I’m shocked the estates didn’t lock up the rights. I guess there definitively must be no plans for a first-class production surrounding the 50th anniversary.
The initial excitement on social media seems to quickly turning as folks realize that this is not a first class professional production.
Which is beyond dumbfounding considering the rumors going around for a good year that there would be a short engagement returning, probably Off-Broadway. The one night only performance at the Shubert will likely be for BCEFA or another organization. One performance will likely have tickets prices sky high though.

It’s a non-equity production"
A production using the Showcase Code is not anEquity production. It’s not a contract, it’s essentially just a waiver that allows Equity members in NYC to do very small-scale productions without benefit of a full contract."
"In keeping with the musical’s spirit and sense of discovery, this 50th anniversary revival will feature an all non-union cast" https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/A-CHORUS-LINE-Site-Specific-Revival-is-Coming-to-The-Loft-New-York-in-September-20250605
Why would it be Showcase Code if they aren't auditioning Equity members?
So Cassie stopped two shows cold, but couldn’t get her Equity card? Interesting take on the character.

Stage managers are also equity members.
The production’s size and performance number align perfectly with the Code, whether intentional or not.
Ah, did not know stage managers were also Equity. Thanks.

That’s how they’re choosing to celebrate this iconic production? Feels pretty underwhelming.

I'd be very curious to hear if the ACL estate approved this production.

It's getting blasted on IG by a lot of Broadway actors.

Too bad. This quickly went from a must-see to no thanks.

This is what I was referring to with “official” and “unofficial” in my initial reply. Apparently, the estate is pissed off at this production. It’s also strange that they didn’t lock licensing rights, too.

She gave it up.
Patti's impact.
So it's non union and immersive? So, basically a nightmare for everyone in the building. Yikes.

I feel like the "immersion" will be... sitting in a rehearsal studio.

For a show that doesn’t take place in a rehearsal studio.

If the estate didn't approve it, they have the ability to shut it down before auditions even begin.

Directed by an exceptionally early career director with no notable credits who is also the producer.
They potentially shot themselves in the foot majorly by presenting this production this way.

Man, this news is so deflating. Was looking forward to an epic revival worthy of this iconic material. Instead, we get a fart in an elevator. Bummer.
It could - for reasons that defy the logic of the original intention of the show - end up actually being a decent, small-scale production that happens to be running in the city. Not everything in NYC needs to be a high budget production; although the director listing his first credit as [title of show] at Under St. Mark’s makes me want to be like “Ooh, baby, keep that one to yourself.” But that’s not the point.
Pushing it as some kind of 50th anniversary production leaves a bad taste in my mouth, ultimately, and others as well. The non-union part is the cherry on top. Particularly if we actually are getting some one-night or limited-run production with bigger name performers sometime soon.
I believe all 9 original female actresses are still alive. Sadly, most of the men on the line, plus Robert Lupone and Clive, are no longer with us.
The real surprise here is that the rights were not secured to prevent something like this from happening. When I was in college for theatre in the city in the 00s, there were at least two separate instances of our mainstage programming being affected by rights being acquired by producers- and in one of those instances, nothing even came of one of those shows. And this was for academic productions that ran less than a week and in no way could be seen as competition.
If the estate is upset, it's kind of on them for not locking this down.

My understanding is that it's customary for the rights holders to have approval over any production in New York City, amateur or professional. If that's the case with Concord + A Chorus Line, then they agreed to this.

Pam Blair would beg to differ...

In my dotage, I'm trying to be more positive (hahahahahahahahaha), but is it possible that the concept is to actually set this at the original tape sessions that led to the creation of A Chorus Line? I mean...that could be potentially interesting? I don't think the structure of the book would allow for this to be presented smoothly, but at the very least, i could understand the impetus. Unless I'm giving everyone too much credit. Which is a distinct possibility (probability?).
