I don't think it applies to the other haters but I'm still trying to figure out how a musical with mostly negative reviews picked up 12 Drama Desk nods.
Cry Baby is better than the haters would have you believe and IMO A Catered Affair is a little better than the reviews but not 12 nods better
I was at the invited dress rehearsal the day before previews and I saw it again tonight. It was pretty okay at the invited dress but it was loads better tonight. The changes they've made have made the show much more fluid (switching songs around). I didn't have a problem with it before but I like it more now. Most seem to think it's an awful show, but if you go into it expecting an amazing show or expecting the movie, you probably won't like it. Heads up though, none of the movie songs are in the show. Just go into it with a clean palette and hopefully you'll enjoy yourself. If you read all of these negative reviews, you're either going to go into it already disliking it or love it because of a pre-conceived low expectation. I really liked it. Yes, I've seen better shows, but this is by far NOT the "worst show I've seen."
So I got tckets throught TDF to see this show, regardless of the reviews. (I want to make my pwn opinion) My question is...what is the run time? The standard 2 hrs 45 minutes or so?
I thought it had a lot of really funny moment and good lyrics in places. The choreography was amazing. I think the flaw of the show is that there just isn't enough plot to spread it out over the amount of time it takes. It drags and repeats itself a lot. I saw it last night, but wished that it was still in previews, because I feel like two more weeks and they could have it so much tighter.
The changes have made it a completely different show. I urge people (especially if you're students and can get student tix) who saw it during its early previews to see it again
totally agree with this. the switching around of some of the songs in the beginning of the show (nobody gets me for instance) was perfect as was adding a reprise for allison. I also feel "a whole lot worse" works better than "class dimissed." Anyway, just my opinion.
I saw it a second time this week and was pleasantly surprised with the changes since early previews. The first act seems to run a lot faster than it did before. part of this is from the smoother transitions between scenes and set pieces. I also liked the re-ordering of some of the songs. the dancing was already pretty hot but it now really pops. regardless of what you think of the show, the whole cast really works their collective ass off.
I'd recommend this to others looking for an entertaining evening at the theater (tho not to theater snobs except at a discount - LOL). looks like it could play well to the tourist and bridge&tunnel crowd.
I saw this show tonight thanks to TDF. I had great seats...mezz row D...house right. The sad part is...half of the mezzanine was empty...the usher let myself and the guy next to me move to the center of our section as soon as the lights went down.
The show itself...well I have to agree with what some of the posters said. The choreography was great...lots of energy from start to finish. The book was rather weak, and I found many of the songs to be forgettable.
The only character that stood out for me was Lenora (Alli Mauzey...hope I spelled that correctly). She was great and made me laugh every time she walked on the stage! The leads were okay but nothing to write home about (I blame the writers for this one...give the leads more to work with...they should be memorable...not blah...).
All in all, I'm glad I saw it...train-wreck or not (as some would call it). I'm also glad I got cheap tickets. I cannot see myself paying full price for this show. Based on the crowd tonight, I don't forsee it sticking around much longer than the Tony's, but hey what do I know? My suggestion? If you want to see it...buy the cheaper mezzanine tickets. They are still good seats, and you'll save yourself some money.
