I'm shocked people have yet to mention Ragtime.

This show is one of the best shows to come along in a while. With an almost flawless score, book, and opening cast, I'm really surprised it didn't work.
I think it might not have done that well because there was nothing that made every day people wanna see it. No big names, it wasn't based on a famous movie or book, and it wasn't just a recognizable name.
It really is such an incredible show.

I agree with you. I guess because all of those things, it is thought of as a success among musical theater people. That's probably why it hasn't come up...
But I don't want it to have another chance because that would mean a new cast and everything about the original production was perfection...

parade and taboo (though i disagree about getting rid of rosie. she wasn't the problem, the director was.)
i also agree about merrily- the kennedy center production absolutly knocked my socks off. it was like two hours of "WOW!"
mr. raul got like 45 seconds of appaulse after "franklyn sheppard inc"

Ragtime was the first show to pop into my mind, and I'm happy other people thought of it too.

taboo, yes... new book writer perhaps? but the score is unbelievably strong... and a great theatre score, not all pop.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's ASPECTS OF LOVE.

It is arguably his best musical score ( romantic, lyrical, complex) and the theme is quite contemporary.

Likewise, his newer musicals : WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND and THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

I like Ragtime very much. But it wasn't a failure. The show ran for two years and is still touring.

I believe what brought about its early Broadway closing was that the company that was producing it (Livent) got into financial and legal trouble.

dracula and dance of the vampires were both amazing shows that definitely deserve another chance. why must broadway hate vampires?

Hmm...it's interesting that Caroline, or Change and Ragtime seem to be the popular vote here, and they both had nothing marketable about to it ordinary people.

Is it safe to say that most shows that we thing deserve another change usually are pretty brilliant but don't appeal to people outside of the musical theater community?

I didn't wanna see Caroline or Change at all until I saw some clips of it. After I bought the cast recording I really wanted to, but it closed too soon.

I wouldn't say that statement is true, regarding RAGTIME. It was a hit. The problem with it was that its cast was too large, they produced an equally large touring company (to the exact same scale as the Broadway production) when the show was still running on Broadway, and had a competing production of SHOW BOAT, all at the same time. That and the creative financing that went on, ruined the production company. The touring production was sold out at every performance.

I see. But I don't think the show would have worked as well with a smaller cast. You needed the three distinct groups of whites, blacks, and immigrants, and the show wouldn't have succeeded vocally with a smaller cast.

Do you really think the cast was too large?

I enjoyed most of Thou Shalt Not...

I think that there are some shows out there that should be revisited.

I like what songs I've heard from Thou Shalt Not. I mean, yeah it's different.. but I like that kind of music and Harry Conick Jr. I just don't know if it was the story (which I know pretty much nothing about)??
