This is only worth the time it takes for you to read it really...but in my opinion, Drowsy didn't win because of the tony voter make-up of touring-theatre-voters, who place their vote on what they think will make the most money for their theatre when the show tours. Of Drowsy and Jersey...it is this actor's opinion that Jersey will sell better than Drowsy in touring productions. It is also this actor's opinion that DROWSY is the BETTER show. It is the only original piece of theatre to hit the broadway stage. Politics of awards shows do not equal artistic integrity. Congratulations to both shows...let's see what the new season, which begins Tuesday, has to offer. I look forward to getting upset being elated, screaming, being snarky and everything else that comes along with being a musical theatre fan again this time next year. As it was said tonight: GOD BLESS THE THEATRE!

What are everyone else's thoughts?

"It is the only original piece of theatre to hit the broadway stage"

Ummm....no.

In My Life was far more original (and entertaining) than Drowsy, which was merely a collection of show-queen injokes around a mediocre score. Yes, IML was bad, but it NEVER let the audience get bored.

Ummm....yes it did. That show really bored me.

My feeling is that Drowsy is a love letter to theatre; nothing more, nothing less. Although I enjoyed the show, I didn't think that it deserved the Tony. The only place that it will do well is among theatre lovers, among any other crowd, too many jokes would go over peoples' head. Drowsy is a cute and fun show, but I don't feel that it deserved more than it got.

Whatever happened to class?

Drowsy was an expensive nap.

Drowsy didn't win Best Musical because it is NOT the Best Musical the season. That's it.

"Why Drowsy didn't take Best Musical"

Short answer: Because Jersey Boys is better all around. Drowsy has its moments, but Jersey Boys is simply the best.

PLEASE STOP COMPLAINING. It's over and done. Jersey Boys won. (Ooo, a rhyme.)

If you want to complain, how about complaining about Drowsy winning for Best Score. A song about a MONKEY? Honestly.

Did not see any of the nominees, but based on the numbers shown tonight, The Color Purple was the only one that I would book a ticket for. As for the revivals, I saw Sweeney and loved it. Based on the number performed tonight, Pajama was fun, fun, fun. Sweeney's number was botched in editing. I see a good tour coming for Pajama.

I honestly cannot judge shows, I did not see Jersey Boys. But in reference to the comment about the monkey song ("The Bride's Lament") it is SUPPOSED to be laughably atrocious, and it succeeds. Bob Martin even STATES how bad the lyrics are, so in essence, you gave him the reaction he and the songwriters desired. And "...Porn" in Q is a wonderful statement of how our society needs to loosen up and accept human nature.

Yeah, I can see that CurtainUp, but I saw the show, and I just think the number didn't work at all. It got the reaction, but almost too realistic. Like "so bad that it was...bad" not "so bad that it was good". And about "Porn" in Q, I was referring to the musical winning Best Musical, not the song in particular. re: Why Drowsy didn't take Best Musical

I agree with the voters. I felt "Drowsy" deserved a good amount of recognition but that "Jersey Boys" ultimately deserved Best Musical... any show based on a previously existing catalogue of music that manages to break the jukebox trend and succeed deserves merit on that factor alone, not to mention just how great JB is regardless.

I do feel, however, that "The Color Purple" should have won for Score over "Drowsy"....

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

I may be burned at the broadway stake for this, but I think Drowsy was not robbed, but over compensated. I saw it recently and I felt a little cheated. I'd already seen Throughly Modern Millie, thankyou. To me it felt like everyother 1920's/1930's musical I'd seen. The biggest number wasn't a awe inspiring number it promised it to be. It's a fun musical, but...not giving it best musical may have been the only Tony decision I agree with. I would however, rather see it win then see the glorified tribute concert known as Jersey Boys win.

This coming from the person who lists Lestat as one of their favorite shows in their profile. Now there is taste we can trust and agree with.

