She's already done the big, splashy, star-revival Broadway thing. Maybe she's looking for something different this time around. It also means the focus won't be entirely on her.

I can think of dozens of reasons not to work with him but is there some evidence that he is anti-feminist? (Except that he has been anti-human, and women are the largest component of humans in the Western world).

Unfortunately in this economy, anyone with money is hard to ignore. If only we had more millionaires that wanted to produce Broadway shows. At least Rudin usually produces female centered stories (as a gay man if I had his money, I would do the same)

I believe I asked if there was any evidence of his being anti-feminist (aka sexist). Calling out someone by simply using the word sexist (or racist) is not evidence of anything. What we do know is that he has long associations with lots of strong women including one of the strongest and most politically and industry active, Midler. Yes, he was abusive. But you have not established that he is sexist. If you have other facts, I am happy to learn about it, but not if it is just name-calling which can, you may not realize, be considered abusive itself.

I don't know about active sexism, but in all his productions in which he was lead producer, he only ever worked with one female director (Lila Neugebauer for Waverly Gallery) and never produced a play written by a woman. He acted as producer on several productions with female directors and writers, however- just not really ever on productions he developed himself.

I’m not prepared to call him a sexist but it is true that he worked most frequently with male directors and writers.
He was mean to everyone, but his treatment of Angelina Jolie, Megan Ellison, and Amy Pascal in the Sony hack emails felt particularly pointed. I don’t know that he’d refer to an equivalent male star as a “minimally talented spoiled brat” and a “camp act”.
Just noting that he worked with both Deborah Warner and Pam Mackinnon on Broadway, and multiple projects with Lila N including The Wolves. On the film side he produced films by Greta Gerwig, Amy Heckerling, Kelly Reichhardt, and Jodie Foster. And I’m sure there are more examples on the theatre and film side. The collabs were rare but they did exist.
I never saw SMS the first time so I look forward to seeing it.

I don’t really understand why Bess Wohl would even want/need to work with Rudin especially when you have Daryl Roth and Rachel Sussman on your side. What exactly does he provide that they don’t? Especially when you have Julia Roberts on board. He’s had many woeful productions, only seems to work with one director, he’s certainly not god, and Daryl and Rachel are superior to him. It’s bewildering to me.

They work together well. He just won another Tony award for Salesman last year - and Best revival of a play because of the incredible production. Why wouldn't Mantello be the first call...
