Anyone else remember this series? It's now available on DVD (and Netflix instant viewing!). My kids adored these shows, which featured BIG names such as Susan Sarandon, Liza Minnelli, Matthew Broderick, Mick Jagger, Robin Williams, Vanessa Redgrave, and many, many more.

Oh, yes. These videos were a big part of my childhood. The show was on, I think, HBO and we didn't have cable when I was little. But the local video store had many of these videos for rent and my dad would bring them home occasionally. I think I appreciated them more than my brothers. That store closed and they were gone from my conscious for a bit but then another video store opened and they had the videos as well. So, I started renting them for my sister and she grew to love them. The entire set came out on DVD this past fall and she got it for Christmas. The DVD set comes with this really nice book detailing each episode and it even comes with a really nice set of playing cards.
I have Sleeping Beauty on dvd. I used to LOVE them, too. Same story, a little local video store had them and my mom would let me pick one out. Some I watched over and over.
I bought Cinderella on video from eBay about ten years ago. I was fullfilling my goal to own as many versions of Cinderella as possible lol
I have the entire series!!!!!!
However, when I bought it they were only available 1 on a disc, not multiple episodes on a disc!
My favorite is Sleeping Beauty and Rumpasdhfklasfjlsdjafklsdjaf kal...however you spell it!!!!!!!!
Right now, my kids are watching Cinderella, starring: Jennifer Beals, Matthew Broderick, Eve Arden, Jean Stapleton, and Edie McClurg.
Rumpelstiltskin!
I loved THE LITTLE MERMAID, and CINDERELLA cracked me up, especially (spoiler alert) when the stepsisters were turned into bunnies in the end. One time I watched SNOW WHITE at my grandmother's and she hated it! She said, "If you're gonna watch SNOW WHITE, watch the real thing." So she rented the Disney movie for me.
I LOVED these and was so excited to find them on Netflix. My favorite was Goldilocks and the Three Bears starring Tatum O'Neal and John Lithgow.

How can anyone hate Vincent Price as the magic mirror?
Terrific series with some incredible talent - nice to know people still watch and discover these gems.
Count me in. My family rented these from the library when we were kids. I love the early 80's video effects. LOL
favs are Little Mermaid, Frog Prince, Cinderella, Aladdin, Princess and the Pea(LIZA!!), and The Dancing Princesses
Aw, these zero budgeted shows were gems. I particularly liked "The Nightingale" with Mick Jagger, Barbara Hershey, a bizarro performance by Bud Cort, and brief appearances by Jerry Hall and Angelica Huston as faeries.
"The Little Mermaid" is a nice reminder as to how the actual story is as opposed to the happy-ending Disney version. And where else are you going to see Pam Dawber, Treat Williams, and Dame Helen Mirren in the same project?
Going along with the Faerie Tale Theatre train of thought - has anyone seen Shirley Temple's Storybook series?
It's, essentially, the same thing. Shirley hosts and stars in television versions of various fairy tales and classic novels. Some of the episodes are available on DVD and are, actually, pretty enjoyable.

aah i love this show... i have the original DVD set... but i want the new one that includes the Tall tale series...
i remember renting this show on Beta.. yes BETA!! haha... i remember that they only offered five or six of them on Beta format.. so when we got VHS i was so excited to rent the rest of the series! hahaha...
I watched them when I was young at my grandparents. My cousins and I recently rediscovered them, and the little mistakes and innuendos are absolutely priceless. The raunchy aspects of Rapunzel totally escaped me when I was 6.
Tim Burton directed the ALADDIN in this set. It's as trippy as all-get-out.
I honestly believe these videos (which i watched on a loop for a year as a toddler) seriously f*cked me up a little bit (or a LOTTA bit). In a good way. I think.
I fear going back and watching them now on DVD for fear of something akin to an acid flashback.
P
YES!!!
I used to watch these all the time when I was younger. Thanks for posting.

You ever see The Nutcracker Fantasy, P? That screwed me up royally.
The Rag Man
loved them!
YES. Hansel and Gretel and The Nightingale were my faves.
I had no idea they had come to DVD. Excellent news!
I, too, loved them. I could only get them on video when the local video store had them. The Dancing Princesses was one of my favorites, as was the Frog Prince. *Off to add them to my Netflix queue.*
Rapunzel was a classic though. Gena Rowlands. She made that Witch role phenomenal. Little Mermaid was good. It gave you a different take on the Sea Witch character.
Loved them! The Dancing Princesses was definitely my favorite!
My grandma rented these for me and my sisters. I haven't seen them in so long.
