m pretty sure the authors knew they could’ve condensed the story into one part, but instead decided to keep all the unnecessary twists and make it a stylish, bloated production.

Favorite male performance?

- Andrew Garfield (Angels In America), Lucas Hedges (The Waverly Gallery), and Michael Urie (Torch Song) – These were all star-making performances that emotionally rocked me to my core by honoring the work instead of pulling unnecessary focus to themselves.

Favorite female performance?

- Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women) and Elaine May (The Waverly Gallery) – Who says you can’t have a critically beloved star turn in your 80s? Both of these performances I will have seared in my memory forever.

- Beth Leavel (The Prom) – She is ridiculously hammy and LOVING IT, but knows how to control her mugging to suit the story and not just for the sake of doing it. How DO you silence a woman who is known for her belt?

Favorite New Song

- “Omar Sharif” (The Band’s Visit) – Try to not sway like Katrina Lenk lost in a reverie while listening to this song. I dare you…

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year?

- Tootsie, Moulin Rouge, and Glenda Jackson’s King Lear

How many shows have you seen this year? 48, 20 on Broadway, the rest off- and off-off-Broadway. 29 plays, 17 musicals, and 2 stand-up performances.

Show you liked/loved the most? "1969: The Second Man" by NYTW and "Hitler's Tasters" by New Light Theatre Project. Also want to point out "Choir Boy" on Broadway and "Fidler afn Dakh" by Folksbiene.

Show you liked least/hated most? Where do I begin? "Daniel's Husband", "Frozen", "Bernhardt/Hamlet", but many others disappointed me a great deal.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? No show in particular, but that, to generalize, Broadway (as well as off-) is filled with overpriced mediocrity. Moving to this city a year ago from Seattle I was expecting to see a lot of high quality theatre, and so far I have been disappointed, finding that Seattle was able to produce as good and better theatre.

Favorite male performance? Jacob Brandt in "1969: The Second Man"

Favorite female performance? Stacey Yen in "Intractable Woman" and "Miles for Mary"

I've seen eleven on Broadway (including Hamilton twice) and will be catching one more before the year ends. We also saw five regional productions, including Once on Long Island and in Philadelphia.

Show you liked/loved the most? Hamilton, To Kill a Mockingbird

Show you liked least? Carousel, though I did like it

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? The Arden in Philadelphia did Once in the round, and the staging was terrific (as was the whole production).

Favorite male performance? Jeff Daniels (TKAM), Wallace Smith (the best Mulligan/Madison I've seen so far)

Favorite female performance? Celia Keenan-Bolger (TKAM), Cherry Jones (Lifespan of a Fact)

Favorite New Song? Omar Sharif (The Band’s Visit)

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? Hadestown, Kiss Me Kate.

We have also booked Dear Evan Hansen and Merrily We Roll Along so far, as well as a few more slices of Ham.

How many shows have you seen this year?: 10 on Broadway, 20 US tours / regional shows.

Show you liked/loved the most?: Once on this Island still haunts me. I just cannot shake it. I had to see it multiple times while I was in New York. I just remember "Rain" from Once on this Island and get chills. If I lived close to New York, I'd see it as much as I possibly could before it closed. The last time I was so in love with a musical was when I saw Daddy Long Legs multiple times off-Broadway several years back.

Show you liked least/hated most?: The Lifespan of a Fact. I was mainly there for Daniel Radcliffe and I tried really hard to absolutely adore it, but, I felt that the story was thin and didn't have as much depth as it proclaimed to have. Just my opinion. I can't help that I didn't love it. I really wanted to love it. Maybe the fact that I was exhausted from being on a plane and running around airports with little sleep the day I saw it contributed to me not fully liking it as much as I could have.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)?: The Ferryman. I was surprised at the incredibly natural acting, at how human it was, and how I felt like I was having an intimate view into the real lives of this poor family that was on the brink of chaos. It was one of the most surreal theatre experiences I have ever had because the acting was just so raw and seamless. You didn't even feel like they were acting, it just felt like a normal family caught up in the eye of the storm...

Also, I was so pleasantly surprised by Head Over Heels. I read mixed reviews about it and went into it thinking I'd be all "Meh" about it but I walked away just absolutely loving every second of it and wish I had time to see it a second time.

