This got a glowing review from Kevin Smith and Roeper this week and, when it stars the excellent and somewhat underrated Ryan Gosling who is on his way to Phillip Seymour Hoffman/Jeffrey Wright territory, I am not sure how they can be wrong.

What's a "terriroty"?
I agree Gosling is an underappreciated actor but I hope that he will eventually be discovered by the masses.

I apologize. The offending letters have been taken out and shot. And then reassembled.

Well, The Notebook raised his profile considerably. But I doubt most of the fans of his that jumped on board with that film haven't even heard of The Believer.
I love Ryan Gosling. He was my first celebrity crush from way back in the days of Young Hercules. I think I was 12? wow...
Young Hercules. That show was my life! Wow.
I just heard the Smith and Roeper review. They could not have been more positive. Will have to look out for this one.
Does anyone else remember tiny Ryan Gosling on MMC? His voice wasn't half bad back then. I think he's a great actor, who goes under a lot of people's radar. Love him.

Add me to the list of people who can't wait to see this. Just read about it in Entertainment Weekly at the doctor's office, and it sounds rather interesting!

Cruel Sandwich- I was also thinking about The Believer. I was really impressed by his acting. It was the first thing I saw him in after MMC. I believe the first shot of him in the movie is a close up of his arms while he's lifting weights. I remember thinking "THAT'S the scrawny Ryan from the mickey mouse club?!?" I fell in love at that moment. That movie left me thinking for days, as any good movie should.
And it's amusing that I came across this thread just now because I'm watching The Notebook at this very moment.
I can't wait to see Half Nelson!
This looks incredible. Can't wait to see it.
I really wanted to see this for Anthony Mackie.
I saw "the US of Leland" last night on showtime and found myself amazed that he (ryan) could do more than "the notebook". let's face facts the the notebook was the story and not the acting. but he continues to blow me away.
Ryan's my favorite young actor, without a doubt. I've been trying to sell him on anyone who'll listen! It's too bad that most people just know him from The Notebook. If The Believer had been released theatrically, I'm convinced he would've gotten an Oscar nod for it (maybe even won that year?). He was also the best part ofr Murder By Numbers.
I read the Times review and I really want to see this, but I don't think I can bring myself to pay $11 for a movie, and it's not playing anywhere that I can use my movie passes. Hopefully it'll make it to a bigger cinema in the coming weeks, since it seems to have gotten good reviews.
gosling was hot in notebook ... especially down at the fishing hole.

As good as Gosling was in The Believer, the true Best Actor performance of 2001 (Although it would have never ever been nominated so it wasn't a disappointment when it didn't pan out) was John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig.
I saw this movie as part of a festival 3 weeks ago. Excellent. I think he might just get a Oscar nod. And the girl is a huge discovery.
This looks incredible! If anybody sees this please post reviews!
I remember him from Remember the Titans. He wasn't big in it, but he was one of my favorites in that movie!
I saw this movie this afternoon. Ryan Gosling certainly did a wonderful job in it, and it's a fascinating story that, as reviewers have mentioned, doesn't go at all in the direction we're used to with this kind of set up. The young girl who is the other protagonist has a wonderful quality of stillness that contrasts nicely with Gosling's fidgetiness. I have a few issues with what I feel is a lack of economy in the editing. I think the story could have been told more gracefully and efficiently, but that's my only quibble. It's a true independent film, miles away from Hollywood conventions.

John Cameron Mitchell was fabulous, but I'd have given the nomination and win to Gosling. That performace was unbelievable! Because of the storyline, though, it's a film I couldn't stomach watching again. But Ryan left a huge impression on me.
I can't wait to see Half Nelson.

As great as Gosling was, I think that would be Tom Wilkinson for In the Bedroom.

Broadway86, Tom Wilkinson (and Sissy Spacek) were great. But I hated that movie. It was like watching frigging paint dry.
Understandable. The movie did drag for some people. I loved it, but I was more impressed with Wilkinson and Tomei than I was with Spacek.
