Also a friendly reminder that social media managers don't make these calls. The incredibly rude and angry comments regarding these cancelations is very intense and misguided.

Well here is the CDC influenza map and timeline. I was popping through threads this morning and saw someone post that they have co-workers who have been out for weeks with something that appears to be more than just the regular cold or flu. The poster didn't seem to live in NY as they mentioned traveling to the city. But this flu seems to have hit and spread between December 14th and the 21st. It is high in a lot of states.

I still have to wear a mask on public transport in the theatre (any anywhere indoors) because of my long COVID, but boy am I relieved to have missed this one. Lots of folks are really sick.

Sad, as this is the most lucrative week of the year. Feel bad for the cast, crew and the investors. I don’t recall this level of cancellations in the past. what’s different here?"

lol
no show ever hires enough coverage
producers are too cheap and push the limits of luck

I don’t know if it were mentioned here or somewhere else- but Audra has Crohn’s, and if she takes immunosuppressants for the condition, that will prolong things.
Whatever it is that’s going around, it appears to linger for a couple of weeks.

the standbys only responsibility is to be ready to go on for the major role they are assigned to cover
they are present at every rehearsal and should be absorbing everything said by the director and choreographer and musical director
they should know all of the dialogue lyrics and music
at the put in they get the chance to run through the entire show themselves with all of the technical elements including costume changes
after a put in the industry standard expectation is that you are ready to go on that same night if needed
unless someone with firsthand knowledge can tell us otherwise it is only speculation that Typhoid wasnt prepared enough to have a successful put in
another possibility is if many people in the cast are ill there may have been an attempt to also try out split tracking at the put in for the ensemble and minor leads
if the split tracking was too severe it may have led to safety issues or logistical impossibilities discovered during the put in
a lot of ppl on here dont know how showbiz really works but whomever made this observation is correct
they most likely would not have had a put in if they didnt intend to have a show that night and the late cancellation announcement gives credence to the failed put in theory
I'm pretty sure the issue is that the standbys and understudies are also sick.

I’m Hearing …Tryphena was not ready to do the show and they rehearsed her along with the u/s for a couple of other roles and ran the show this afternoon! It’s not just Audra 4 others really sick and u/s’s sick or not ready and scrambling for covers. . I hear Typhoid could go on tomorrow as it’s doubtful Audra will vocally be able to do it! We shall see?

Hoping it was an autocorrect error. The name of the standby for Rose is Tryphena Wade.

If Typhoid is running throughout the cast, then that explains the illness going around the theater. 😂

I was going to ask the same thing.
Was watching Japanese news today and they are reporting a big uptick in influenza throughout all prefectures and Europe seems to be going through it a bit also. It's not just here in the U.S. it seems. It is that time of year but it seems it is hitting harder than usual.

Yea Tryphena
Mezzodiva47 called her typhoid and I saw that and inadvertently wrote

ELF had a ton of understudies and swings on this past weekend.
I have tickets through audience rewards for Sunday’s performance. Anyone know if Audience rewards will give me a refund or exchange if Audra is out but the show goes on w/ an understudy?
I have tickets for the matinee tomorrow. Assuming it does go on as scheduled, I'm really in it to see only if Audra is performing. While I do support understudies, often seeing performance specifically to see understudies, Audra is Audra.

ppl on here have no clue how things werk so here goes
unlike standbys understudies are already in the show as an ensemble member or as a less major lead or maybe even a swing
the point is they already have their hands completely full with keeping up with their primary track and all of the changes and challenges that come with putting up a show both during studio rehearsals and then tech
its barely enough to be able to stay afloat without focusing on being the backup player and there is usually zero time allotted for rehearsing understudies
thats because there is never enough time to rehearse even the first stringers and this often bleeds over into the preview period
these days producers use the preview period to continue getting the show on its feet via daytime rehearsals because all they see is money being flushed down the toilet for every day that a show isnt taking in $$$ by having performances
this is also why broadway shows get barely 3 weeks of dedicated studio rehearsal time when it used to be longer although some of that is now pushed into previous workshop / lab land where everyone is paid pennies
and yes preview periods are used to gauge audience reactions and then consequently adjust the show but as many have observed by that point major changes arent often made because it would cost $$$$
once in a while an overachiever is able to pick up one of their understudy assignments by osmosis or really stepping up and using every crevice of free time to learn it on their own but remember there has to be wigs and costumes and such made for them and those departments are already under the gun to produce what is needed for the first stringers
simply put there is never enough time or money to make this fantasy scenario happen of a brand new production being able to throw on 4-5 understudies if there are that many people out sick
as I have said in a previous post producers dont want to spend the extra time and money to insure against a cancellation early on under these circumstances
as far as the standby I also explained in a previous post why there should be less sympathy assuming that lack of preparation was the issue

May 2025 bring you the gift of humility.
They cancelled yesterday's performance early enough so just maybe they perform today? The 2pm matinee is still on as of now.
It’s a real shame that after a triumphant opening and going into what should be one of the most lucrative weeks of the year, this production instead lost a week of performances and likely instilled a lot of uncertainty into ticketbuyers.
Producers really need to start changing their practices regarding coverage.

I feel like this many cancellations happening to a show this big could impact practices going forward...
