Just curious, what didn't you like about The Paradise JLZ?
Love Poirot on sick days and John Mulaney's special on Netflix makes me shake with laughter every time I watch it.
I'm sure your coworker knows you better, but you asked! Sarah Lanchashire is always worth watching, but this is not one of her best roles.
Nah, I was only joking. I'm going to give it a whirl.
Fantod, have you seen "Poldark"?
No I haven't. Is it on Netflix? If so, I'll give it a look.
Fantod, it's been a while since I watched it - the more I think about it, the more I remember the things I did like. I did actually enjoy it, but not enough to watch season 2. It was axed after that, I believe.
P.S. A brand new 8-part Poldark series starts in the UK soon, starring the rather fetching Aidan Turner (of Hobbit fame) in the title role, just in case you didn't know. Might be interesting.
I didn't know that, Jay. It makes me a little bit nervous since I think the original two-series run is television perfection.
Fantod, it was on Netflix for a while, but it looks like it's not there anymore, sadly. It's not on Amazon Prime, either. Keep an eye out, if you can remember to check.
Breaking Bad. Am on season 5, episode 3
I just started watching Parenthood a few days ago and finished the second season last night. No idea why it took me so long, what a wonderful series.
I watched the first episode of “The Paradise” last night, and I wasn’t exactly riveted. The leading actors ranged from strong (Elaine Cassidy, Sarah Lancashire) to fine (Joanna Vanderham) to serviceable (Emun Elliott), and it felt padded and slow. It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t compelled to keep watching. I’ll give it 2 or 3 more episodes, though, to see if my opinion changes.
Following that, I switched over to “Peaky Blinders,” which I’ve been hearing positive talk about for a long time now. I watched the first two episodes, and they were terrific. Cillian Murphy and (especially) Sam Neill are magnificent.
It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t compelled to keep watching.
Told ya.
Sorry you didn't like it, growl.
I watched Christopher and His Kind, which is a movie adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's life story with Matt Smith. I thought it was really really good and it was interesting to see what is essentially Cabaret but told through more realistic eyes. Acting quality was great and it was surprisingly cinematic for a BBC docu-drama.
Also shamefully marathoner through the first season of Queer as Folk over the weekend, which I both hated and loved for different reasons. Though they somehow manage to muck up every gay issue by making it melodramatic and ridiculous, and every character was an archetype, I still somehow found myself really caring about the characters. Also gives you a look at how far the views of gay people have changed over the past 15 years.
I love Christopher And His Kind! It made me have funny feelings for Matt Smith. Douglas Booth too.
Not Netflix, but if you have an Amazon Prime, The prior two seasons of The Americans is now available. FX is notoriously stingy with their hit shows, so looking forward to finally seeing this one. Unfortunately, no Fargo.
Rewatching Orange is the New Black. And trying to figure out if Orange is the New Musical is a real thing!!
The "Spartacus" series has returned to Netflix streaming...I've been binging (and drooling).
I watched the first two seasons of Queer as Folk when a former roommate had them on DVD- I was never able to proceed because I had a sex dream about Gale Harold.
I know Im late to party with the Office but Michael Scott just left the show and I honestly want to cry. The show won't be the same without him. Is it even worth going on with the series?
Just watched The Naked Gun. Hysterical!
You should all do yourselves a favor this weekend, and start watching "Grand Hotel".
Seriously, if you only ever pay attention to one thing I post, let this be it.
A Spanish-language mystery drama, it tells the story of a luxury hotel for the elite in Spain in the early 1900s, run by a wealthy family with a super-fun super-bitch as matriarch. It starts off as a young man takes a job as a waiter to secretly investigate the mysterious disappearance of his sister who worked there - he uncovers all sorts of secrets, and falls in love with the daughter of the owner along the way, and so much more besides.
Full of murder, mystery, humor, romance - it moves at such a great pace, and is ridiculously entertaining. All the things "The Paradise" is not. I love it. Just watch. You'll be hooked, so set aside a good chunk of your life.
Any other fans?
For a second I thought you were talking about the German movie masterpiece and I was very confused. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll start it tonight.
I'm currently watching the second season of THE FALL.
Then I'll start Gran Hotel. I too was very confused, but sounds intriguing.
Dumb question. Is it Spanish with English subtitles? I could look it up, but I thought I'd keep the conversation going.
Yeah, in Spanish with English subtitles. Don't let that put you off, though.
Okay. I just got addicted to Miss Fisher and her murder mysteries.
Totally addicted.
