They didn't do pre-screening for critics. Good sign!
I am going tomorrow night! I am VERY excited.
I'm excited, too.
Borstal...can you explain WHY that's a good thing? (Not being snarky, just trying to understand.)
It's not. I was being snarky. And there has been some critical reaction, just later than usual:

I'm so excited for this! I was a huge Stephen King junkie in high school and read the book when I was about 16 and of course saw the original film. Plus, the school scenes were filmed 3 blocks from where I live (in Toronto) and I walked/jogged/drove past the set every day in the summer of 2012 so it's been a long time coming!

The most important narrative of the last half of the 20th century can never be retold enough.
Not looking too hot on Rotten Tomatoes... The last movie AND the last remake I saw was the new godawful Romeo and Juliet, so it can't be worse than that.

"Director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) has replicated the De Palma film scene for scene, but also drained every drop of camp humor and crazed craftsmanship, as one might remove the blood from a sow."
This sounds like a no-brainier after the huge success of the Van Sant Psycho! I smell a franchise.
Can't they just remake the real masterpiece...The Rage: Carrie 2!
I was excited to see this until I read that's it's basically a scene for scene rehash of the DePalma film. What's the point? I thought this version was going to be more true to the original novel. I was curious if Kimberly Peirce could bring anything new to the material but it sounds like she didn't even try.
The reviews seem to be very middling, its not bad, pretty good, not awful etc, so not an embarrassment but not amazing, i dont think any expected anything more right? It seems that its a competent remake, but not an adventurous one which is shame considering the talent involved. Oddly enough though a lot of the major critics (not blog critics etc) seem to like it, i thought they would rip it apart
most horror movies don't have a critics showing

Nom Nom Nom
Someone's review of CARRIE, Sex and the City Style:
"While Samantha was getting finger-banged in the back seat of Billy's Camaro, Charlotte was at the soda fountain convincing Tommy to ask me to the prom. Meanwhile, Miranda was down at the hog farm draining pig's blood into steel buckets. It made me wonder--what good is being able to move objects with your mind, if you can't move another person with your heart?"
I saw the remake this morning, and rather than being it awful I just felt it was stupid. What was the point? It's not shot for shot, but stays faithful enough to the original film. All of the interesting camera work is gone (the thrilling rotating shot at the prom) and the final moments SUCK.
Julianne Moore is decent, but isn't given a ton of stuff to work with. Like the MCC revival, this film really tries to de-camp the material and that only makes things boring and instead of scarier.
Chloe Grace Moretz is miscast if only that she's way too pretty for the part, and a little too spunky and sure of herself as well. By the time she's dolled up for the prom she's a knockout and way prettier than any of the other girls, especially Chris.
The CGI distracts rather than enhances; adding a CGI blood when the bucket goes wasn't smart.
The pacing is swift and I never got bored. I went out of curiosity to see how bad it could be, and if that's your only motivation I'd say skip it.
I saw it last night. I absolutely loved it. Juliane Moore was truly terrifying and psychotic. I loved Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie as well. The demonic looks in her eyes when she was wreaking havoc on the town were something else. I thought the iconic scene with the pig's blood was very well done, **slight spoiler** and the video of the shower scene showing on the screens at the prom made it even more disturbing.**end spoiler**
The last five seconds of the film pissed me off though. The whole film was devoid of any camp (which was fine with me), but they broke that in the last five seconds.
Was this the last five seconds?
How is the swearing, violence and sexual content? Was thinking of taking my son to his first rated R movie...
Very minimal swearing and sexual content. There's a decent amount of violence, but it's not too scary.
Another big misstep with the remake is that they turned Carrie into a cross between Iron Man and a witch from The Vampire Diaries. She doesn't have super human strength and she doesn't have Thor's hammer. She has telekinesis (which should be enough!).
When Carrie loses control she should ACTUALLY have no control over her powers. She is supposed to be destroying everything in her path without a thought for who she's hurting or what she's dismantling. In the remake she is very much in control and exacting calculated vengeance on her enemies. I think the change is misguided.
Clyde, the last five seconds is SPOILER***********************
Not the hand coming out of the ground!!! It's Sue putting on a flower near Carrie's tombstone. Someone has spray painted, "Carrie White burns in Hell" on the stone and a crack begins to splinter up the tombstone before the credits roll.
END SPOILER*****************************
The last 5 seconds also has the most out of place music.
