Wasn't aware Babs and Andrews had not done (enough) theater. I think what the original poster meant that Sutton is the best all-around leading lady Broadway has ever seen. Instead of doing a Merman impersonation (who was 26) she studied Hutton and Stanwyck. Of course there are those on this ..... board (I won't say "stupid") who thought that her casting was quite a step-down in quality from Reba and Catherine Zeta. Funny thing is Sutton can play Olive Oil in Popeye the Musical so I won't call you "Stupid." I'll just call you a War Horse's Ass. AND Sutton can KILL as Reno Sweeney.

When you consider everything Norbert went through with this show, what with his sister being murdered and how the cast and creators of the show were there for him, I don't think his speech was sanctimonious at at all.

That was one of the better Tony shows in recent years. Liked both the opening and closing numbers. Props to NPH. Still wish they would give us scenes from the nominated plays (like they used to) instead of, oh, say, a reprise of Memphis.

outside of the opening, Company, Spiderman & Priscilla; I enjoyed the show. but no more NPH as host.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

WORST TONY AWARDS EVER!!!!!!!!!!! AND I'VE BEEN WATCHING THEM SINCE 1964. At least they had the guts to give some of the awards to something besides BOM. For once, I agree with Chris Rock -- it was like taking a hooker out to dinner. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every year everyone always says it was the "worst Tony Awards ever".
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Entertaining and fast paced, one of the best Awards shows ( including the Globes and Oscars) in several years. Props to the producers and NPH for keeping it moving. Special kudos to Lin-Manuel Miranda's closing rap which NPH nailed perfectly.

Too bad Chris Rock doesn't know anything about musicals. He would be a killer host. The "I remember the first musical I saw like it was yesterday - because it WAS yesterday" bit was great.

Chris Rock was totally unfunny-- until the hooker joke.

even though a lot of it was predictable, it was still VERY enjoyable and a HUGE step up from last year! LOVED it this year!

I thought it was a good show. I enjoyed the performances, especially Catch Me, Book of Mormon, Anything Goes, and How to Succeed. :)

I thought this was one of the best Tony ceremonies in recent memory. They didn't try too hard (save for the dumb duet between Harris and Jackman).
And jv92, I wanted Laura Benanti to win as much as the next guy, but let up on Nikki M. James. She's a really young girl who is living her dream. She has said in several interviews that this has always been her goal in life since she was a little girl and that she couldn't believe she was even nominated. Yes, the Tony may be a piece of plastic on a piece of wood, but it's the recognition that got to her. I'd be emotional too if I were in her position. No need to be so cynical.

I enjoyed them, despite the awards being predictable. The opening started off okay for me, but then it got a bit awkward, in my opinion.
I want to know what the drug of choice was tonight. There were too many awkward speeches. Brooke Shields and Frances McDormand come to mind. Sutton Foster was fine too, until the ending. It was just strange at times.

What was McDormand wearing and why was she getting so angry as she left the stage?

She wasn't angry she was beyond happy. I loved seeing her as she left that stage.

Oh, she looked angry to me. But if she was happy, good for her. She's a good actress.

It was one of those inTernal "F*CK YES, I did it!" moments for her I think.

I'll echo everyone else who's saying this was one of the best Tony Awards in recent years. Every performance (save for Spider-Man, and even that wasn't a total disaster) was well-done, and overall it was totally enjoyable. Loved Larry Kramer's speech, Nikki James' excitement at winning, and Trey Parker's shout-out to Joseph Smith.
Also, Frances McDormand's jean jacket. Yes.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I liked it. I forced myself to not go on this board during the awards, because some people here are just buzzkills.
My thoughts:
Liked the opening.
Yay Nikki. I was shocked that Laura didn't win, but Nikki was so sweet. Reminded me of Karen Olivo's win.
I still wish Rory O'Malley and Andrew Rannells won in their respective categories.
Loved the performances except for Memphis. Chad Kimball's voice just sounds worse especially with Montego Glover on the same stage.
Loved the Hugh Jackman & NPH duet so much. Please bring back Hugh as the host.
I'm gonna catch a lot of flak for saying this, but the Scottsboro Boys' performance didn't live up to my expectations. It was good, but people here have been raving about the music. My expectations were probably too high. I'm gonna give it a listen soon. At least it wasn't an Alice Ripley-type speech.
Frances McDormand, why are you so angry? I think she might be upset Good People didn't get more nominations or something.
Yay Sutton. Canavale is an upgrade from Borle, in my opinion.
I though NPH's rap had Lin-Manuel Miranda written all over it. I'm glad people here confirmed that it was actually Lin who wrote it.
Great show. Great season for Broadway.

Listen to Scottsboro. I'm surprised you didn't like the train number. The middle section or release has a gorgeous melody.

I really did think it was a good show this year. Especially compared to last year.

I loved most of the performances. Priscilla's seemed very boring. The opening was great. I liked Spider-Man's performance more than I thought I would. I was so surprised when Nikki won over Laura but I love them both so much.
