Charlie even LOOKS like I imagine Barnaby should look. Super exciting.

I saw Charlie in Half a Sixpence in January and he's definitely full of appeal and charm. The character in Sixpence is similar to Barnaby so he'll fit in nicely.

So they can keep the American leads in the West End Mormon? (I don't know.)

And if your point is more around "quintessential American" character, note how many British characters are being played by American performers on Broadway. This argument is well over 30 years ago, and if this was good enough for Cameron Mackintosh, it should be good enough for us.
The question should be, how many British characters are played by Americans in London. Probably almost none.
I have seen countless Yanks play Brits in London. Easiest example the diessentinf poster might be familiar with were The American girls who opened Woman in White
Woman in White? You have to go back over 10 years.
Last year most of the leads, if not the entire cast of "View From the Bridge", "Crucible" and "Sunset Boulevard (except Glen Close) were British actors playing American Roles. Name me an entire cast of Americans playing British roles in London last year.
Anyone else sick of Hello Dolly already? Time to put it in mothballs for another 20 years.

LOL!

Best thing broadway has had in years, I am worried the mothballs will settle in with the upcoming cast but I am hoping for the best. But get there before Bette and Donna leave and you will fall in love with broadway!
I'm sure it is nothing, but this won't help the rumors of Patti's jealousy of Bernadette.
Patti wanted to replace in SUNDAY but Sondheim didn't like her voice for the score.
Patti was almost cast as the Witch in the original INTO THE WOODS but negotiations broke down and Bernadette ended up "getting everything I was denied."
Patti lobbied herself as a replacement Desire in the Nunn revival of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.
Patti was also heavily rumored for a new revival of HELLO DOLLY a few years ago.
All that to say I am ecstatic to see Bernadette finally play this role and be in a show again. As much as I love her, her concerts are as stale as they come. She performed the exact same concert down to the "house banter" 5 years ago and again this year. If anything maybe she'll put some Dolly into her act.

Guess this is might be a little off topic for this thread, but since you mentioned Patti...
I've always had the feeling Rudin is probably eying Patti to close the production. Everything just seems too similar to the original here. A musical theatre legend who was considered early on to play Dolly, has never been a replacement in a Broadway show, and claims she wants to retire and focus on film and TV and was. Sound a lot like the situation with Merman.
I don't know though, this is really all just wishful thinking I guess, but it'd be a much better way for her to end her Broadway career than War Paint and a really fun way to close out the show.

Patti wanted to originate the Trevor Nunn revival not replace. I also believe Patti was in talks to do Gypsy before Bernadette (but she did win in the end I guess).

Yes, but if Patti wants to do Dolly on Broadway, this seems to be her chance. They won't be reviving it again anytime soon.
I agree, I wasn't suggesting it meant she wouldn't replace - just correcting a story that has been misconceived here a couple of times. Patti called Trevor about originating Night Music and "didn't hear back". It's not as if she was fighting Bernadette for a replacement gig that she didn't get (well, maybe she was in addition - but we don't know that publicly). Although regardless this a role that better suits Bernadette's strengths than Patti's.

If I recall, Patti's NIGHT MUSIC request was about replacing CZJ after she saw/liked the production. (Personally, I don't think she's right for Desiree, though she could be the definitive Mme Armfeldt in ~5 years.)
Interesting that both she and Ebersole have played Desiree -- did anyone see Ebersole's concert version with Mary Louise Wilson and Ron Raines?
My apologies I realise it is rather vague about when the call took place. It very well could have been as a replacement to CZJ.
So Creel & Baldwin are staying with the show?

Looks like it. There's a rumor that their contracts extend through March, so take that with a grain of salt.
Was there word on how long Bernadette would be in Dolly? Or at least the range of dates that will be available in tomorrow's ticket block?

I think once we when the show is booking with Bernadette to tomorrow morning, we will have a better idea if Rudin is looking to do shorter stints(3-5 Months) with the Grand Dame Broadway Legends, which is what I hope. I would pay almost as much as I did to see Bette as I would to see Patti's take on Dolly, Bernadette, no so much.

I like La LuPone, but have zero interest in seeing her as Dolly. Zero.

Love her politics (Thank You, Patti!), but have sub-zero interest in LuPone's "Dolly". Midler is funny. Peters is funny. LuPone is, well, scary.
