Truth be told, I made myself nervous for a second. I simultaneously posted the Tribune pan here and the Backstage rave in the Normal Heart thread, and for a second I thought I had switched them. Things are the way they should be, though, lol.
Well, the reviews are coming in just as expected. The show, save for some musical numbers, was a piece of ****, and will most likely be reviewed as such.
Nobody should ever "relish" in a critical failure...but it's sometimes deserved.

If your show is in trouble, be sure to get Beth Leavel in your cast. A Tony winner for "The Drowsy Chaperone," she was one of the bright lights of the abysmal "Elf" earlier this season, and now she is the best reason to see "Baby It's You!," the latest in a long line of jukebox musicals besetting Broadway. With subtle humor, expert timing, and knockout pipes, Leavel strives mightily to bring this mishmash of a rock tuner up to her level, but she can't perform miracles.
I haven't seen it. But I have read up on the production since I am a big fan of this era in music. I am aware that word of mouth hasn't been very good. I guess every production can't be a winner.
Baby It's You makes Good Vibrations look like Shakespeare. At least I smiled a few times during Good Vibrations (not to mention that the cast was pretty good).
And, I'll just say this once. I love Beth. A lot. I still laugh just thinking about her in DROWSY, and I think she possessed a fantastic voice. However, pop music just does not suit her vocally.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
I don't begrudge Leavel anything for taking this gig. It's technically a lead role and it keeps her working and visible to theatergoers. Plus there's no way she could be blamed even if the show was crap, which apparently it is.
She's an old school character actress who's frequently above her material. What she needs is someone to write her a part worthy of her talents. Imagine what kind of roles she would have gotten in the 50s.
Let's not throw out the BABY with the Beth Water...LOL
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
"And now we not only have a term for jukebox musical, but we have seen so many of them that, with rare exceptions, the label has become synonymous with lazy producing and less creativity.
To be fair on Baby its you most shows on Entertainment Weekly or whatever gave them the B- Have mostly bs and A so for there standards maybe that is low
Carlos Alberto.. you are not imagining things. Never underestimate the bitchiness of the true theatre lover.
The theatre vultures do relish in negative criticism. There is something very intrinsically bitchy about true theatre lovers (and I too have been guilty of this at times) but they are anticipating and relishing in the shaudenfraude known as the "pan."
And when they didn't get it as in the EW review.. boy were they disappointed.
I was at the opening tonight with four of my friends...the entire audience just seemed lackluster. There were a few missed line cues and one minor mishap with a minor stumble on stage. I am not surprised by the reviews so far.
Hope they are having fun at the party tonight...no newspapers allowed!
