2026 Tony Awards Performance Predictions (or What Songs They Should and Will Perform) — Page 2

I think what's more important is that the director is up to the task of shooting these production numbers in a way that fully honors and captures the performers onstage while also enhancing the energy and excitement that each show brings."
Amen to that. The filming has gotten increasingly bad at the Tonys. The show had a better look in the 90s that it does today for most production numbers and I blame a lot of that on directing/filming of the awards broadcast.

I would love if we could somehow get Maya Rudolph as Mary Todd Lincoln. I'd even settle for some new footage of her performance as they introduce her.

Sutton Ross said: "Also re the 7 minute opening, Bryce is doing a take over of The Wing IG account today and teased a secret involvement at the Tony awards where he had a rehearsal today and I saw one ensemble member post a pic on their IG stories outside Radio City today so we may get a tiny bit of Chess."
I love everything about that. I love Bryce and his character in Chess, and I love that they've featured his songs on a few talk shows. Such an excellent performer."
From the announcement of those appearing today its not just Bryce but also Lea, Nik and Hannah and at least some of the Chess ensemble. I'm particularly pleased the ensemble get a chance to perform at the Tonys, in whatever form it takes in the opening as I know these moments are special to them.

They deserve to perform considering the best part of Chess is the score. Thanks for the info!

The Tonys were also held in Broadway theatres for many years - so when they upscaled to Radio City, now the have a massive space to fill and, for some shows last year (Dead Outlaw and Real Women Have Curves in particular), they got done dirty with those acoustics

Not to mention, from my understanding and correct me if I'm wrong but they used to re-build of the sets exclusively for Radio City...so it felt like you were actually getting a brief glimpse into the broadway show, however in recent years it feels like they've been going for nothing short of a screen backdrop in place of the set...i'm assuming it's for cost effective reasons but for most people it just comes off as inexcusably lazy

Re, shows doing medleys as their performance number --- it's such a great concept on paper, but IMO ends up being really, really tough to pull off. My favorite + most successful from my view was the new production of Once on this Island, both in how they weaved the numbers together narratively + had that very nifty re-creation of the Circle staging. (Nathan Lane declining that goat will live forever rent-free in my mind. Also.)
Anyone else have any favorites?
(I'm quite hopeful/optimistic that Jellicle Ball can pull it off this year....!)

Doing numbers previous shows has never stopped them from performing the same numbers at the Tonys"
Of course, just look at Parade, they both performed “This is Not Over Yet,” (same with the original production although they also performed “Old Red Hills of Home&rdquo
The Who’s Tommy revival performed Pinball Wizard (as did the original production which was part of a megamix) and literally all 3 Broadway productions of Cabaret performing “Wilkommen”.
With all that in mind, I see no reason why this revival Ragtime won’t follow suit by performing the prologue just as the original 1998 production did

On another note, I've heard the Tony opening number already, which will be an apt, slightly self-deprecating tone-setter. P&P obviously know P!nk's vocal range and strengths very well and they maximize it to her advantage. It's no "Bigger," IMO, but be on the lookout for actors from the nominated musicals hitting the RCMH stage, plus many others.
It's been nice to hear P&P branch out of their bread and butter a bit for some of their recent screen work, but this song is very much "them." I hope they come back to NY soon.

Ugh. Pasek & Paul? Great - I’m not looking forward to radio-ready, pop-lite musical theatre.
Granted, I should have expected it considering P&P have a pre-existing relationship with Pink and her daughter from the Greatest Showman cover album

Damn, I was really hoping for Shaiman. Otherwise it's just gonna be some anthemic, repetitive thing.

I mean I think their songs are generally quite good—there’s a reason why so many have hit—not all of them are the most interesting narratively but for a Tony opening it doesn’t need to be

I hope Pink sings all that jazz, her voice would be great for it.
