Just to play devil's advocate, if you really look at the reviews, basically every one praised Glover's performance. I mean, go to stagegrade. Even the most negative ones made room to praise her "powerful" or "commanding" singing voice and/or her "elegant" or "sweetly straight-forward" characterization. And multiple reviews singled out her performance as being star-making and the village voice called her "a magnificent rescuer-in-chief" of the apparently sub-par material. Isherwood did call her out on the over-riffing and over-selling, but after saying that "Ms. Glover, beautiful and poised, brings a spark of toughness to her role as Felicia. She acts with a focused clarity and sings with intensity..."
Now, I haven't seen the show and I'm not in any way trying to debase the opinions of those here who did see it and didn't like her performance, but if you look back to the reviews, there's no reason her being in the running for the Tony should be a surprise.
And by the way, after reading all those reviews, it really is surprising that Sergio Trujillo didn't get nominated. Basically every one thoroughly praised the choreography, essentially they all called it the best part of the show.
If Glover wins over Sherie I will loose an incredibly large amount of respect for Tony voters. I would have sort of understood for CZJ seeing as she would have been a huge ticket draw and was giving a good performance. Glover was no better than any other replacement leading lady in another show. She had a good voice but definitely not a performance I can remember. If anyone besides Sherie or CZJ should get it it should be Christiane Noll or Kate Baldwin with Montego just filling that 5th slot.

I wholeheartedly agree.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
Let's face facts. The Tony people will never deny themselves a chance to gush over a Hollywood star. They want Cat on Broadway as often as they can get her. She's beautiful and talented. Plus, her winning the award will play well in Peoria because Peoria knows who CZJ is. Therefore, they will award her the Tony no matter what. The other ladies never had a chance.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Gothampc - and here I thought I was the biggest cynic on this board! Actually, I think you may be right. If Cat doesn't get her gold star, other Hollywood types may think twice about their chances, too, and apparently producers now think a West Coast type is necessary to open anything!
I love Montego Glover's voice but I wouldn't call her acting performance Tony quality. (Whatever that menas.)
Goth thats a good theory - except it doesn't hold true with the historical tastes of the Tony voters, who rarely award movie stars trodding the New York boards. As you say, if they were more welcoming perhaps we'd have more stars doing Broadway, but Broadway in this day and age in which you can't really find an audience without a major household name, loves to shoot itself in the foot but ostricizing the very people who can sell out a theatre - so my guess is that this year will be no different. I actually think Sherie Scott may take it because she fits the mold of Broadway rewarding its own over big name outsiders. For the record, as I've said before, I do think CZJ should win.
like they need to see her for her to win. i love when naive people think that reality mirrors their own little cozy world view.

My opinion is, if the big names are only doing the shows to win the awards, then stay in LA. let the people who want to be in a show, and would probably do a better job, be in them.

Nice theory except for one small problem: Kristen Chenoweth. Kristen is a Broadway star and all she's ever been rewarded with is a supporting Tony for "YAGMCB" Not even nominated for P/P.

Exactly. Who was the last movie star to win a Tony? I feel like it might have been Hugh Jackman, who was still ignored this season for A Steady Rain. The Tony voters and nominators have certainly ignored their fair share of movie stars. Julia Roberts, Daniel Craig, Daniel Radcliffe, Kevin Kline (last win was for the early 80s Pirates revival), Sean Combs, and Ashley Judd just to name a few of the more recent crop of Hollywood celebrities to trod the boards.
Of course, this year they could fool us all and do an almost total Hollywood sweep of the acting awards (and I'm not suggesting by any means that this is the way it will go, purely hypothetical, or the way it will turn out according to Goth's theory).
Any of the Best Actor in a Play nominees ("Hollywood" by default) Laura Linney - Best Actress in a Play Kelsey Grammer - Best Actor in a Musical Catherine Zeta Jones - Best Actress in a Musical David Alan Grier - Best Featured Actor in a Play Scarlett Johanssen - Best Featured Actress in a Play Best Featured Actor in a Musical (the odd man out here, no "Hollywood" names) Angela Lansbury - Best Featured Actress in a Musical (yes, she's also a Broadway name, but she is certainly not unknown to those who don't follow Broadway)

I agree with the earlier-expressed thought that this year's awards will be as easily forgotten and as meaningless as 1985's or 89's. Face it, no one but the most devout fanatic remembers what won in the best season, let alone the dreariest.

Unless, of course, those rubes in Peoria don't give an eff about the Tonys in the first place! Updated On: 5/20/10 at 10:27 AM
"Unless, of course, those rubes in Peoria don't get an eff about the Tonys in the first place!"
Which is the whole point of awarding CZJ. Several times the Tonys have almost been thrown off broadcast tv and banished to PBS. The Tonys are always aware that they need to do things to get their awareness up. The glamour of CZJ will get the Peoria rubes to tune in.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
But the entertainment shows don't heavily cover the Tonys and advertisement for them, at least here in Colorado, usually doesn't start until about a week or 2 weeks before the awards. The other awards get heavy coverage at least a month before the ceremonies. So those people in Peoria might not even realize when the awards are on if they don't catch the commercials.
Do people really watch the Tonys just to see the stars? And if so, won't they have to watch anyway, then? I mean, I know everyone on this board KNOWS who is a lock and who isn't, but they don't give the award until the ceremony is airing, so said rubes will have to already be watching.
Unfortunately, I think Sherie has no buzz. So few are talking about that show. (I'd also point to RAPTURE's two nominations to support this, but the nominating committee is, of course, a separate entity.)
And the LaChanze argument supports Sherie for the win. LaChanze was actually given around a 40% chance to win, averaging all the predictions. She was a veteran whom everyone liked, giving her best performance and carrying that show. (Patti was giving an performance many praised for its lack of star power, but true ensemble acting.)
I fear Montego may take it. The Tonys often like giving it to the young new performer, such as MARISSA JANET WINOKUR or SUTTON FOSTER.
Plus, her winning the award will play well in Peoria because Peoria knows who CZJ is.
I don't understand why people keep making this nonsensical point. They can't advertise the fact that CZJ will win, so how will her winning attract viewers? Her nomination means that some people could watch because she *might* win, but then they are already watching.
Really, people, think it through.
