He's trying to be Sam Smith and it's not working.
Did the concert film ever get released? Never saw anything about it."
It was released on Netflix! I actually really enjoyed it cause I loved his first album. His new album is just not for me though.

I can admit he's a talented singer / actor, but just cannot get no board with him so I have yet to listen to any of his stuff.
Watch him on Drag Race. Everything was about him. Not my cup of tea.

He was INSUFFERABLE on RuPaul’s Drag Race. He was so impossibly self-important.

I used to like him a lot fresh off of Dear Evan Hansen but everything he’s done in the last year has really rubbed me the wrong way. The DEH movie really killed his reputation for me and many other people.

Same. Felt he was a major talent after DEH. Now I have absolutely no interest in him.
Also I’m pretty sure you can downsize your venues based on sales. I’ve seen several Broadway folks who weren’t selling robustly at larger theatres so their were shifted to smaller ones. It’s happened with comedians too. Not sure why they didn’t downsize his tour.
How much you wanna bet Marc Platt is bankrolling this tour

Hey, if you've got Wicked money, why not?!
True. When you think about it, producers of longtime shows like Wicked get so much $$$ *each* week that they can reinvest that money for other shows/concerts that are hits/flops.

But the delay from album release to tour definitely hasn’t helped, and let’s be real, Ben Platt is very much a product of this fleeting and fickle sort of stan culture we have right now, when one minute you’re being idolised and the next you’re being torn down! - when he did his first tour Ben was still fairly fresh off the success of his Broadway DEH run and his first album, but now he’s in a post DEH movie world where it became almost a sport to ridicule him and the movie and all of stands for. I’m sure that had some effect on sales!"
You all just coming out with facts that are not so. His first tour was not the huge success you are making it out to be. But it was not a flop. I know for a fact that the stint at Radio City was heavily comped. A bunch of us went for free. And a wide variety of offers and discounts were available for that tour. Sure.. Netflix filmed it.. but I don't think that had to do with the tours popularity.
And this latest tour was not selling well before the pandemic. The cancelations and rescheduling did not help. But I remember when the original pre sales and on sale dates were happening.. and it was not good."
From what I remember, his first nyc concert for Sing to Me Instead was at the Beacon. That was sold out or it appeared to be.
midway through that tour he announced he was coming back to nyc to do a concert at Radio City music hall. Perhaps the people who went to the Beacon opted not to go to Radio City?
Back then the VIP meet greet was $300 which isn’t that bad. However due to the Netflix gig they moved the VIP events before the show and I know my friends were disappointed with the VIP meet/greet experience (everything felt rushed since it was done before the concert) plus Ben only answered 1-2 questions due to vocal rest before his show.
At MSG, it looks like VIP tix are $600 which is pricey in my opinion but hey if you’re a fan and can afford it, go for it! There is a back to school discount for MSG that is $30 I think.
I wish Ben the best. I really enjoyed going to his “Sing to me Instead” concert tour back in 2019.

Not that it matters, but also his opening act, Aly & AJ just did a big solo tour in the winter/spring of this year. As someone who is a fan of theirs, if I just saw them do a solo show on tour a few months ago, why would I want to see them again as an opening act where the tickets are way more expensive
I was curious after reading this thread & found pics from his Nashville show. Wow! Who styles him? It's like a weird 90's boy band look.
Instead of headlining he should be opening for Backstreet Boys.
Here's the site I found with pics, it looks like a Nashville radio station:

I was at Ben’s concert in Chicago last night and I agree with other sentiments that it felt like Ben wasn’t worthy of an Arena tour. He’s quite the talented fella, but the crowd was abysmal. Maybe Chicago is an outlier, but does he really think he can sell MSG? He couldn’t fill the 10,000 seat wintrust arena… Imagine is such a great song, I wish he hadn’t made it his encore.
Side note: I saw Michael Greif(who is in the city for the notebook musical) on the red line going back up north, I can only assume he was at the concert because his bag had a wrist band on it indicating it was good to go into the venue. I was too nervous to say hi and it was also a pretty rowdy train car, so I didn’t want to give off the wrong impression. Just thought it was cool to see someone of his stature on public transportation.
I've seen Sher get off the train at Lincoln Center. Everyone takes mass transit in the cities. It's just easier usually.
But glad you had a great time!
Yeah, it's no diss to his talent but MSG is MSG. Like he's playing the same venues as Elton John. Wild.

Marc Platt is one of main producers for Universal Studios and was once their President of Production - tbh I think if Wicked, while a money-maker for sure, is probably not where the majority of his income comes from? He also produced:
I find it interesting that he sang “Waving Through A Window” on the day DEH closed. He noted it would be the one and only time he’d sing it during a live show. So now he’s not performing any songs from the show that made him famous? Has he denounced the show now that he was ridiculed for the film?
I guess he’s a serious pop star now.

He has always refused to sing any DEH songs since he started releasing his own music, which is why it was such a big deal when he performed it at the late night shows to promote the movie.

A huge misstep IMO, and potentially a reason he can't fill even a modest house. People like him for DEH, not for his solo music. He hasn't earned that yet, and likely never will.
Even Idina who's done so-so with solo/original songs doesn't do a single concert without singing Defying Gravity (and For Good AND Let It Go).
Talk about biting the hand.
I agree, his music is average and people loved him in DEH. Adam Pascal resisted singing songs from Rent for years because he didn't want to be known for that. But, years later he realized that wasn't a bad thing and sings Rent all the time during his concerts, sometimes with Anthony Rapp. And Idina understands her audience and know that many people love Wicked.
Ben went from a Tony darling to a person who said "This movie would not have been MADE without me" last year. Like, dude. Talk about insufferable. Woof.
I don't care a whit about him or his music, and I don't know anything about the financing of his concerts, but I do know how performers feel when the shows they are in (especially in a starring role) are playing to half empty orchestras after everyone upstairs has been rerouted down and it is not a feeling I would wish on anyone. And if that's what daddy's money can buy you (and I reiterate, I have no idea) then I think most people would not want that "wealth."
There was a “campaign” by fans who insisted he play Fiyero in Wicked, so this week’s casting news probably hasn’t made that faction happy. Though I doubted he was under serious consideration.
Count me among the startled to learn that he eschews performing Evan’s material. Not rewarding people who first learned of his talents thus has the opposite impact: he seems to be punishing his audience for the film’s dismissal. It’s just bad show biz. By any yardstick of any era. A single number would hardly weight a concert set with too much origin story focus. He might study the concert careers of the greats - Minnelli and Streisand - and crossover phenomena - Menzel - all of whom serve the collective wish list of their fan base. Dare we say he’s receiving bad advice from handlers? Or perhaps the opposite: ignoring it.
I mean all the greats are going to give you their hits. Beyonce is going to give you "Single Ladies."
What you're known for is why people are there. Ignoring it is... not great.
Just wanted to add, during his Chicago concert he mentioned how Chicago was the city where he got his big professional theatre break, the Book of Mormon. He didn’t mention the name of the show, though. Seems like he wants to distance himself from his past stage material.
