I think that Scottsboro boys is now the show that fared the worse on tony night (losing 12 awards). I was worried about Book of Mormon performing 'I Believe' but I loved it. I think it was one of the best tonys in a while.
For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.
So many highlights in that show, and even the WTF moments (MacDormand, Shields) were fun. A lot of were skeptical of NPH hosting again, but he was terrific from start to finish. Well done.
Anyone else think the BOM song was eerily similar to the song 'I Believe' from Altar Boyz???

Neil Patrick Harris will win another Emmy for hosting this show. He's the perfect awards show host, and IMO there is no one better at it right now (although Hugh is close).
He has terrific writers, but he's also great on-the-fly. When Brooke Shields completely flubbed her bit in the opening (which was hilarious), he looked into the camera calmly and said, "That was totally improvised, folks!" Then he helped the other participants by counting off their intros before they started singing (by the way, I blame that recurring mishap on poor orchestration. There was no indication in the vamp of a steady downbeat in 4/4 time. NOT a good thing. There should have been some clear musical indication, and there wasn't.)
He's unflappable. If everything goes smoothly, he's funny and charming. If everything goes wrong, he's funny and charming. What more could you want in a live TV host of a major event? The only reason I give him an edge over Hugh Jackman, is that Hugh can sometimes look slightly uncomfortable or awkward when there's a mishap. He ALWAYS quickly recovers, though. But NPH never misses a beat. He plays right through, no matter what.
I rank him right up there with Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, and Billy Crystal. And of the current crop of rotating hosts, there is no one better.

Hosts don't win awards individually anymore for hosting award shows - I think when Hugh Jackman won for hosting, it was the last year or the year before the last year. Now I believe the host can only win an Emmy if the show is nominated and wins - the host is grouped in with everyone else.
>>The TV academy just acknowledged a mistake made by the Tony Awards that was brought to its attention by Gold Derby and gave Neil Patrick Harris one more Emmy nomination -- for hosting the Tonys last year.
Harris' name was missing from the list of Emmy nominees in the race for best special-class program when bids were unveiled last month. Hosts of award shows used to compete in the old Emmy category of best performance in a variety special (Hugh Jackman won for hosting the Tonys in 2005), but that contest was eliminated last year. Award-show hosts are now grouped with the producers of the kudocasts. If the award show wins best special-class program, then the host wins along with its producers.<<
I agree best12bars.Best for years. I said it on another thread but they really need to get rid of that woman who does the voiceovers. She is appalling. Dull. She sounds like she is back announcing tracks on a easy listening FM station.
"I think that Scottsboro Boys is now the show that fared the worse on Tony night."
Stop saying that! Lots of shows don't even get that many nominations! Women on The Verge and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson certainly didn't do as well as Scottsboro Boys.
Madbrian - having not heard any of BOM being in the UK and waiting for the Tonys, having watched it this morning, I was too stuck on the "I have confidence" pastiche to notice anything else! I'll have to have another listen!
Sounds like it was a good show - just wish it was shown over here somewhere...
Patti's "Fvck off, there is no way I'm going to win this" face when the camera panned over her. Donna Murphy's little sign, which came across as a "I know I'm not going to win but thanks anyways." Angela Lansbury clapping along with the underpriveliged kids during the Memphis number. And did anyone else think Frances Mcdormand seemed ill?
I just want to say that I feel blessed to have seen this show. I woke up inspired by all the work and love that these performers put into it. I feel lucky to get these performances on TV once a year. It brings me closer to the community that I can't wait to be a part of. Congrats to all the nominees and winners.
"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. Its when you know you're licked before you even begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."
I thought the show was strong and NPH can host it every year for all I care because he's terrific.
What worked: 1. NPH. Enough said on him. 2. Hugh Jackman and NPH. This was great. Would love to see them duel host an awards show. 3. Bono and the Edge. I give them a lot of credit for being good sports about the debacle that is Spiderman. 4. Muscial numbers for the Tony noms. I really enjoyed them although I would like to have seen a different number from Anything Goes since they perform that for EVERYTHING.
What didn't show well: 1. Frances McDormand. Someone should tell her that next time she should dress appropriately and maybe put a comb through her hair....horrible. 2. Spiderman Performance. Boring, uninspired, and officially took the show off my list when I hit NYC in August. 3. Memphis and Company. The company # didn't come off well. I'm not sure why Memphis was even performed. I would rather see a show on tour or another show on Broadway right now than that show. 4. Broadway moments. Unnecessary. If you need some filler, show more clips of the plays nominated for Tony's since they don't perform.
Just watched it all on YouTube and thought it was fantastic - so much better than last year, especially performance wise. Book of Mormon, Anything Goes and How to Succeed were all knock outs!
Loved the tongue work by Andrew Rannells in his song. And for my money, he was better than Norbert Leo Butz in his performance, there was so much detail in Andrew's. But, living in London, I haven't seen either show so cannot really judge!
I had been routing for Laura Benanti, but was pleased for Nikki M James - an emotional speech I thought. And very pleased that Sutton won! Updated On: 6/13/11 at 11:27 AM

Terrific Tony Show last night. Neil Patrick Harris is a consumate pro and should host every year. Great production numbers. Although the duet from Spiderman was rather weak, after after all the barbs and jokes would think producers would want to dazzle a bit more.
I enjoyed the duet of NPH and Hugh Jackman but, I'm not a fan of Jackman, I find him too brash and overbearing.
Frances McDormand looked like a lunatic. It was as if she'd been dozing backstage and they woke her up to accept the award.
Also, I thought Mark Rylance sounded like an idiot. His poem delivery was almost disrespectful to the millions of actors and actresses out there that dream of accepting a Tony. One of the best parts of any awards show is to watch the one or two great acceptance speeches, his was moronic and rather a waste.
All in all the best Tony or awards show in a long time.
I fast-forwarded through the Spiderman ballad and a couple of the speeches--and would have liked to have seen filmed clips of the plays--but it was thoroughly enjoyable otherwise. Ellen Barkin's speech was incredibly moving and her win was of the highlights of the evening for me. Loved the numbers from The Book of Mormon and Catch Me if You Can. NPH and Jackman were terrific.
The only low moment was Mantello not going home with a Tony. His performance in The Normal Heart will stay with me for the rest of my life.
NO one can compare to Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, or Billy Crystal. Neil Patrick Harris does a good job and I think Sean Hayes did so great last year too.
Neil Patrick Harris is NO Bob Hope or Johnny Carson or Billy Crystal.
There are some others that have done spectacular jobs in hosting and that also goes for the Oscars, Emmy's, Grammy's among other award programs, to date. The history of hosts for major award programs is varied.
Be open minded and expand your history to see that there were many others more talented and experienced in hosting award programs, in historical context.
