Does anyone know what the incredibly talented Michael Arden is up to writing-wise? I have been "revisiting" Easter Rising - and I really hope we hear more music from Michael soon. Honestly, I think Easter Rising's story is kind of a mess - cliche-filled...and some of the lyrics seem pretty rough... BUT Michael Arden's melodies are really beautiful. Songs like "Just Now", "Still Waiting", "Take Me Back", "I'm Not Afraid", "Breakfast"/("The Road").. all have a very strong melodic drive. I've also heard some of Michael's music for "Ripley" - his show based on "The Talented Mr Ripley" - and these songs show lots of promise - especially "What Is To Love". I think with the right story, he could write some amazing music...
Hear! Hear!
He's so busy deliverying PIZZA I hope he has time to write.
His writing is amazingly deep for such a young man.
But than again so are his acting and singing.
Many shows come to mind for Him: "Greenwillow"
Just imagine that voice on
"Never Will I Marry"!
"Half A SIxpence" all charm and he is loaded with it.
"Where's Charley" He showed dancin' skills in PIPPIN and he has wonderful comic timimg.
But the Best would be a new show catered to his talents by the creative people out there,
: Guittel, Brown, Tessauri....
SHAIMAN??
Let's go guys
is there a recording of "What Is To Love"?

I've heard a few of his songs and they are amazing. I wish I could of seen the Easter Rising reading so I could hear the whole score.
Well according to Michael himself, he has a show at Joe's Pub on May 2nd at 9:30. Tickets are $15. Apparently it's a very last minute thing. Hopefully they'll actually get the link working from Joe's Pub and/or Telecharge so people can buy tickets. Or you could always call Joe's Pub itself.
It will feature contemporary composers, new stuff from his show and some guest stars. Go, now. Go. (I'll kiss the feet of anyone who gets that non-theater reference. )
ETA: Doh, forgot the link to Joe's Pub.
May Calendar at Joe's Pub
Thanks for the info Trisk!

I havent heard any of easter rising but would love to, if he can write half as well as he can perform it should be orgasmic to listen to. Is there anyway to here some of his music?
This has been posted before but on brianlowdermilk.com is some links to Michael Arden's songs from a recent April 3 reading of a new musical The Unauthorized Biography of Sara Brown. I was there and it was great fun. Celia Keenan Bolger was also in the reading but it is not her singing in the song links.
How about stuff that he has written? Are they available somewhere?

Me too. I wish he would do another reading of it again.
Dear tumadre2,
you're amazing. one thing - isn't the first song called "first letter"? and did the show initially end with "when you fly" or am I just crazy?

Heeeey - it was no problem. I have my program right in front of me, and it says "The Letter." *shrug* "First Letter" wouldn't make much sense, I think, cause it's the ONLY letter sung in the show, and it's the LAST letter Caleb sends Andrew before Andrew goes to him.
I don't know if it initially ended with "When You Fly" - I only saw the readings at Joe's Pub, and those def ended with "Take Me Back"

Hey! My friend recently turned me on to this and I dug up this thread to ask if anyone has any more info about this and what Michael Arden is up to? Thanks in advance!
Arden is killing audiences in THE TIMES THEY ARE A'CHANGING in San Diego.
I hear he has rewritten the book of EASTER RISING himself and several producers and workshop outlets are interested in it.
Let's hope it gets done soon.
Oh yeah, He also just got a L.A. Drama Circle Nomination for Beat Lead Performance for PIPPIN.

I heard he has been writing a musical version of "The Talented Mr. Ripley". He played them for a friend of mine and my friend said that they were unbelievably good.
The couple songs I have heard from "Ripley" are indeed amazing. Mr. Arden's talent has and will always amaze me.
What is the plot of Easter Rising?
"Easter Rising focuses on the last few weeks of the life of Caleb. As his battle with terminal cancer draws toward a close, Caleb confronts buried relationships with his estranged childhood friend Andrew and his teenage son John vis a vis his a love for his fiance April. Set in Plano, Texas this four person song cycle questions the limits of love, definition of family and the morals we pass on to our children when our own are in debate."
I've heard a few songs from Easter Rising and two songs from his musicalisation of Ripley and thought they were all astonishing.
easter rising is definitely amazing.
i'm just wondering, was the storyline
written by him, or did he adapt it?
