I just thought it'd be interesting to hear what people's favorite shows are. If you have several, list them. This is a discussion thread so if there is debates that'd be great! Mine are Jersey Boys and Memphis. I really like tough gritty musicals. Share your thoughts!

The Phantom of the Opera, of course, as if everyone couldn't tell from my screen name. Second is My Fair Lady. I can't think of a third, which is apparently unusual for a Phantom phan -- most of us seem to adopt the "competition" (Les Mis, of course) as one of our favorites, but I find the middle too boring. Maybe Carousel or South Pacific or Fiddler on the Roof would be number three.

Least favorite: Jekyll and Hyde, which I just saw at the Kennedy Center, and Into the Woods, which I've only seen in local theater. However, I'm not a big fairy tale fan.

You alone can make my song take flight.

I have made lists of my favorite musicals through the years and looked aghast at where I placed certain shows, like when I placed Spiderman ahead of West Side Story. Yikes.

But for now:

The Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Rent
West Side Story
Chicago
Oklahoma!
The Music Man
Spring Awakening
Avenue Q

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Ten of my favorite musicals, not necessarily in order:

Cabaret
Nine
The Producers
The Full Monty
Chicago
The Music Man
Chorus Line
Avenue Q
Kinky Boots
Catch Me If You Can

A few that come to mind:

Catch Me If You Can
Newsies
Jekyll & Hyde (the original 1997 Production)
Wicked
The Producers
Ghost
Next to Normal

There's not a specific genre that I like. The score is most important to me (I especially love powerful ballads), and then the plot.

She Loves Me. For me, no other show succeeds so brilliantly in the right hands or hits/exceeds its mark on so many key fronts:

feeling *****
subplot *****
romance *****
particularization *****
comedy *****
gorgeous music *****
exquisitely crafted lyrics consistently matched in lyricism by the libretto in both structure and dialogue *****
pivotal numbers capable not only of stopping the show but of breaking your heart, sometimes simultaneously *****
pacing and economy *****
intelligence *****
an abundance of beautifully drawn characters *****
enthralling act and final curtains *****

emotional satisfaction *****

A Chorus Line, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, Show Boat, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, and Into the Woods round out my top ten.
