25 or so years ago, there was an off-Broadway production of FIDDLER starring Jackie Mason as Tevye. However, for some reason (and you may all speculate amongst yourselves, I'm not telling), he was not able to learn his lines, and the show never opened.
Brent Carver was a PHENOMENAL Tevye in a production put on by the Stratford Festival a few years back; the Toronto Star gave the production 5 stars. It was interesting and a different take on the character, because Carver is quite slim -- proving that you don't need a rotund actor to play the role.
I always wondered why Tevye had to be cast with a rotund actor - if he toils away at pulling that wagon behind him all day every day of the year - he'd be a thin, perhaps muscular man. I love Harvey in the Role though - just the best casting I can think of in recent past.
I don't know what should I reply this, as a joke or seriously.
OK, I reply it seriously cause there is too much joke about it.
Brian Stokes Mitchell will be a brilliant Tevye. His rich baritone will sound gorgeous for if I were a rich man.

Tevye certainly does not have to be "rotund". In fact, the original choice for the role was Danny Kaye. His wife/manager Sylvia Fine turned down the offer without him ever knowing about it. "He'd NEVER play the father of three grown daughters!".
Of course, seven years later he played 600 year old Noah in TWO BY TWO, with three grown sons.

BSM as Tevye??? Um, that voice is too Baritone and trained. Love BSM, but he's not loose enough to be Tevye.
Paul Sorvino is about to play it regionally. You could probably cast half the "Sopranos" boys in the role.

Burt Reynolds and Brook Shields would make an great pairing.
I don't know if anyone has suggested him, but as I sit here and listen to Ragtime, I realize how amazing Peter Freidman would be as Tevye.
What do you guy think?
I'm still going with Brad Oscar. That man should be allowed to do/play anything.
Peter Friedman! What a great idea.
His Ragtime role was very Fiddler like.
Feodor: There you go. You'd rather see Kelsey Grammar do Tevye? Kelsey who couldn't remember his lines when he did Shakespeare to save his life.
Kelsey who was practically booed off the stage?
Remind me never to go to the theater with you.
Hal Linden would be an awesome Tevye. Let's get this man back starring on Broadway, and make the world a better place.
He is a Tony winning Broadway musical star, is very proud of his work as a leader of the "Jewish world,(he is currently the spokesman for the Jewish National Fund of America)" is a wonderful singer and actor and musician and has more energy than most 30 year olds.
HAL LINDEN FOR TEVYE!!!! Truly, he would be amazing.

At 73, can Linden or would Linden do 8 shows a week? I know he's doing "Pirates of Penzance" for New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, but that's a much more limited run.
Peter Friedman! Yes!
And I think Jason Alexander would be WONDERFUL.
Theodore Bikel did a year's tour of Fiddler just a couple of years ago...He received rave reviews and was, I believe, 78 at the time.
Yes, Hal Linden is in amazing shape. And his wife Frances looks pretty good too.
HAL LINDEN for Tevye!
theaterboy beat me to this but hell...
Hal Linden!! Excellent