Favorite male performance?: Paddy Considine from The Ferryman.

Favorite female performance?: Laura Donnelly from The Ferryman, Courtnee Carter from Once in this Island (she was the Ti Moune understudy), and Rachel York from Head Over Heels (WHAT A VOICE).

Favorite New Song: Head Over Heel's version of "Heaven is a Place on Earth"

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year?: Moulin Rouge! I've been waiting for it to be a Broadway musical ever since it came out when I was 11 years old. It's one of my favorite movies.

How many shows have you seen this year? 12 - Hamilton, Angels in America, Three Tall Women, Waitress (2x), Hello Dolly!, Mean Girls, Boys in the Band, Carousel, Kinky Boots (2x), Book of Mormon, A Chorus Line, Grand Hotel, Farinelli and the King, Travesties

Show you liked/loved the most? Hamilton, Three Tall Women, Boys in the Band, Travesties, Book of Mormon with the cast I saw

Show you liked least/hated most? Farinelli and the King. One of the rare shows where I could find nothing good about it. A Chorus Line.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? Travesties. I had never seen a Tom Stoppard play before and I absolutely loved the experience. Hamilton because after 3 years and countless ticketmaster queues I finally saw it and it was every bit as great as everyone said it was.

Favorite male performance? Nathan Lane in Angels in America, Michael Luwoye in Hamilton, J. Harrison Ghee as Lola in Kinky Boots, Robin de Jesus (Boys in the Band)

Favorite female performance? Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf in Three Tall Women, Irina Dvorovenko in Grand Hotel

Favorite New Song - I didn't like the musical but Apex Predator is a pretty awesome song. But on a general level, "Shallow" from A Star is Born

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? - King Lear with Glenda Jackson, Kiss Me Kate with Kelli O'Hara

How many shows have you seen this year?

Lost count, at least 10+ on Broadway

Show you liked/loved the most?

Ah, so many! The ones that leap to the front of my mind:

- To Kill a Mockingbird

- Angels in America

- The Band's Visit

All three of these were beautiful, exquisite, masterful productions. Loved all of them so much.

Show you liked least/hated most?

I really didn't see many I didn't like, because I try to only see shows I know I'll like. Least favorite was probably Straight White Men, but it was free + second night of previews so can't hate it too much.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)?

Bad surprised: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I was so hyped for this, especially after the excruciating ticketing process. It wasn't bad per se, but I didn't love it either. Well done, but not even the staging/effects 'wowed' me, and the writing/acting sure didn't make up for it. Might not be the biggest Potter fan, but I was still surprised at how underwhelmed I felt by it.

Good surprised: Network. Went in not knowing what to expect with all the more creative elements. I was shocked how well executed the staging was, and Bryan Cranston exceeded my expectations. The show was far from perfect but it surely was memorable.

Favorite male performance?

Andrew Garfield was an absolute revelation in Angels in America. His performance still haunts and resonates with me. Close runner-ups for Bryan Cranston and Jeff Daniels acting the house down.

Favorite female performance?

Probably Glenda Jackson in Three Tall Women. There were a lot of amazing performances this year but Glenda was just beyond. A true masterclass.

Favorite New Song

Answer Me from the Band's Visit, closely followed by pretty much every other song from TBV's soundtrack. So amazingly good, the whole album.

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year?

Moulin Rouge, Hadestown, Burn This, The Ferryman (technically out this year but seeing it next year)

Great idea. Im in Chicago but I made it to NYC twice. I caught 11 Broadway shows plus one Off-Broadway. In Chicago I have seen around 26 productions, including the Tootsie tryout. I saw one production while in Denver.

Show I liked the most: In NYC, The Ferryman. I loved every second of it. The final line gave me chills.

Also loved Hello Dolly with Bernadette, Once on This Island, Three Tall Women, The Boys in the Band, School Girls or The African Mean Girls Play, The Prom, The Waverly Gallery, and Landscape of a Fact.

In Chicago, amazing productions of All My Sons, The Wolves, Downstate by Bruce Norris, Radio Golf, Lettie by Boo Killebrew, Familiar by Danai Gurari, The Steadfast Tin Soldier (directed by Mary Zimmerman), Hello Dolly with Betty Buckley, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Harvest, and Traitor (a stunning adaptation of The Enemy of the People by Brett Neveu, directed by Michael Shannon).

