Blah Blah Blah Yadda yadda yadda. It's only an announcement. I'll wait till there's actually something to see until I start b*tchin' about how bad it is.
What worries me is that we know Burton and Depp tend to come as a package -- but is Depp being thought of for the role because he can sing or because of the package deal? To NOT cast a REAL singer in this role would be heresy.
Wait a minute...they aren't doing this in claymation like Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, are they?
Actually, that'd be kinda cool...kinda.
Can Johnny Depp even sing low enough for Sweeney?
I would have loved for Burton to tackle Into the Woods, a Sondheim show that is more Burton's type of material. I'm scared he'll do something funny out of Sweeney instead of making it a scary thriller with some funny moments which is the way I think the film would work. The idea of Johnny Depp excites me because 1. I think highly of him as an actor, 2.He's going to attract people to see Sondheim's work. I was so excited with the idea of Sam Mendes as director, but I'm going to give Burton a chance because he deserves it, I'm wondering how much input Sondheim has in these decisions too.
Depp already turned Gene Wilder's lovable, empathetic, magical Willy Wonka into a Michael-Jackson-Meets-Marilyn-Manson creep. I wonder what will happen with Sweeney Todd. I hope he doesn't ruin one of my favorite musicals like he did to my liking of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.
Okay, I admit Depp & Burton took Wonka into a Michael Jackson Hell Night, And Ray - What a great idea for Burton to do "Into the Woods" instead, He would be good with that! Anyway, Burton and Depp can also be quite fab so I say we see where they are heading with this. A Clay-Mation Sweeney would ROCK by the way - good thinking 24601!

Can Burton do anything that doesn't involve those (very, very lovable) cartoony proportions? This movie will not work unless it's taken seriously. I love him to bits, but this can't be a sister movie to something like Edward Scissorhands. I'm very afraid.
I want Mendes BADLY.
Nooooo.
I hope this does NOT happen, and they go back to Mendes.

Maybe a Chocolate Factory reunion:
Freddie Highmore as Tobey
David Kelly as the Judge
Noah Taylor as Pirelli
Maybe Sondheim will insist on Bernadette Peters as the Beggar Woman.

as i'm thinking about this idea, the more i like johnny depp as sweeney but he MUST be a good singer to tackle this role, no matter what.

I dont want Helena Boham Carter as Mrs.Lovett, I'm not a big fan of her. I wanted a Meryl Streep or a Glenn Close to play Lovett, obviously this won't happen given Johnny Depp's age. Isn't he a bit too young to play Sweeney though? Like how old would Joanna and Anthony have to be to play the young romantic lovers?
ok someone tell me that this is a big joke. i'm sorry but johnny depp?!?! no stay away from the musical genre hunny. personally it would be hot if they got michael cerveris to play sweeney on screen. he's doing an amazing job with the show right now.
may i ask who is this Mendes? that everyone has mentioned....

Mendes= Jarhead, Cabaret on bway.
Johnny Depp needs to get his ass into The Rum Diary, which has been in the works for FAR too long.
Actually, that's a thought- for how much longer is he tied up with Pirates of the Carribean? If they'd have to wait a long time for him, there's a greater chance of this being killed.

British director
Cabaret on Broadway
Bernadette Peters Gypsy
American Beauty
IMDB lists Mendes as director

They filmed Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 back to back, and I'm pretty sure they've finished filming both films. According to IMDB he does have some other projects already lined up, though (including The Rum Diary).
I'm not sure what I think of him as Sweeney. It might actually work. I haven't heard him sing, and I hope that he can handle the role vocally if he is cast.
I'm a bit biased because I love Tim Burton's work, but I think this is great, he and Depp always work well together, and as long as Johnny can sing, I say he should go for it.
Gothampc...
thank you. now i know who you all were talking about.
I agree with Pinguin and Patronus on this one.
Yet it is still very intriguing, and really sounds more plausible than the Mendes-Crowe version I was not really excited about.
I think Burton has a very dept touch and this material IS funnier than it is DARK, and these two are excellent at both.
If it happens, it may be great or terrible.
What is the deal with so many people wanting Lauper for Lovett? I just don't see it.
Hey, he'd do it ALOT better than Rusell Crowe would have. That rumour made me feel so dirty.
For some odd reason I really really like this idea. I mean, I'll openly admit that it could crash and burn quite easily but if it doesn't it could end up being a very amazing film. I never thought much of Johnny Depp at first but I've recently come to notice that he's a really strong actor, and I've heard him say that music is his first love. As for Tim burton...everything he does has a strong Tim Burton feel to it, this is true but i think this could be an instance where a very unlikly match ends up being amazingly good like peanut butter and chocolate, really who woluld have thought the two would make such good reeses cups? Not me, thats for sure. I could go for some chocolate right now. So in conclusion, um...chocolate.
I believe Lauper can do anything, She doesn't need Sweeney or to ever do Lovett, Her name was brought up a while ago as possible replacement for LuPone in the Revival, and if so she would have rocked no doubt. She has more talent in her pee than most do in their whole aura.
I wouldn't ant to see Glenn Close as Lovett, She brings the same old villaness to every dark role she does and I don't need 101 Dalmations in Sweeney. (Close ruined Norma Desmond and they gave her a Tony, Go Figure.)
Meryl can sing , She can act too, and she wont do Cruella as Lovett. Helena is lovely but all wrong.
Oh yes, If Sweeney's daughter is of legal age at 18 let's say, He's most likey 36 or more years in age. I don't think they ever say. Is Depp not around 40 himself?
One good thing about Depp - he can act. I'll bet he sings, He had a group when he was young.
I think Burton's a near perfect choice for the property. I'm not sure I'd pick Depp for the lead, though.

i'm ok with these two... and if these two are true, i could easily see lauper as lovett, and bonham-carter as the beggar lady.
