Unimpressed. Unimpressed. Unimpressed.
I saw this live for the first time tonight, and it just didn’t stick with me.
Whereas some Broadway shows are so trashy they’re good, this one is quirky and offbeat (in true Burton fashion) to the point of exhaustion, for the most part. I had seen the movie before and about half of the plot didn’t make any sense to me. I am sorry to report that is still the case at the Marquis.
Alex Brightman would make a potent Deadpool for the stage. If anything, I thought he was more of a demon rascal tonight than when he was in School of Rock. Coke-snorting, potty-mouthing, intimidating, and he even made me laugh a bit despite me knowing all the jokes already (thanks, bootleggers). His little “Jason Derulo” at the end of the “Invisible” reprise left the house in stitches tonight. Deserved Tony nod - as well as the lighting.
Teeter is a serviceable Lydia and easily passes the low bar set by Caruso. Butler and Kritzer are sadly wasted.
I also have to shout out Sean McManus, who was on as a swing tonight. I LOVE his Patti impressions on TikTok. Nails the singing voice.
Everything else, meh. IMO the set was a bore (save for a few big pieces in the dinner scene) and only came to life because of all the drawings / projections.
The score is middling at best. It’s not the end-to-end embarrassment King Kong was from Perfect, there are at least a few decent tunes, if a bit generic on the pop-rock side. It’s almost impossible to believe Minchin inspired this guy. At least Minchin has a better sense of lyricism and wordplay.
I said a quick hi to Adam Laird before the show, he conducted tonight. Kris Kukul is in Boston at the moment working on Sing Street, and he’ll be back at the Marquis this weekend.
I noticed a couple of things line-wise:
”Schmucks” has become “morons” in BJ’s little monologue after “The Whole ‘Being Dead’ Thing.”
New opening remarks in WBDT: “Hey folks, ain’t it pretty? / Look who’s back in New York City! / Since your life’s been sorta sh*tty / Let’s start on - y’know - the whole ‘being dead’ thing!”
No Music Man slander tonight. “F*ck Brigadoon!”
Is the “I got herpes from Katherine Hepburn” punchline new? I don’t remember that line.
I find it astounding that both this and Be More Chill opened in the same season. And yet the kids go ape for both despite some harsh criticism for the two.
This wasn’t my show, but I hope to see Brightman on stage again in the future. What a talent he is.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It was actually from previews, but taken out before opening (changed to "And that's how I...'made nachos' with Katherine Hepburn). I'm surprised it came back.
And as someone who liked Sophia in the role, I hope I get the chance to see Elizabther Teeter for myself before the show closes. Most people tend to favor Caruso, but their reasons usually come out to sound like OBC idolization as opposed to her actually fitting the role better.

I am planning on going to the Sunday evening show on November 6th. At the moment pretty much all the side orchestra tickets are available for $110-135 with the box1 coupon code. At what row on the side is it getting too close and it becomes obstructed?
Should I just go ahead and get tickets for peace of mind or wait for rush/lottery the morning of?

Brightman is out of the show until further notice due to suffering a concussion on Saturday during the show. Will Blum has been on since then and will continue to through Wednesday currently.

Elliot Mattox is making his Beetlejuice debut tonight. Will will be playing the role on Friday and Sunday (they're dark on New Year's Eve).

Of course, this whole situation sucks, but I'm so happy for Elliot! He's a really sweet guy who has been with the show since D.C.! So glad he gets to have this experience before the show closes!

So sad to hear this about Brightman. His performance, in this otherwise meh musical, is terrific and it's a shame he may not be able to close this out. I hope, if he can't perform the last show, he pulls an Idina and walks onstage as himself at some point.

What would make it even better would be if he wore a green tracksuit! I would lose it!

Will is apparently having vocal issues and Elliot will be on as Beetlejuice for both shows today. Is Andrew Kober not longer with the show? He was a Beetlejuice standby
