Som let's assume that Fiddler now breaks box office records (surpasses the records BKLYN set) and runs for a few more years.
Are there any decent Teveyas left out there? Obviously we have to have a name in the role since New York law requires that.
I'm having a hard time coming up with some names. Assuming they don't go in the Burt Reynolds/Brooke Shields mode, who are the replacements?
Richard Dryfuss (yes..we all know the problems), Brian Denehey, George Hamilton (a tanned Teveya)?
Bernadette Peters as Tevye
(If she can play Rose, and Harvey can play Tevye, anything is possible)
Nathan Lane as Tevye
Steve Martin as Tevye
Bruce Vilanch as Tevye (He can grow his beard back)
Hello?...JACKIE MASON!
I can see it now. "A fiddler on the roof, sounds too Jewish, no?...But, it's up to you."

I don't want to see Nathan Lane or Bruce Vilanch in anything; but I'll take a Tony Shaloub or Tom Wopat or James Naughton or Kelsey Grammer.
How about Gavin Creel in the scantily clad version of Fiddler? A guy can dream, can't he?
How about gender switching?
All the females played by males, and males by females?
Then you can have Patti LuPone play Tevye and
Mandy Patinkin play Golda with
Harvey as Yenta and
Matthew Broderick, Mark Kudish, and Jeffrey Kuhn as the daughters.
Kristin Chenowith can be Motel.
I actually think Nathan Lane would be a great Tevye - and we all know he can do what Zero has done just as well...
How about an all male version in a world where gay marriage is permitted?
As for gender switching...a while ago Zero and Harvey did the "Do You Love Me?" duet - Zero as Tevye, of course!

Iwish - funny, when I went to see fiddler again with harvey, we named the last three on your list.
We decided Jason was too short, Kelsey was too "intellectual" sounding, and Nathan would be great.
P.S. Can we please change the title to tevyE
Mandy Patinkin, Nathan Lane, Brian Dennehy (could be interesting, if he can sing?) Kelsey Grammer, and I would LOVE to see Brad Oscar do the role.
I'm sure there are plenty of great actors out there who could pull it off. Didn't people doubt Alfred Molina when he was announced, and Harvey as well? You just never know.
Jackie Mason and Mandy would be great ideas. Steve Martin..hmmm..interesting and I wouldn't be suprised if he pulled it off.
Kelsey...too white bread. I think it would be an upper class Tevye.
Would love to see Kaye Ballard as Golde.

Mandy Patinkin would be great. Jason Alexander would be great - even better than he was doing Tevye in JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY when he was in his 20's (and won a Tony)!
It's obvious that Michael McKeen and Bruce Vilanch are next in line. I've said this in other threads...
How about Hasselhoff after Harvey leaves ?

Stunning that no one has yet mentioned Rob Bartlett. Funny and touching. A perfect choice for Tevye.
Patinkin as Tevye? **Shudders**
ROb Bartlett DID do a good Tevye in LSOH...
Well, since "The Woman in White" is suspected to be entering the Minskoff in November, Fiddler only has until about September to finish its run off, but I definitely vote for Rob Bartlett!
After seeing his Women in White pics, I think Michael Crawford would be a perfect Teveyea
I think the perfect Tevye is playing the role on Broadway at the moment. Jason Alexander is someone I wouln't pay a dime to see do anything - he is horrifying.
