Exactly. Whether they were told by the production to inform buyers that Audra would be on today, or whether they heard that through the grapevine and chose to communicate it on their own, they must stop communicating that information to people who show up at the box office.

I recall there were issues with box office employees communicating this stuff at MERRILY too with Lindsay's absences.

they also sold rush tickets to both shows this morning. maybe there was some hope they could perform today, but then a few other cast members became ill this morning?

Clearly the appropriate governing bodies, unions, etc., are going to need to step in and set some standards. This mess affects all of Broadway.

I’m guessing that somebody failed their COVID test last minute. No Broadway show should have only one understudy per role nowadays. So dumb. For example, I assumed Brittney Johnson was covering Louise or June. Nope. She’s just ensemble. Huh?!?

If everything is so minute-to-minute with this production, I’m curious how they’re so certain they can resume tomorrow.

They can’t be certain. Just cancel now and resume for a new week on Tuesday.  Gives the cast and crew more time to get better. And also not make audiences crazy with this “on again, off again” mess. No?

They have been doing that the entire week because people keep attacking the social media managers. They also delete the canceled performance posts within 6 hours of posting them.

65 minutes before showtime? F*ck that. People won't be buying more tickets anytime soon.

the show has 8 swings, which is a good amount. i wouldn't expect more swings added anytime soon outside of vacation swings down the road.

  • Tryphena(standby) is the only cover for Rose.
  • Natalie Wachen(standby) is the only cover for Tessie Tura, Electra & Miss Mazeppa.
  • Ken Robinson(swing) is the only cover for Georgie, Kringelein, Pop, & Uncle Jocko.
  • Joe Osheroff(swing) is the only cover for Andrew Kober's roles and Weber/Pastey/Phil.
  • Cole Newburg(swing) is the only cover for Tulsa.
  • Sasha Hutchings(swing) is the only cover for June.
  • Hunter Capellan(ensemble) is the only cover for the 3 Newsboys.
  • Shanel Bailey(swing) is the only cover for Louise.
  • The roles of Herbie, Baby Louise, Angie, Yonkers & Little Rock have two covers.

Yes. People are sick of this and don't want to be on pins and needles waiting. Especially tourists who came here specifically to see this. What a colossal mess.

Well, Tuesday is NYE so nothing can happen that night. The earliest they would resume is Wednesday, and I’m sure the producers are trying to salvage at least part of the holiday income. But this was handled remarkably poorly. I feel for the cast.

I agree, Jordan. Either their management has no idea what they are doing (which I don't think is the case), or people must just still be dropping like flies and every time they think they've got covers worked out, someone else drops. So hopefully whomever they've got in terms of a cast who can pull off the show for tomorrow hangs in there.  I also have to wonder if their issue isn't just cast illness, but also with illness in the crew?

As someone who can only make it to the city a couple of times per year, I really feel for everyone who has had tickets to the canceled shows as well as the cast and crew who are either sick themselves or also dealing with the "we're on, nope "we're canceled" of it all too.  I hope they really are able to get themselves back up and running tomorrow.

To be honest, I’d be nervous if I had a ticket for a few weeks from now.

Well, I'll be. That bird really did it.

I feel bad for the cast. I understand as audience remembers we are entitled to a full refund for a performance cancellation.

question: even though a performance is cancelled, will the cast, backstage crew, orchestra, and front of house folks still be paid? Given how they cancelled 65 mins before showtime I’m sure some members of the cast and theater employees already reported to work.

the box office was selling tickets for both of today's performances up until 12:30. People that got rush tickets this morning were told by box office staff that Audra was on today. Maybe they should have not sold tickets today and cancelled earlier instead of nearly an hour before curtain.

It's honestly ridiculous for them to really be trying to push these performers onto stage at the second they won't drop dead after the first 20 minutes. Like if you want them to be on stage for new years you actually have to give the space to improve and have the axe hanging over their heads of "Tonight's Performance" isn't helpful.

No one will ever be able to convince me the producers handled this week correctly. I feel so bad for the thousands of audience members who had their Christmas week ruined because they didn’t cancel these performances on Monday when they KNEW this was by far the likeliest outcome.

Unless most of the cast had COVID, there's zero proof they knew they would have to cancel the week on Monday.

Does the cast have up until half hour to call out? Maybe that’s where to start- not sure what the cut off should be, but is 2 hours unreasonable?

This is why I never bothered getting new tix for The Roommate after they canceled less than 15 minutes before curtain and people were already seated.

Just to recap, their last performance was Sunday 12/22 and then all performances were cancelled until tomorrow, correct?

Correct. I was at that final 12/22 performance and consider myself incredibly lucky. I feel bad for the hundreds of my fellow holiday visitors that missed out. Had I bought a ticket for one day later, my entire trip would have been dampened. (We did have cancelled performances of Big Gay Jamboree and Titanique, one of which was due to cast illnesses.)

Has any other Broadway show cancelled an entire week of performances like this? Even in the first post-Covid season, I don’t recall a production going dark for an entire week.
