What are some shows that are thought of as good, that didn't do well in their original run.
So far I can think of, Side Show, The Secret Garden, Ragtime, Merrily We Roll Along
not in it's original run but definitley Journey's End!
I loved the BELLS ARE RINGING revival. JANE EYRE was a big one, too. PARADE should have last much longer as well.

Sunday in the Park with George
Sweeney Todd
Follies
Ragtime
And, not an original production, but wasn't the Oklahoma! revival a flop? If, so, I add it to my list.
I dont you can call Secret garden a flop.

Secret Garden didn't flop. It ran almost 3 years.
SMILE!!!!!!
THE WEDDING SINGER
THE PIRATE QUEEN
yeah
there are more...
If Secret Garden did not make its money back, it was a flop, regardless of how long it ran.
I wholeheartedly agree with The Wedding Singer and The Pirate Queen.
I'd also like to add The Scarlet Pimpernel...one of my favorite cast recordings

Eh, Hello?!
MACK & MABLE!
Brilliant show! Pity about the 66 show run!
SEUSSICAL
Ran for 6 months, which isn't a complete flop. But still should have done better.
I don't cared what people say but I loved Sunset Blvd(it was my first show and hooked me on broadway) but it still flopped

I would hardly call Side Show a good show. Not terrible, but hardly in the same realm as Ragtime, and Merrily.

Sunset Blvd. is a nice show. Not great, perhaps not even good. But I do like some of the music.
Now, Mack & Mable, that's a GREAT show.

THE WEDDING SINGER
THE PIRATE QUEEN
yeah

I would not put Pirate Queen on the list, it does fit the criteria for a flop but not the GOOD SHOW part.
Zzzzzz....
Another post full of:
How DARE YOU call X a flop??? It ran forever!!!
It wasn't a flop! It was so good! My grandma really enjoyed it!
X could not have been a flop! The time I saw it the audience clapped vey hard! Yeah!
Made investment back = HIT
Did not make it back = FLOOOOOOP
TapTapTapioca, its a matter of opinion. :)
As was mentioned in a recent thread, Neil Simon's hilarious musical LITTLE ME(1962), starring the brilliant comic Sid Caesar, received rave reviews but ultimately flopped with 275 performances because it opened during a NYC newspaper strike and the good word didn't get out until it was too late to do any good.

I think Secret Garden made a **** load of cash on the tour.
As for Merrily, it wasn't a "good" show on Broadway. Trust me.

BFB is right--Secret Garden recouped (and how!) on tour. This always comes up--are we discussing real disastrous flops or shows that merely failed to recoup (ie by Sondheim terms are we discussing Merrily We Roll Along or Whistle--or merely nearly any of his other shows? :P)
All Shook Up.