The show won so many awards. It won best score/book, so in my mind, it was logical that it would win Best Musical, but I gues not. Oh well, it will still have a long healthy run. It's an easy show to run so I'm sure it will recoup. It's selling out the huge Marquis theater, so I'm sure it will do fine on tour as well.

And can Sutton please do something contemporary? I like her enough, but I'm sick of seeing her in these period shows. Esp the freakin' 20s.

Hmmm....maybe you should ask why she listed Lestat....maybe because of Susan Hilferty's costume design...? Maybe?? Or maybe because she's a Hugh Panero fan? Hmmm....?

Lets all have three cheers for being informed before sounding like an arrogant prat...

Well, just because she liked Lestat it doesn't mean she can't express her point of view. We all have a "bad" show we liked.

First of all, let me just start off by pointing out that my Lestat reference was intended to be taken in jest. But since you recoiled in a rather unpleasant way, let me comment.

"Hmmm....maybe you should ask why she listed Lestat....maybe because of Susan Hilferty's costume design...? Maybe?? Or maybe because she's a Hugh Panero fan? Hmmm....? "

Well, if you were a Hugh Panaro fan, a listing of his name under Favorite Actors probably would suffice. Also, you cannot tell me that Lestat was one of your favorite shows based SOLELY on the fact that only the costumes were beautiful. Lestat is listed under your "Favorite Shows", meaning it was one of your favorite shows. Not saying there is anything wrong with that, that's your perogative. But let's not bulls**t ourselves with excuses.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a good show in what it sets itself out to do, it's a well-structured, fun, escapist love-letter to the musical theater. Jersey Boys is also successful in that it reaches what it attempts to achieve, it has a flawless direction, book, choreography, and superb acting. Both shows probably had great chances of winning, and probably political reasons (i.e. how much money each show will make on tour)pushed Jersey Boys to the top.

I haven't seen JERSEY BOYS, so I'm totally fine that it won; the Tony voters apparently knew what they were doing. It obviously did something better than my pick (DROWSY), as well as better than the other nominees, however, something in the logic of the voting just doesn't make any sense to me.

How could a show with the season's best book, the best score, the best sets and the best costumes be a less Tony-worthy production than that of a musical with an [apparently] inferior book, set and costumes, all based on an unoriginal story, employing a "greatest hits" album for a score? Granted, JERSEY had its' lighting and an amazing turn by its' "breakthrough" leading actor, but that hardly makes it the overall better production. I also think, having not seen the show, but followed most of the televised appearances made by the Jersey Boys and JLY (who I was rooting for), that both shows had equally hard working and brilliant ensemble casts who constantly gave amazing performances. Rightly, both shows were awarded for the brilliant work of their featured personalities. I will add that DROWSY stood no chance in the leading actor category due to it's leading actor's non-singing, non-dancing role amongst 4 singing, dancing, and celebrated competitors. JLY deserved his award, but, in the bigger picture, I think that both actors pull an equal weight in their respective productions and are equally crucial and hardworking in their shows.

It is unlikely that I will get to see JERSEY BOYS [live] anytime soon and I'm not at all attacking the show OR looking for your snarky, rude remarks, but, instead, would just like for someone who's seen both (or preferably ALL nominated) shows to respectfully explain to me this "it" factor which no one can seem to articulate that gives JERSEY BOYS its' edge over the other musicals nominated this season. Thanks!

I feel that Drowsy should have won because it was the most originale out of the bunch. It was not based on a movie, or a novel, or on a musical group. Yes, it contains a part of a plot that is 1920s, but so what? It worked in the 1920s.

I have found recently that I have been going back to old movies like White Christmas, Court Jester and other 30s and 40s movies because I want a sweet tale and some nice music to listen to. Broadway for me, when I first got really interested, was escaping reality. and if more musicals are going to be based on other material, I don't think it is worth to see it more than once. But with Drowsy, I can and probably will see it many times.

Maybe I really liked it because it reminded me of my first musical that I saw (Crazy For You) and how awesome that was and how I want more of that onstage then some stuff that we have on now.
