Anyone know if we can expect any more Sondheim revivals in NYC in the next year or two? I'm getting a bit sad thinking the latest hype/wave of Sondheim will come to a close soon? I recognise many probably feel like they've had enough Sondheim for a while, but I can never get enough.
Even while he was alive, NYC rarely went long without a major production of his work. I suspect that we’ll see another in the next two seasons. We’re certainly due for a Forum revival, considering two productions were at least in the works last decade and then neither came to pass. I would imagine something like Saturday Night might be reexamined now by an off Broadway company, or Anyone Can Whistle. A first class Night Music is a perennial wish. We’ve remarkably not seen Gypsy in almost two decades, as well.
The top tier Sondheim shows all have been revived recently, so it seems unlikely we’ll be seeing them again so soon.
I agree, we rarely go a long period without a major production of his shows, but I do remember finding the stretch of Follies (closing in early 2012) to the Sunday revival in 2017 surprisingly long for Broadway. During this period, we did have major Off-Broadway revivals of Passion and Into The Woods.
I haven’t been hearing good things about the Menier Chocolate Factory production of Pacific Overtures, so I don’t think that’s playing NY in some capacity.
I could see Ambassador producing a big, expensive, star-studded Forum revival in the near future, starting in London and coming to Broadway.
I know Josh Gad said in an recent interview that, before the pandemic, Alex Timbers was trying to get him to come back to Broadway to do “Forum”, but that went kaput and is part of how Gad and Rannells came together with Timbers to do Gutenberg!

I relish the next deluxe Follies revival with Kelli O'Hara as Sally (I can't think of anyone who was more BORN to play this role) and Laura Benanti as Phyllis directed by Bartlett Sher. It simply MUST happen.
As for Night Music - the list of Desirees at the moment, something has to happen soon... - Kate Winslet, Olivia Colman, Cate Blanchett, someone...
a return, limited engagement of the Gyllenhaal/Ashford SUNDAY remains at the top of my Vision Board

I know Forum is still on Timbers wishlist probably not with Gad at this point but I know James Corden was rumored as well

If not spectacular, Pacific Overtures is a very sweet and touchy production.
I don't think we will see another majjor staging of FOLLIES in London anytime soon. The RNT production ticked that box. Of course, it would be wonderful if Lincoln Center produced a production. In fact, I'd say that's something that eventually they likely will do.

The Menier production was very good, it had a nice, easy concept and some good performances. But it is the stupid rewrite that excises Chrysanthemum Tea.
Can Olivia Colman sing? Love to see her in Passion.
Forum is the only one that makes sense as the others have all been done pretty recently.
Is there a reason Lincoln Center doesn’t really touch Sondheim?
I have a totally deluded pipe dream that Gaga will do Passion one day.

Please no more Pacific Overtures without Chrysanthemum Tea

I think that Follies could take advantage of that stage a lot more effectively than ALNM. It would be nice to see a great production of Follies, unlike the bad version 20 plus years ago at the Belasco, and the mediocre, cheap looking one that played the Marquis.
Top of my wish list is an afro-centric Follies with Audra McDonald as Sally, Norm Lewis as Ben, Renee Elise Goldsbury as Phyllis and Wayne Brady as Buddy.

Gypsy is due a revival, which was last done in 2008, which is a long time by Gypsy standards.
It Was rumored that the London Production with Imelda Staunton was coming over. Merrily We Roll Along took years to come over. So never say never.
I fancy a brand new production of Gypsy though, maybe with Hannah Waddingham, Audra Mcdonald or Lea Michelle.
I've always wanted to see a gorgeous ALNM staged at the Vivian Beaumont much like the brilliant Serban staging of The Cherry Orchard that was staged there back in the 1970's. It has never had a full-size revival on Bway since the original.
But please oh please keep revivals of GYPSY or FOLLIES in proscenium houses where they most properly belong.
A Waddingham GYPSY is a brilliant idea. She's made quite a name for herself now, and she genuinely has the talent for the role.

I am not the biggest Gaga fan. Like some of her music, but I would be at the first preview to see her in "Passion". I think she would be perfect in it.
I know why people go for Audra as Sally but she'd be a more interesting Phyllis. Also a Fosca I'd die to see.
I've said this before but an Anika Noni Rose/Diana Ross ALNM lives in my head rent free.
What about Cynthia Erivo or Danielle Brooks or Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Rose in GYPSY?
None of the "usual suspects" who get brought up for a Gypsy revival excite me...Audra, Sutton, SJB, Idina, etc. Or wait a few more years and let Gaga do it as a film.
I'd travel to see Bonnie Milligan play her regionally.

I'm kind of surprised Lincoln Center doesn't do Sondheim much. Shows like A Little Night Music and Pacific Overtures seem like good firs for the Beaumont
I send out into the universe that the rumored Cate Blanchett-lead NIGHT MUSIC comes to fruition.
