Say you meet someone on the street and they ask you "What one cast recording would you recommend?" (yes, I know, random situation, but just work with it lol). What would you recommend? (from any time)
I'd recommend Rent. Its my favorite show, has a wide variety of music, and is VERY good.
For just a feel good CD, I would recommend "Hairspray" but if I were asked to recommend something musically brilliant, it would have to be "Sweeney Todd".
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
Either tick, tick... BOOM! or Songs For A New World.
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."
I think SFANW might be on the verge of perfect. But I digress!

I would reccomend the TRIPLE CD recording of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA (1956).
The ENTIRE original Broadway Production was recorded of Frank Loesser's marvelous, ground-breaking, semi-operatic musical with opera star Robert Weede and Jo Sullivan (a WICKED saproano!).
Songs include "Big D," "My Heart is So Full of You," "Standing On The Corner," "Happy to Make Your Acquaintance," "Joey, Joey." Actually, the ENTIRE score is OUTSTANDING!
ALL the dialogue is retained.
It truly is a UNIQUE experience to wirness a Broadway musical EXACTLY as it was performed on stage.
If you've never heard it, it is a MUST!!! (Unfortunately, I believe it is out of print.)
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."
"I've always secretly longed for an actress to get to the top of the cherry picker and projectile vomit all over the guards below."- Wonderwaiter in the "Defy Gravity?" thread.
~~~~~~~~My dream? Sutton Foster as Cassie in A Chorus Line
*gasp* Chrysanthemum62001, you MUST pick up a copy (or borrow it) RIGHT NOW!! For timelessness i would go for Les Miz but for something new i would recommend either Taboo or SFANW
"Chicago is it's own incredible theater town right there smack down in the middle of the heartland. What a great city! I can see why Oprah likes to live there!" - Dee Hoty :-D
Thoroughly Modern Millie - Sutton Foster is amazing. That was one of my first CDs that I wore out, and it skips everytime I listen to "Forget About the Boy".
I would also recommend the Producers.
"We like to snark around here. Sometimes we actually talk about theater...but we try not to let that get in our way." - dramamama611
I would have to recommend rent I can listen to that cd til the day I die and not get sick of it. Aida and Wicked are also two of my favs, but if I had to have one cast recording it would be Rent.
"I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason, bringing something we must learn, and we are lead to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return" Galinda
Millie, because the music and Sutton are beyond amazing!!! I would suggest "Wonderful Town," but I think there are certain songs like "Conga!" and "Conversation Piece" which need to be seen in order to truly appreciate them.
"Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one."
-Stella Adler
