Oh no! This is such sad news! EVen sadder is that I just saw it tonight (AND LOVED IT!) but waiting at the stage door, we were told that they were having a meeting inside. I now realize what that meeting was for. The cast must have forced a happy face on when they left the theater, because they seemed absolutely fine.
This is really getting majorly depressing. First, Ragtime, now Finian's! God, what is there on Broadway anymore beyond celebrity casting, Hair, and next to normal?!
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
"Too bad that you're the only one who thought that... "
Nonsense.
And incidentally, there's a far larger world of opinions out there than those expressed on Broadway World. (As if there were even 100% unanimity- minus myself- on this board.)
Friends of mine refused to go with this rationalization: "It's just a concert version moved into a Broadway house and charging twice the price." It's hard to fight that. In these times, people want bang for their buck (as, euch, Wicked continues to prove.)

Except it's not... they turned it into a full scale production during the transfer. It's not a concert version anymore at all.
Too bad. I saw the show only this Sunday, went in with no expectations whatsoever and thought it was terrific. Not a mind-blowing smash, mind you, but a charming, thoughtful production that really snuck up on me. Smartly staged and exceptionally sung. Sad to see it go, but at least we'll get a recording out of it.
Will Cheyenne Jackson be a regular on 30 ROCK now? I don't think anyone thought this would be a hit, good for the producers for letting people see this show after the Encores! production.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I think your friends were right in their assessment. I thought it worked better at Encores. There the expectations are lower regarding production values, whereas on Broadway, the lack thereof really sticks out like a sore thumb.
