Usually the ones who scream racism at the drop of a hat are the biggest racists of them all. A good example is the good Rev Al Sharpton who sees a racist under every rock.
Amazing that an incident that happened after the Trayvon Martin verdict got zero coverage in the media. Outside of East St Louis, a young white kid was walking along minding his business. A group of African American teens set on him, doused him with gasoline and set him on fire - burning him alive. They were chanting "This is for Trayvon". Was that a hate crime? Why did the main stream media give it no coverage? Why did Rev Al ignore it? Maybe it did not matter to him.
Think about that the next time you want to say racist. Both sides are guilty and not everyone is one. I know Carlos you will now answer this and call me one but I do not care.

But all Obama did was watch a movie...there is no "both sides are guilty" in *this* situation.
Exactly right
My problem with the President is he is worried about every other fringe issue but is dangerously avoiding the one problem confronting the world. I could care less re his skin color or what movie he screens. I just look at him as a weak president- not black or white.
"Both sides are guilty..."
I didn't realize we were on opposing sides...
And since Roxy likes referencing a case that got "zero coverage," I guess linking to it would disprove the zero? So, here is one of the pieces of coverage that didn't exist, in which is described as a hate crime: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/05/teenagers-set-boy-on-fire_n_1320993.html
Also the "group" was two.
Here's probably why this case hasn't become a bigger story. No one can figure out just what the story is yet, or if it is true: http://opnateye.com/?p=384

"My problem with the President is he is ... dangerously avoiding the one problem confronting the world."
Which is?
I bet it's Muslims!
I can think of so many problems confronting the world, I was kind of happy to know we had gotten the list down to one.
It's a great movie. He should screen it. It's relevant to today but also timelessly great. Oyelowo was great in it, and everyone should do themselves a favor and watch it.
I just received a screener so I will be watching it again tonight.
Not with Al Sharpton or @Gothampc
Aw. This reminds me of Thanksgiving. The turkey and stuffing, the fire roaring, the drunk racist Uncle...
Tune in next week when Goth argues that racism is why there's an American national holiday celebrating the protagonist of Selma but not that of any other of this year's nominees.
When in doubt, play the race card.
Selma was nominated for Picture. It was not nominated for Best Actor but neither was thought to be shoo in Ralph Fiennes or other notable snubs. Same with director. Sniper was not nominated for Eastwood as director but was for Best picture. It cuts both ways. Why not just give the award outright without any other nominees so that we can be truly fair and inclusive. No reason why they should go thru the indignity of running against 4 other actors. Whether their performance was the best is of no consequence. Say no to fair competition. This is the most important subject facing the world today.
"Say no to fair competition. This is the most important subject facing the world today."
BULLSH*T...if voting is involved the outcome is selective. That is why I prefer sport to any award show.
To Javero
I was being facetious when I said no competition. I was trying to show how ridiculous and petty this whole BS has become.
To MrRoxy
I figured as much after posting. My bad. This thread is somewhat divisive.
"Say no to fair competition. This is the most important subject facing the world today."
So, when Roxy said Obama was dangerously avoiding the one problem confronting the whole world, I would never have thought it was fair competition in movie awards selections processes...
Somewhat?
Most BWW threads , especially in off topic, are that way.
I think Obama should host a White House screening of Taken 3. If he refuses, he is showing he is clearly not tough enough on terrorism. Think I'll start a petition.
If the walls had ears.....
To add to the stupidity on the whole Oscar mess comes this gem from a paragon of racial fairness Spike Lee
Because Selma did not get more nominations he said, and I quote, "I guess we are not free at last". Hey why not have some street demonstrations over this.
The defense rests.
I would hate to be judged a racist based on the movies I see. If I was judged by the things I saw this year, I would probably be judged gay.
There is way to much name calling today and far too little reason and tolerance toward others. MLK and his followers were far more victimized than anyone on this board, yet he they had far greater patience and tolerance in his fight.
The Oscars are political. Everyone knows that. Many people nominated hire publicists to help their cause. I'm sure that if we learned that Redmayne was diagnosed with cancer, he would win. I find the show very informative. When you look at the nominations and winners, you can tell which way the wind is blowing in Hollywood.

Finally, the voice of reason
To those on the board who want to silence those they do not agree with, I have one thing to say
" Je Suis Charlie"
After seeing the movie just a few hours ago, it really is a shame it didn't receive more recognition from awards groups, especially the Oscar. The entire cast is wonderful, it's beautifully shot, and it really does feel remarkably (and sadly) relevant to today. I tend to hate that phrase, and I rolled my eyes a few times reading that in reviews, but watching the scenes of the failed protest, it's impossible not to think of the recent protests, especially those in Ferguson. Relevance aside though, it's just a damn good movie, and much better than some of the other Oscar contenders for this year (looking at you, Birdman). Fortunately, the theater seemed very full, and I hope this film continues to do well, because it's very much worth seeing.
It vilified a President that actually helped the cause. So the film sucks cause it can't get that part of history right. And therefore a bunch of fools will think that President Johnson was like that when he wasn't.
"Who ever said a non-white/straight person getting overlooked automatically is an example of prejudice? That's not the argument anyone is making, and you damn well know it. This conversation is larger than just Selma- it is a sad state of affairs when all 20 actors nominated for an Academy Award this year are white actors. This isn't because people of color are doing lesser work, but it's that their work is consistently overlooked and thus can get no traction like other major players in Hollywood can. Selma was one of the best reviewed movies of the year and got mostly ignored, and a jingoistic and poorly reviewed film like American Sniper gets showered with praise because it's Eastwood, who by virtue of being a white straight man, has so much more opportunity than anyone involved with Selma with the exception of Oprah Winfrey."
Uh, do you know how long it's been since last there was an all "white" nominated list as this year? A really, freakin' long time ago. Much ado about NOTHING.
I ignored this film and WILL NOT SEE IT cause of the crappy trailer (not to mention the lie about President Johnson) that used a stupid song. So apparently they were only looking for specific people to see this film about MLK Jr. How...quaint.
And American Sniper isn't poorly reviewed. Maybe you mean by comparison, but considering more people are seeing and reviewing American Sniper than Selma. This isn't the fault of the color of the film's actors, but the fault of the director and the people involved.
