AMERICAN PSYCHO.
Bret Easton Ellis' novel which indicts Yuppie-ism during the 1980s made into a uptown slasher movie--and at the end, the whole story may have been just been day-dreamed by the hero?

The Harry Potter films. Don't need to get into it, as obviously many people don't agree, but I just got none of the magic that I felt with the books - so to speak.
The Scarlet Letter
Demi Moore + changed ending = 'nuff said....
A Home at The End of the World....one of the few times I could NOT separate the two...minor and insignificant changes for no good reason as well as MAJOR changes in plot lines and characters that really left the film too empty....

Cookie - I screamed out loud in the movie theater when I saw that - made quite a disturbance, actually
Scary Movie 2. The novel was mind-blowing, simultaneously heartwarming, tearjerking, and humourous. I'm not sure the film lived up.
My favorite book of all time is "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" by John Irving. The film version was so awful that he had his name removed from the project and made them change the title - if anyone saw "Simon Birch" you know what I'm talking about - truly crappy, unfortunately, because the book is amazing.

The first and second episodes of Star Wars. I do admit that I'm a geek that way, but I thoroughly enjoyed the novels. But when Lucas' movies came out...well...you know what happened...
I don't loathe the Harry Potter films, but I agree that the books are a gazillion times better.
I am mixed on Series of Unfortunate Events. There are some things that the film "got wrong", but there are some things that the film improved from the books (which while adoring them, they are much flawed). I thought Jim Carrey was great.
Striptease...
Carl Hiaasen writes scathingly brilliant satiric novels about South Florida...the movie had none of his intelligence or humor...it was just plain awful
You may laugh... "Interview with the Vampire"... the movie didn't capture A THING about the book. Totally missed it.
I completely agree with Cookie about The Scarlet Letter. The Movie was a complete joke. Why change the ending? WHY?
I had completely forgotten about the "Simon Birch"/"Prayer for Owen Meaney" thing. I totally agree. Amazing book, weird and stupid movie.
Dean Koontz's book "Phantom" is a genuinely scary and original novel, mixing in some nice sci-fi ideas into a straight-forward horror pitch.
The movie is utter crap.
(Yes, Affleck was the Bomb in 'Phantoms' but STILL ... )
Any and every movie adaptation of "Les Miserables"
I'm sure there are a lot of people who won't agree with me, but I really disliked "The Hours" as a movie. It just confused me and I don't think they did a very good job of integrating the three plotlines. Plus, Nicole Kidman's fake nose distracted me to no end. I read the book later and I loved it.

Does a television mini-series count? Because what the SciFi channel did to A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan should be a punishable legal offense. Mutilation of defenseless literature or something like that.

Practical Magic is one of my favourite books, but the movie was not very good!

I agree with Interview with the Vampire...oh, and Queen of the Damned. The first, being sooooo just messed up, was awful. Neither one of them had the correct character for my beloved Lestat and Louis, then Townsend was another bad Lestat. But! the scene with Alliyah and Stewart in the hot tub was just...hot.
Girl With A Pearl Earring. I can't believe just how wrong they got it and for NO reason. There was NO need to change anything in the book, which is one of the most beautiful I have read in years. Shame.
i admit- a walk to remember! i liked the book and the movie, i just cringed! Also practical magic was an awesome book and don't get me started on how much i hated the movie!
popcultureboy, i literally sobbed through "Girl With a Pearl Earring." in the movie theater. it was just SO wrong, even Colin Firth could not redeem it. *sigh*
i refuse to see any movies of fantasy books because i just know they'll ruin them. i also won't look at any pictures or even hear them. i'm such a purist when it comes to fantasy books!
The Princess Diaries...because the movie was almost NOTHING like the books, but enough like them to irritate me...
Don't shoot, please.
all of the tom clancy novel to movie adaptations since the hunt for red october which was a brilliant adaptation that captured the feel of the book magnificently and sported a wonderful ensemble cast.
sleepers. yeah, i know, brad and jason, but still...blech.
jp, glad you managed to keep that clear.
The Scarlett Letter (1995) w/ Demi Moore - Oh. My. God. What in the name of all that is holy were they thinking?
Dreamcatcher (2003) - Stephen King's novel is a powerful and frightening science-fiction/action/horror/thriller. The film is crap.
A Home at the End of the World (2004) - I didn't hate it, but they did cut a lot of really important stuff. Colin Farrel and Sissy Spacek gave beautiful performances, though.
White Oleander (2002) - Once again, didn't hate it, but a good portion of crucial plot points were deleted. Outstanding cast. Michelle Pfeiffer should have gotten an Oscar nod. This novel would have worked very well as an HBO miniseries.