Show that Surprised Me Most: NYC: The Prom. A real delight.

Chicago: Tootsie. This in good shape. I love some of the changes made from the film.

Favorite Male Performance. NYC: Bobby Cannavale and Daniel Radcliffe, The Landscape of a Fact and all the guys in The Ferryman, Robin de Jesus in The Boys in the Band, Charlie Stemp in Hello Dolly!.

Chicago: John Judd, All My Sons, K Todd Freeman, Downstate, Santino Fontana, Tootsie.

Favorite Female Performance: NYC: the women in Three Tall Women and School Girls and The Ferryman, Elaine May and Joan Allen in The Waverly Gallery, and Cherry Jones in The Landscape of a Fact.

Chicago: Caroline Neff, Lettie, the actresses in The Wolves and Familiar.

Ensemble: NYC: The Ferryman, Once on This Island and The Prom.

Chicago: Gypsy, The Wolves, All My Sons, Traitor, and Radio Golf.

Favorite New Song: NYC: Zazz from The Prom.

Chicago: there's a gorgeous recap song at the end of The Steadfast Tin Soldier

Looking Forward To: NYC: Hadestown on Broadway, Gary, King Lear, and Burn This.

Chicago: David Cromer's production of Next to Normal, Mary Zimmerman's production of The Music Man.

Disappointments: I don't regret anything I saw in 2018.

Your Theatre Year In Review 2018

I saw 35 on Broadway; twelve in London

My favorite shows/productions: I thought The Band's Visit was beautiful and a brilliantly performed and designed production; Three Tall Women reaffirmed my initial enthusiasm for the play when I saw it many years ago at the now defunct Promenade Theatre...a definite highlight of any season and the trio of acting was as good as it gets. I liked so much of Carousel, unlike many others on the board, and Justin Peck's choreography was splendid; it was just great to hear that score again with a large orchestra and I know that I'm in the minority in feeling that there was chemistry between Joshua Henry and Jessie Mueller; I loved The Ferryman in London and am looking forward to it here....

On the other hand, I was very disappointed in "Network"; it's shrill and van Hove's direction is very "theatrica" at the expense of the relationship between Max and Diana; most of the acting is indifferent,the one glaring exception is Bryan Cranston who is magnificent. And it's a humorless evocation of what was a really superb movie. I didn't care much for "Harry Potter", difficult to get into the plot even though I admired the technological wizardry on stage.

Biggest surprises for me were: "The Lifespan of a Fact"...I thought it was uproariously funny and the trio of Daniel Radcliffe/Cherry Jones/Bobby Cannavale was right up there with the trio of Three Tall Women. It was one of the most entertaining and pertinent plays I saw this year. I also liked "Lobby Hero" a great deal and "Straight White Men", both plays benefitted by superlative productions staged by Trip Cullman and Anna Shapiro. Two of the more "fantastic" experiences were the Yiddish "Fiddler on the Roof" and sitting in an actual courtroom in London seeing "Witness for the Prosecution"

My favorite male performances were Tom Hollander (so terrific in "Travesties"-- I think he should have won the Tony), Zachary Quinto and Jim Parsons in "The Boys in the Band", Daniel Radcliffe and Bobby Cannavale so beautifully matched in "The Lifespan of a Fact", Michael Cera in "Lobby Hero" and Bryan Cranston; also Nathan Lane in "Angels in America".

My favorite female performances were Elaine May in "The Waverly Gallery", Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf and Allison Pill in "Three Tall Women", Kerry Washington in "American Son (a major surprise as to how fine she is on stage), Cherry Jones in "Lifespan of a Fact"; Katrina Lenk in "The Band's Visit"

No favorite song really emerged for me this past season but I really don't need to hear "Let It Go" ever again.

