Poor choice of words there, my friend.

This is such great news. Excited to see both of them! Getting my ticket ASAP!!!!!!
I wonder if Rudin is pissed Garber's husband tweeted the news, and robbed him of a grand reveal. Curious Garber wasn't announced with her.

Are you referring to "dark"? I don't know if this is your attempt at a joke or you think you're being clever, but either way it's...well, crass. I was simply referencing Jorge's earlier comment and using a technical theater term.

If you read the NYT article, garber was announced with her.

Bailey may have had previews, but she did not replace Channing. Channing was followed by Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye and Betty Grable before Bailey came in.

I know what you meant, it just read strange to me at first.

Thanks Jorge, found it. The initial announcements I read just had Bernadette. Looks like many of them have now added Garber.

Now that's a VERY funny mistake--talk about putting your foot in it [unintentionally I'm sure].
I guess I'm in the minority, but I'm gonna need to see Murphy before this all goes down.
The casting is great but I can't imagine that people will pay the ticket prices they paid for Midler. Her presence was an event.

True, but she's also not as expensive as Midler, so that should help even things out. Especially if Ms. Murphy departs as well.

I really do not think this is a good idea- they needed someone BIG to follow Midler- and Bernadette- though I love her- is not BIG box office. So this is a commercial let down, no doubt about it in my opinion. The show is really not strong enough - in 2017- to make it on the shoulders of a Broadway legend- it needs a star of iconic stature to keep the immense energy going. Perhaps a good artistic decision- and I say perhaps because I do not see it as an ideal fit- but as a commercial choice, I say- MEH.

But Bernadette's weekly salary is probably less than Bette's, so they'd be reducing their weekly nut and having enough of a marquee name to sell tickets. Hopefully the show will have recouped by then.

True- they will make their money back and Bernadette will do okay with a lesser scary- but maybe if they had a Jennifer Lawrence- Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, Dolly, Reba- a BIG name- maybe it could run another long time- with Bernadette- ti will run six months and then begin to peter out- my opinion- and that will be that. Well, to be honest- the show is not all that great, anyway- entertaining for sure- but silly and not all that heart- tugging, IMO- and without a leading lady who kills it- it will not bring big b.o.

They could replace it with Pizza In A Cup

Okay- Reba is a stretch- but she is a huge star- who would have thought Pearl Bailey was gonna be huge in this role- I happen to love Bernadette- have seen her in concert- and loved the show- saw original Into The Woods- and Sunday In The Park,too- and A Little Night Music- which I did not like- but, anyway, Bernadette will be fine- and Donna is fine too I imagine- but this will not run all that long- my prediction- unless they get a NAME.
Is Bernadette now brought it just to close shows? Don't get me wrong, I love her (saw her with Peter Allen in Las Vegas when I was very young) but she surely won't be the draw that Bette was/is. I was hoping for someone different, totally unexpected. I guess there's hope she will just be filler until a bigger name comes along.
The website already looks like they're getting ready for Bette to step aside. What a privilege it is for us to get to experience Bernadette Peters in yet another Broadway outing. I love that she has a no bull**** approach and is ready to take on 8 performances - much respect to the stamina of those with theatre in their blood.
Nobody including Rudin believes Peters will sell it like Midler. It's also ridiculous to assume that a huge star would even replace Bette in a production she is so associated with now. Bernadette is a great Broadway star replacement. I also think some of you are underestimating how she'll sell Dolly, it's not like we're talking about a cult Sondheim show. The combination of her name and Broadway status with an audience favorite like Hello, Dolly could do quite well at the box office.

I kind of feel bad for Donna Murphy. I know she knew what she was signing up for when she agreed to be Bette's Tuesday and vacation alternate, but seeing Bernadette Peters receive real star treatment and her own opening as a replacement compared to Donna, I can't help but feel a bit sad since they're not doing it for another diva super star but for another actress of similar pedigree. I do recognize that Peters may have more of a name outside theatre than Murphy though both have worked steadily outside of theatre. I wonder if Donna thought that if she sold enough tickets that she'd be named the replacement for Bette, but her ticket sales indicated otherwise which must be a bit of a blow even if business is still doing well on her days.

I am really surprised that an old pro like Rudin would replace a huge star like Bette Midler- in a show that depends on the charisma and excitement that Dolly requires in current times- with Bernadette Peters. To me, it shows that he is not looking for a Chicago-type run- and I am not sure why. The show could go on and on with female superstar performers- and I do not believe that there are not plenty of big Hollywood females of a certain age- ahem- who would not jump at the chance to play Dolly. Let's face it- the score is not all that demanding, it is very much an ensemble piece- and could be a springboard for a lot of renewed publicity and attention. If Carol Channing could sing this convincingly- and she did- why not Reese Witherspoon- Julia Roberts- even Madonna for three months- Gaga for three months- is Sarah Jessica Parker a big enough name?- if Barbra could do it at 27- why not Taylor Swift? Can Kim K sing? maybe she can- she certainly can create buzz- anyway, all of these possibilities lost with the lackluster, defeatist choice of a safe Broadway legend who simply does not sizzle to the max. Oh, well.
