I am looking for a really, really nice expensive restaurant for a special family birthday party. After struggling to find restaurants I like in the theater district for years, I have finally decided to look outside it. Does anyone know of restaurant within 10-20 blocks of the theater discrict that is very fancy and suitable for a nice birthday party? Preferably, it would be between 10th and 5th avenues and 20th and 60th streets. Thanks!

A couple of years ago, my wife and I went to Bobby Flay's Bar Americain on 52nd Street. It was very, very good.

Thanks Brian! That is actually one of our choices.
Any others?

There are a lot of fancy/super-expensive restaurants in the Time-Warner mall on 59th Street.
Also look on Restaurant Row (46th).

I love Bobby Flay's Bar Americain as well. I also love the italian restaurant on restaurant row, Becco. It's not INCREDIBLY gorgeous or REALLY REALLY expensive. But they are relatively high prices and the quality of the food is also fantastic. Service is very reliable. Definitely make a reservation. It's one of my family's favorites. Maybe test it out before you decide on it, though.

Orso is rather nice and pricey. I have only been there on an expense account though.

I'd like to ad my vote for Bar Americain. If you go and it's on the menu, the pumpkin soup is amazing!

Per Se is expensive, and one of the top ten. Becco is good too, but it is on the inexpensive side.

Masa is the most expensive one (around $300-500....)

WOW I guess I underestimated the possibilities of prices in NY restaurants...I guess I meant something more reasonable than those. I love Becco- I've been there at least two or three times.
Does anyone know about Patsy's?
And I know this isn't very expensive, but how about Joe Allen?

There's a restaurant across from The Majestic... on the corner of 44th and 8th.

I'm drawing a blank on the name (maybe someone can shed some light), but I've eaten there twice and quite liked it. Just a suggestion...

Robert Emmet's? I like it there, good food, nice atmosphere, and at the right time, you can get the place to yourself. Moderate prices, nothing expensive.

Wishing, I think you might mean Angus? If so, I have eaten there and I loved it, but I was looking for somewhere I haven't been yet.

Sounds like I have one restaurant- Joe Allen.
For the other, what on restaurant row is good besides Becco? I love it on that street.

The Palm is my favorite.
Its located on 50th, basically diagonally across from Wicked towards 8th.

Del Frisco is also good. Its on (I think) 47th and its closer to Radio City.
Right across from that is City Lobster, which is also excellent.

Ben Benson's is up at 53rd (again, I think).

All the places above are equally excellent, and definitely expensive.

I had a marvelous birthday dinner at Craftsteak on 15th St. and 10th Ave. Great raw bar, and wonderful steaks.

I'm liking this Robert Emmett's place.
My family is (unfortunately) extremely picky, and the only thing we can all seem to agree on is American and Italian. We all especially love Italian. Any Italian restaurants that you guys know of?