Next year most looking forward to "The Lehman Trilogy", "Beetlejuice", "Moulin Rouge" and "All My Sons"...and I can't wait to see "To Kill a Mockingbird"-- Jeff Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Gideon Glick are three of my favorite stage actors

How many shows have you seen this year? 14

Show you liked/loved the most? Angels In America - life changing performance for one of my teens who also went. World class performances and beautifully staged

Show you liked least/hated most? Anastasia. It was a last minute replacement show the night that Jim Parsons injured his foot and had to step out of Boys In The Band. While Christy Altomere is very talented and the opening number was lovely, for the most part we felt like we were watching a Disney Theme Park level show. I actually dozed off briefly about halfway through.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? I was a bit disappointed in Long Day's Journey Into Night at BAM. It had more to do with the theatre - we were way up in the balcony and the acoustics were terrible, combined with Jeremy Irons' accent - than the performances. Wish we could have sprung for better seats.
Favorite male performance? Andrew Garfield was lovely, but I really enjoyed Zachary Quinto in Boys In the Band. Also loved Sydney James Harcourt in Girl From the North Country.

Favorite female performance? Hmm, we actually saw this right before New Year's last year, but we really loved Merle Dandridge in Once On This Island. She gave a wonderful take on Papa Ge in a gender bent role - we liked her even more than Alex Newell, who was also good when we saw it.

Favorite New Song - not new, but loved the performance of "Slow Train" in Girl From the North Country.

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? We have tickets to The Ferryman for next week and I have been dying to see that. For next year - Hadestown. Also interested in the new adaption of The Secret Life of Bees.

How many shows have you seen this year? — 4 (The King and I, An American in Paris, Wicked, and The Play That Goes Wrong - all National Tours)

Show you liked/loved the most? — Tie between An American in Paris and Wicked; they were both very good!

Show you liked least/hated most? — The King and I was my least favorite show that I saw this year. I loved the cast, but the show just didn’t appeal to me.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? — The Play That Goes Wrong was so funny, and as someone who works in technical theatre, I really enjoyed it!

Favorite male performance? — Ben Michael (Henri in An American in Paris) and Jason Graae (The Wizard in Wicked) were standouts to me, as well as Jon Robert Hall (Fiyero in Wicked).

Favorite female performance? — Mary Kate Morrissey (Elphaba) and Ginna Claire Mason (Glinda) were amazing as the witches in Wicked, and I also enjoyed Allison Walsh (Lise in An American in Paris) and Laura Michelle Kelly (Anna in The King and I)’s performances.

Favorite New Song — From shows I saw this year: I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise (An American in Paris) and What is This Feeling (Wicked). From any show this year: World Burn (Mean Girls) and the Bad Romance medley (Moulin Rouge!)

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? — Definitely Moulin Rouge!

clearastheday, Mary Kate Morrissey (Elphaba) and Ginna Claire Mason (Glinda) were phenomenal, werent they? I saw them three times when it toured through Tulsa again this year. The repeat visits were largely because of them.

How many shows have you seen this year? 11. 3 Broadway, 2 West End and 6 UK tours.

Show you liked/loved the most? Dear Evan Hansen

Show you liked least/hated most? Nativity the Musical. I liked it though.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? Company revival in London. I've never seen a Sondheim show before and I did think I would like it but I ended up loving it. I know it is advertised as a musical comedy but I was surprised by just how funny it was. I guess people don't focus on that aspect of it much when they talk about it?

Favorite male performance? Jonathan Bailey in Company

Favorite female performance? Rachel Bay Jones in Dear Evan Hansen

Favorite New Song? Overall - World Burn from Mean Girls. It actually ended up being my most listened to song in my 2018 Spotify Wrapped. Of shows I've seen this year, Pray from Once on this Island.

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? Come From Away in London.

Your Theatre Year In Review 2018

How many shows have you seen this year?
40 shows- 26 in New York, 9 in London and 5 touring/regional. Pretty good for a student living nowhere near New York.

Show you liked/loved the most?
Echoing many others but Angels in America is definitely my favorite of the year.

I saw it twice more this year, but Hello, Dolly still amazed and I'm sad it's gone. I also loved Company, Caroline, or Change and Hadestown in London.

Show you liked least/hated most?
Frozen was possibly the worst show I've ever seen. I also respect the show as a classic and the production was good, but I just did not enjoy myself at all at My Fair Lady.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)?
Mean Girls! I was worried going into it, but I truly loved it and think the score is super fun with a great book.

