OK I HATE THIS!!! I went to see Rent yesterday and a lady started to sing "Tango Maureen" I was like SHUT UP! Drew Lachey was pretty good by the way. Anyways, It also happened twice when I saw Wicked. And when I saw Grease years ago and the list goes on!
CAN SOMEONE MAKE THEM STOP!!!

When I saw "Hello, Dolly" at Hoftra college, these old people sung through the WHOLE show. BTW they can't even sing very well...
Finally my mother stood up and told them to shut up.
They didn't hear her..damn those old people
I concur. When I saw RENT in NYC a few months ago, people in the front row were doing the table dance from La Vie Boheme. Okay, you're RENTheads. You know all the words. You know all the choreography. I get it. Now shut up, keep your hands to yourself and be quiet!
This happened to me at the final show of AIDA. I was soooooo mad. I paid the big bucks to hear the people onstage sing, NOT YOU!

I sing along at the opera. Mainly with the coloratura sopranos.
People seem to like it.
It annoys me so much when people sing during the shows! I want to smack them sometimes! I forget what show I saw, but the people behind me sang through the WHOLE FREAKING SHOW! I told them countless times to shut up, but they wouldn't. So, someone else complained to an usher, and then they finally quieted down.
yeah, i did Grease and the people not only sing in their seats, but they hand jive as well....oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, Born to Hand Jive, oh yeah!

I thought someone was singing along at Wicked too, but it really is just the sound. It's happened twice to me, and it always sounds the same. I'm pretty sure it is just how the sound is thrown.
Why would someone actually sing along with Tango Maureen? They should have cut that crap during previews.
We did Chicago back in 1993 at our theatre and when Roxie calls Fred a SOB during All That Jazz this little old lady repeated what she said. "She just called him a son of a bi@#" it was sooooooooooo loud! I almost broke character but I kept it together...

I loved in the movie "Connie and Carla" how they showed folks who sing-along in those scenes with the Russian mob henchman checking out all the shows looking for the two women.
By the end the guy was merrily singing along, too!
But, on the other hand, it IS distracting. Some folks can't seem to help themselves...others seem to fancy that they are as good--or better--than the performer. Aaaargh!

People in the FRONT ROW were dancing?! Aaaauuuggghhh. People are inconsiderate morons.
beacon, that's EXACTLY what I thought of! That Russian guy was HILARIOUS.
Might be a RENT trend, or annoying teenage trend as I am sure it had started at Wicked now(I say now because it wasn't as huge last january when I went). But when I went to see RENT on tour about 3 years ago there was this large, annoying teen in front of me who was singing and dancing, yes dancing, along. About 15 minutes in, or less, I had to ask him to knock it off to the quiet applause of the people around me.

At my friends closing night in Chicago, I sat in front of a guy and his wife who sang along with all the songs. I finally turned around to the guy at intermission and asked him to stop. He actually asked me WHY. *blinks* I was thinking "you've got to be kidding me?" I said "That's my friend up on the stage... I didn't pay for a ticket to come see her and listen to you sing. Please stop."
They got the hint and stopped after that, but then got annoyed when I stood at the curtain call. *sigh* I don't get people lol
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
"then got annoyed when I stood at the curtain call."
Standing at curtain call? Who would do such a terrible thing?!? [/sarcasm]
I hope you punched him in the face.
Hilda, Hilda, wake up! I've invented a maneuver.

This has gotta be really annoying. Never really experienced it though.

My mother's best line when people around us sang along with the shows we were seeing: "I paid to hear the people onstage sing, not you." She always delivered this line with a strong but sweet tone of voice and nasty glare that usually worked.

Two of my friends were singing a song at a talent show, and my other friend next to me was singing along, but it seemed as if she was singing loudly so she could show off that she knew the words. I wanted to smack her in the face.
It happened to me at TLK (ive said this story a lot). I was going crazy, but i survived.

That has never happened to me at a Broadway show. I have experienced it in regional, community and high school theater. And it is not pleasurable in any capacity.
I think it would be cool if they had a RENT benefit performance where people could go and sing along. I think a lot of people would go, and hopefully that would stop people from being annoying during the regular performances.

I, too, admit to singing along during TWHM. However, I limit my vocalizing to the encore of the "Dolly!" number because I think everyone in the thteater wants to join in at that point anyhow.
(I have been told that I mouth every lyric and line of dialogue throught the show, though!)
I was shocked when my very own sister started to sing along with Hugh Jackman last week during The Boy From Oz. I don't think she realized she was doing it and I elbowed her. She was so different than her normally sedate self.
