completely agree but they never seem to learn their lesson
they just hope their show wont be the one to fall victim
and in this case it backfired severely
the danger of the risk is obvious and predictable to the common folk
but most producers arent smart
theyre just cheap

I feel like this many cancellations happening to a show this big could impact practices going forward..."
It should, but I feel like it won’t. Producers will think “that could never happen to us.”

I imagine the producers carry some sort of insurance to cover these types of circumstances.
This could also warrant shows to no longer open just prior to the holidays if Gypsy had opened a few weeks earlier, the understudies would have (likely) had a few rehearsals in already.
I don't know enough about theatrical insurance to give a helpful answer, but I do know it got much more expensive and complicated post-COVID. "Star Insurance" is a thing (see also: the SHUFFLE saga), but I don't know the breadth of that coverage for this specific production. Like anything involving insurance, it will involve months of jumping through hoops to get the money.
I still remain surprised that there aren't 2-3 covers per role (even if they aren't yet ready to go on). We literally just got through COVID where sometimes even that wasn't enough for a show.

Everything in the theatre is all about scheduling. It's rare that anyone gets the exact schedule they want. Wolfe & Audra's availability probably dictated this.
I think the worst type of schedule is the WEST SIDE STORY (2019-20) and HONEYMOON IN VEGAS situation, where a show is still in previews during the holidays.

All the best to whoever is playing Rose, as there’ll be adrenaline flowing whether it’s Audra post-illness or Tryphena playing it for the first time. Looking forward to reports either way!
Gonna assume that u/s board is going to be loaded.
Word is Audra is on today per the box office.

The matinee is basically sold out, so that's good news for them. I assume most folks are back to good health.

Nope- they just posted both performances are canceled today- shows will resume tomorrow.
Both shows today (12/28) cancelled.
Allegedly resuming performances tomorrow (12/29).

Both performances cancelled today, with a message that the show will resume tomorrow.
Their announcement specifically says performances resume tomorrow so…we’ll see.

That’s a LOT of people who went into/are on their way into the city for the matinee and paid to be able to do so. Yikes.

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt with 2 hours notice a few days ago. 65 minutes is too close.

Inexcusable. They need to give much more notice. It was on this morning, now it’s off. New sickness ? It or is it more unprepared understudies?
Cancelling an hour prior to curtain is so amateur especially since the box office was telling people earlier that Audra would be on today.

Just another example of why Box Office employees should never have to be tasked with serving as unofficial spokespeople for a production. It's not their job to know who's on.
Their union should crack down on this to remove them from that equation.

I’m sure she thought she could sing today, and was intending to sing today, but maybe she felt something go back a step or two and has realized she can’t sing it.
But yes absolutely an amateur and inexcusable situation and everyone likely feels really embarrassed about it.

I mean, yes, and no. Really, if someone had asked this morning, they could have just said they didn't have any information that the full cast wouldn't be on.

I mean, there's no reason at all to think that. We have no idea what the situation is.
People stoping buying rush or whatever tickets until the new year oye.
