CZJ was out last night, and both shows today. This is the week that several HUNDRED TONY voters from across the country gather in NYC for their annual road presenter conference. Naturally, in the evenings (and this afternoon), they all attend shows. A HUGE blow to CZJ's chances

Careful!!! If you say that, Waymon or SomethingWicked will come rushing in to claim that Memphis is being unfairly "bashed" again, and that it would have won all these awards no matter what season it was!
OK...call me crazy. Is there ANY possibility that with no CLEAR front-runner that there could be a lot of votes canceling each other out, and Noll or Baldwin score a huge upset??
You know, I don't love Memphis, but I'm somehow rooting for it, basically because I hated all the other nominees. It has a very good score though, listen to the CD, it's totally cheesy but the songs are great.

As much as I don't think Catherine deserves the Tony (she's my #4 out of the 5), I would GLADLY give it to her over Montego Glover any day of the week, any season, whatever. I just saw Memphis today and thought her acting was close to atrocious. How was she nominated and how has she all of a sudden become a threat to win this award?!
I saw LuPone, Foster or O'Hara taking it before LaChanze. But in this case, LaChanze deserved it.

Yeah, I was gonna say LaChanze looked like a 3rd placer until Tony night. But LaChanze is so much worthier in every way. Those were three Broadway "divas" reaching for that award that year.

Agreed, agreed. If I wasn't already bored with Montego from the beginning, I was done with her the moment I realized every song she sang ended with her doing the same riffs. And that "Colored Woman" song was forced in both the acting department and the vocal delivery of it. Woof. LaChanze didn't need to rely on melismata and vocal gymnastics, even if she's capable of doing them.
I remember I was rooting for LaChanze that year, and no one thought she'd win. I didn't like Patti Lupone in Sweeney(that people on this BWW said she was winning for sure), Sutton Foster in Drowsy Chaperone(the show had a huge buzz I never got) and the amazing Kelli O'Hara was in a show I didn't enjoy where she didn't really show her talent(The Pajama Game), Chita Rivera also had big chances of winning, since she is a Broadway favorite. Anyways, I think both Montego and LaChanze are in the same category, both their voices crack at times, and acting-wise I think they are in the same level. But I prefer Montego because LaChanze barely showed up in TCP.