Also Angels surprised me because I did not expect it to effect me as much as it did.

Favorite male performance?

Easily Andrew Garfield in Angels. I get chills still just thinking about any of his many monologues. Special shoutout to Sam Clemmett. I love his portrayal of Albus in Cursed Child and sad he doesn't get as much recognition. I fell in love with the character greatly because of what he does with the role. I saw the show again in London and the actors was fine but Albus faded away, not leaving an impact. Sam really is great in the role and sad he'll be leaving.

Favorite female performance?

Denise Gough in Angels. I love Laurie Metcalf so much, but that Tony really should've gone to Denise. Sharon D. Clarke as Caroline in Caroline, or Change is one of the most fantastic performances I've seen and I really hope it has a life in NYC (unlikely though). Rosalie Craig as Bobbie in Company is also great, albeit her singing not powerful, but her acting is. Taylor Louderman also is just so great in Mean Girls.

Favorite New Song
Not technically new but the score of Hadestown is phenomenal with Wait for Me being the standout. I also love to throw on World Burn from Mean Girls quite often.

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year?

The mixed reviews are worrying but I am looking forward to Moulin Rouge. Hillary and Clinton and Superhero at 2ST are probably at the top of my list though.

Yerma was beyond every expectation I had.

Amy and the Orphans. I had no idea what the show was about. I was a complete basket case by the end of it.

Angels was a once in a lifetime experience as far as actors and performances go but the play itself was so self indulgent it became annoying by hour 7.

Favorite male performance?

James McArdle owned Angels for me.

The male London cast of Hamilton. They are all utterly brilliant.

Favorite female performance?

Billie Piper

Favorite New Song

I am still obsessed with Great Comet.

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year?

Hopefully Comet in London.

Yes, they were amazing! I saw them twice and they were just as good, if not better than second time. Definitely one of the best pairs Wicked ever had.

I'm enjoying reading everyone's responses in this thread. Clearly I've got some work to do in 2019.

How many shows have you seen this year? 6 shows: School of Rock, On Your Feet (National Tour in Chicago), Tribute concert to Alan Menken at Carnegie Hall, My Brilliant Divorce(off off Broadway play with Melissa Gilbert), Anastasia, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Still planning to see 1 or 2 more this coming week.

Show you liked/loved the most? Anastasia, On Your Feet

Show you liked least/hated most? School of Rock

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? School of Rock--I had heard a lot of hype about this one so I was disappointed that I didn't like it that much. Anastasia--surprisingly well executed on all levels. I hope it sticks around for a while. Summer--great performances and music but really bad book and sets. I feel for Donna's family as they seemed really excited about this.

Favorite male performance? Zach Adkins as Dmitry in Anastasia and Jared Zarilli as Bruce in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.

Favorite female performance? Christie Prades as Gloria Estefan in On Your Feet, Christy Altomare as Anya in Anastasia, Arianna Debose as Disco Donna in Summer

Favorite New Song Lin-Manuel Miranda did a Hamildrop with Ben Platt that I loved

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? Alice By Heart, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge

I love this!

How many shows have you seen this year? 5 in Broadway (I don't even live in the US : My Fair Lady, Mean Girls, The Band's Visit, Waitress, Anastasia. I also saw Ghost Quartet in Seattle and the Mexican productions of Les Mis, Hello Dolly! and The Last 5 Years.

Show you liked/loved the most? My Fair Lady. I just adore everything about it. Tied with Ghost Quartet.

Show you liked least/hated most? The Mexican production of Hello Dolly!. It needs A LOT of work.

Show that surprised you the most (good or bad)? Mean Girls. I thought it was going to be an ok show, but I was amazed. It moved me and as someone who grew up with the movie, I loved how they translated a lot of things.

Favorite male performance? Harry Hadden-Paton in My Fair Lady

Favorite female performance? Nicolette Robinson in Waitress

Favorite New Song "I'd Rather Be Me" from Mean Girls. (Unless you count music from revivals, then "I've Grown Accustomed to her Face" with its current arrangements)* This is just music released this year, right?

What announced show are you most looking forward to next year? Hadestown, and I'm still praying for a Company transfer
