Any possibility that Audra is ill and they don't feel it's financially wise to put her cover on?
I hope everyone is alright but this is just insane.

It could be that Joy is sick as well. Yesterday she posted a pic of soup in her stories. It is possib;e that her understudy is not ready yet.

Absolutely. They should just start again next year when everyone is well because this is ridiculous.

At this point, I think they've lost more money cancelling five performances then letting her standby go on instead. Some people would have stayed. The word going around is there are a lot of cast, including some understudies, that are still sick.
This is…insane?? Unless the standby is sick I don’t see why this continues to happen.

A nightmare all the way around. Again, not enough performers or they didn’t divvy up the covers properly. Either way, looks like a ~$1M loss this week so far. Sad, as this is the most lucrative week of the year. Feel bad for the cast, crew and the investors. I don’t recall this level of cancellations in the past. what’s different here?

Joy's understudy has already been on.

I feel like Heather is too big a star to be a standby.

One upside is we get to read all the (sometimes irrational) speculation here which is pretty entertaining at times and costs far less than the cheapest Gypsy seat.

Yet I'd be far more agreeable to paying Broadway prices for a staged reading whereRenée Elise Goldsberry is playing Rose andRichard Kind is playingHerbie.
Maybecovers doing fully blocked shows doesn't have to be the only contingency plan for flu season. The audience who want to opt out of seeing a staged reading would still get their full refund."
A show did something along those linesa year or two ago if I remember... I forget which one though"
You may be thinking of Doubt where Amy Ryan performed with a teleprompter for a bit after she stepped in for Tyne Daly
Yeah just cancel all reminding performances till next year …don’t lead the tourists and the Audra fans on

I'd LOVE to see Heather Headley in this. Wish she was Audra's Donna Murphy
The production has known since Monday that they would likely be cancelling all these performances. It’s terrible customer service to waste thousands of people’s time waiting to hear about a performance that isn’t happening.

If they've been doing put-ins, I'm going to say they didn't at all believe they would be canceling the entire week.

Productions should find a way to rehearse everyone from day one, even if it means an extra week of rehearsal on the calendar. Yes it would cost a bit more, but it would cost way less than this.
Yes, they had a put-in yesterday afternoon. Not sure if they're rehearsing today or not.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner- but there are so many kids in the cast- and kid germs are particularly virulent. I’m sure that’s making a bad situation worse.
God, this is brutal, and, as others have pointed out, happening at the worst possible time. A lose-lose for everyone involved. Is it standard practice for understudies and stand-bys not to rehearse before the opening? Seems like something like this would have happened by now if so...

Yes. Standard practice. Scroll up in the thread for some more talk about this and the limited number of understudies being credited for each role. It happens sometimes but usually not on THIS level. Always a bit of luck involved. Some shows are also a lot simpler to throw in someone who hasn’t had a proper put-in.

I hate to be that guy, but do we know the timeline for how long it should take Audra et al to recover. I know that nobody can read the future, but if those familiar with the current cold/flu/virus which is going around could chime in, that would be appreciated.
At this point, they should cancel the remaining performances for the weekend. Canceling now allows not only the company to recover, but also gives ticket holders the chance to maybe seek out other shows before they sell out. Demand is high this week and options are growing more limited by the minute.
Give ticket holders the opportunity to secure their refund/exchange, then find another show to see without having to scramble within two hours to figure out how they're going to be entertained that evening. I'm sure other productions will happily take the now show-less audiences off their hands.
